Agent of the Fates is a good way to lock down the battlefield, keeping it clear for you to steamroll them again and again. Even better with Hidden Strings , you just target your own Agent (or two, if you've got multiple on the battlefield, as I always do)... cipher it onto one of the Agents, swing, then cast a copy, forcing two more creatures to be sacced.

Siren of the Silent Song is a good option, since it's a discard AND a slight mill effect (though you care about the discard more here), and provides another self-target for the Hidden Strings .

If you go black/blue devotion, Nightveil Specter s are really useful, but grind right up against your budget limit. Likewise for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ... but if you get playsets of both, do not hesitate to put a full set of Mind Grind s in there, because, assuming a stabe curve...

T1: Swamp or IslandT2: Nykthos... cast, say, Incursion Specialist T3: Swamp or Island... Deathcult Rogue T4: Another Swamp or Island, Nightveil Specter T5: Another Swamp or Island... Mind Grind for eight lands.T6: Another Swamp or Island... Mind Grind for 12 lands.

Hi Minelia5, for Dimir colours you have Far / Away , which is actually a potent spell :)

I think Reap Intellect is far too expensive, if you're paying 5 mana, you might as well play Traumatize right? :)

You would also want some walls early game, so you can have Omenspeaker , mainly for the scrying so you don't miss land drops, and you can also dig for your important cards during the game but then you get a 3 toughness on the field, which stops a lot of white, and a lot of red.

I would also consider AEtherize or Cyclonic Rift instead of Curse of the Swine because of the instant speed.

Essence Scatter and Syncopate are good counter cards along with your Psychic Strike , the two cheaper ones can help against your aggro match ups.

I like Sage's Row Denizen , I also like Clone and Fated Infatuation with it :)

Last but not least, a big butt and a big mill with Phenax, God of Deception is Wall of Frost .

Dodgendive, I do think you are right about not running 3 Reap Intellect , but i think I will only drop one for a Traumatize , because sometimes they are useful. I also like your other suggestions, but I am having trouble deciding what to replace for them. Lastly, I like phenax a lot, but I feel like so far the defender decks with him in it don't seem very fun, and I wanted to try something different.

Psychic Spiral is strictly better sideboard option against other mill decks.

Also, Notion Thief and Whispering Madness is basically an instant-win combo. You opponent and your opponent discard your hands, you draw 7, then notion thief triggers preventing your opponent from drawing any cards and you draw 7 more.

I also think you should focus your creatures more, it will make the deck more consistent if you run multiple copies of certain cards rather than a bunch of one-ofs. Personally I'd go with 4Wall of Frost , 4Duskmantle Guildmage , 3Balustrade Spy , 2Consuming Aberration , and 1Phenax, God of Deception . That will still let you mill well, but it also will be defensive enough to help you survive until the late-game when your big bombs can come down.

nashbridges52, I agree with you about Notion Thief , but I think he is a better card in my sideboard against control decks Sphinx's Revelation , because I have other four drops that I like more in general. Also, I definitely like Psychic Spiral more than Elixir of Immortality , and just put it in my sideboard.

Traumatize , in my opinion, isn't really that great of a card. Sure it mills them for half of their library, but that means that it's losing value every turn. More importantly, it's losing value every time you cast a mill spell. Assuming you get all of your land drops and have an opportunity to play Traumatize turn 5 (which means you'll be completely tapping out for the turn to play one spell, which is something I never like doing that late in the game with UB) then you have to think about how many cards they're gonna have left. They'll have drawn 7 (no mulligans) plus 4 or 5 depending on who went first. We'll call that 11 cards just to low ball it. Then lets say you play a turn two Incursion Specialist , followed up by a turn three Duress and Paranoid Delusions ciphered onto the Incursion Specialist . You swing unblockable and mill them for 6 turn 3. Turn 4 you drop a Whispering Madness ciphered, and swing again on average the Whispering Madness will probably mill 4 cards, which means 8 because it happened twice, and 11 because of the Paranoid Delusions . That's 28 cards milled on turn 4. You drop the Traumatize turn 5 which means that in an average 60 card deck will have 32 cards left. That's 5 mana payed to mill 16 cards, which is the same as casting Breaking twice for one less mana.

I admit this is a rather perfect situation, but more than likely you won't have a Traumatize by turn 5, and if you do, you're gonna find yourself in a situation where you need something else to survive. It's been my experience playing against mill decks that they always seem to draw a Traumatize when they don't need it, or when it does minimal damage for the cost.

I just got a Jace, Architect of Thought in a duel deck. Should I/can I use him legally in this deck for standard?

TheVitamin says... #15

Yes, you can legally use any version of a card currently printed in a standard set. Jace, Architect of Thought is in Return to Ravnica so using the reprint from the Duel Deck is fine.

I suggest "Sword of Mind and Body" It makes your opponent mill 10 cards if you attack them directly. It's fairly cheap and great for this type of deck.

I really like this card PhoenixElite, but sadly, it isn't standard. Thanks for the advice though!

It is sort of random BookBurner, although it plays well. If you prefer more consistent decks, maybe you should check out my two decks Mr. Sunbond (comments and +1s wanted!), or Killer Goblins.

DodgeNDive TheNinjaJesus nashbridges52, I was wondering if you could give me any advice on my new version of the deck. You guys gave me so much help on my old copy, I was really happy. If you could do it again, it would be really awesome!
Thanks in advance,
