I suppose that I could shift Arbor Colossus , Scavenging Ooze , and maybe something new around. The three extra devotion would be nice...

I could play around with it and see how it works out.

Ok, I have some questions, because I'm seriously considering playing this deck at my LGS just for a change of pace and the chance to do some serious stompy stomp. I haven't played mono-green competitively. Would you please explein your sideboard selections and how you sideboard against the tier 1 archetypes?

  1. Why no Kalonian Hydra ? I would have thought this would be an auto-include. Over say Arbor Colossus or Scavenging Ooze (mainboard at least)
  2. Why no Bow of Nylea ? I would think the deathtouch would be useful.
  3. Into the Wilds versus Primeval Bounty ?
  4. No Mutavault ? I could see it if you ran Kalonian Hydra over Arbor Colossus .

Anyway, love the deck. What do you think?

All of those questions are fair. I'm working on putting this together myself for my LGS to see how it does in my local meta. I'll do my best to answer your questions in a clear way.

  1. Kalonian Hydra is a great card, but he doesn't really have a place in this deck. Yes, I run a lot of counters in this deck. Would he be good? Maybe, but with as stompy as the creatures can get, the doubling isn't usually needed. Plus, he isn't a big mana sink like the other cards are where I can sink big mana into making Polukranos, World Eater or Mistcutter Hydra just unbearably giant. Arbor Colossus is just good to swat fliers, he gets big fast, and adds big devotion.

  2. When using big stompy creatures, you don't really need the deathtouch. If you want to stop an aggro deck, sideboard in Wasteland Viper so that when ou make Polukranos big, he destroys any creature he fights. Plus, it would add a 3 to my mana curve, which wouldn't be a huge deal, but one of the big things I want to get rid of with Ratchet Bomb is those pesky three drop control cards like Detention Sphere and Banisher Priest . It's nit-picky, but it's something I took into consideration my local meta.

  3. Primeval Bounty and Into the Wilds are two quite different cards, so it's more of a personal preference. If you want more of the ramp, go with Wilds, and if you want the more bonuses, go with Bounty.

  4. I tested with Mutavault , but I don't really have those cards that boost it...it might be worth it, but don't run it over Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx .

Sorry if there are any mistakes in that, I typed it out on my phone.

What about splashing a little blue for Prophet of Kruphix ?

or (even better)

Splashing a little red for 2x Clan Defiance ? That seems right at home in this deck.

Either of those cards would be fine, but with Prophet of Kruphix , you don't really need flash because you aren't extremely worried about blocking. It's not really needed because you will usually throw down whatever for field presence, because this deck isn't really a big surprise deck. Clan Defiance , however, is certainly something I could get behind. It just means I also have to find 4 Stomping Ground s.

The idea behind Prophet of Kruphix is to flash in creatures at the end step so they can't be removed by a wraith or sorcery speed removal (which eludes me atm). That would only be the case if there are a lot of esper control decks at your LGS (for example).

But anyway Clan Defiance is potentially amazing in this deck. don't forget Temple of Abandon too.

Board wipes aren't a big deal at my LGS, so I'm not worried with the Prophet. If I'm going to run dual lands, I'll probably want to keep it to shock lands because they are more useful in aggro. I could run both, but I'll stick to shocks for now.

You might not even need to splash and add Stomping Ground . In my own mono-green devotion deck, I only have Forests and Nykthos as the mana base, relying on my any color of mana dorks to produce the red. Works out 95% of the time and doesn't add another $40 to the deck. With BTE and the Caryatid producing red mana for you, you might not need the extra lands.

Thanks for pointing that out! Sometimes I forget Caryatid goes for any color. That will save me quite a bit of money. Clan Defiance is still more likely to be in the sideboard than anywhere for now.

Thanks JTetris11. I'm trying to build this deck, but I am deprived of money and have like nothing I need so far. Too bad I can't just get donations.

I know the feeling haha! currently I'm building a dragon midrangy rampish deck (Dragon Fire (Competitive deck- feedback please!) and I need three Domri Rade & two more Stormbreath Dragon to finish it haha. But I love the build man! Its so mean. Question though what is your answer to board wipes and such?

November 13, 2013 2:36 p.m.

golffore297 says... #13

Honestly, I don't have a really good answer because green doesn't have many things to stop it. The best I can do at this point is have Garruk, Caller of Beasts and be able to draw more creatures out of my deck. Worldspine Wurm also puts out the tokens and shuffles in when he dies, but other than that not much.

You could throw in like 2 or 3 Overgrown Tomb and then run 2 or 3 copies of Golgari Charm . Between the shocks and the Sylvan Caryatid you could probly cast it pretty consistently.

Golgari Charm , Rootborn Defenses , Ready / Willing , are your options to avoid wraths. Boros Charm is too out of color to be relevant. Another option would be to sideboard Codex Shredder it allows you to pull a... wait the Worldspine Wurm gets shuffled back into the library, not sure whether that works.

I like the idea of Golgari Charm , you run Overgrown Tomb and put Whip of Erebos in the sideboard too. But I'm not sure you can use the whip on Worldspine Wurm before it triggers. The graveyard recursion with the whip and the lifegain might be sick for this deck. It would let you outrace just about everything.

November 13, 2013 3:29 p.m.

Apoptosis says... #16

ahh... Whip: "activate as a sorcery" definitely a no go for the wurm. Too bad that would be epic. Anyway... Golgari Charm would work nicely.

November 13, 2013 3:31 p.m.

JTetris11 says... #17

Whip of Erebos wouldn't work on Worldspine Wurm , and the double black would be tough. Scavenging Ooze is still your best option when it comes to the graveyard.

Golgari Charm is probably a good choice. It would probably be better than Ranger's Guile . Thanks for the suggestion, I only have one guy at my LGS that plays plenty of board wipes, which I though about, but wasnt extremely worried for. The good thing is I already have 2 Overgrown Tomb s.

November 13, 2013 3:41 p.m.

JTetris11 says... #19

Wow only one?!? Where do you play?? At mine there is about a third of the players playing some kind of azorius or esper control decks with Supreme Verdict with the other third playing g/w aggro, leaving about 15 other decks to play ;)

I live in a small town. The top guy at my LGS won states and most people run Jund or Naya.

JTetris11 you're right about the double black being tough. I was thinking more about the lifegain that the whip provides.

Love the addition of Clan Defiance , but I would put it mainboard over the 2x Scavenging Ooze (move to side) and I would bite the bullet and get the Stomping Ground , you'll use them for a long time and they will hold value.

JTetris11 says... #22

Gotchya! Jund is still a thing? ;) JK! I love the build though man! Good luck with it!

4x Golgari Charm in the sideboard would help a lot with the wraths, both Anger of the Gods from mono-red devotion and esper/azorius, both of which will use wrath to attack your manabase. Ranger's Guile and Bramblecrush /Ratchet Bomb are the obvious cuts to me. Maybe get rid of Scavenging Ooze all together. That way you have Golgari Charm for wrath and Bramblecrush for Detention Sphere , that plus the 2x additional M hydras sets you up well.

I just pumped up two Worldspine Wurm 's for 17 a piece on turn 6. Also, have a 15/15 Mistcutter Hydra on the field. I like how silly this is.

I love it as well, eventually you have more mana than you truly know what to do with. The long road to build this has begun and I'm going to try to get to a point were I have enough of the cards I need that I can begin to use it. The hardest cards to get will be the Garruk's, Wurms, and Polukranos's. Possible the Nylea's. And Caryatid's. But hopefully I will get there soon. Sadly, I traded my 2 Nykthos's away because I never thought I'd use it. I regret that oh so much.
