@Drfrozenfire Here ya go! I decided to refuse to add another Breaking / Entering to keep 1x Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver too good of a card to not use and will do loads more than Breaking for 1 more CMC

It's not standard, but I need some help or opinions on my u/b mill deck Arkham. Any help would be appreciated. Everybody should have at least one decent "mill" deck

@ Quadsimotto Results are in! I managed to pull a 2nd place finish at FNM! The deck played flawlessly (sorta, ill explain in the huge text that is coming)

So today really tested this deck, I have spent a few nights prior getting some practice plays in with friends and getting the deck down to be as efficient at doing what it does as fast as possible. I am very proud of this deck and its win cons, they both shined and worked separately when I needed them to. Consuming Aberration got beefy too fast before removal could get through. Psychic Strike and other counter spells did all the magic for keeping him on the board. Thassa, God of the Sea also provided the unblockable that the Aberration lusted for.

I will note that there were 22 people at my event, im not sure if that is a typical number for FNM or if it is considered low, but all in all 1st place was a heavy aggro deck Domri Rade was the death of me.. Even though I won first round from Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver doing her dirty work and playing fatties from exile pile, and getting all the removal and counter I needed, the next 2 rounds were horrible.

Let me stress this, I did NOT, repeat did NOT have Omenspeaker in the deck for better draw setups, I simply didn't get them in time and still wanted to have the show on the road so to say. Duskmantle Guildmage was put back into the deck in her place and though he did win me a few games with his ability + Jace, Memory Adept it never happened against the G/R aggro deck... I kept dead drawing land when they weren't needed which is such a shame, Omenspeaker could have cleared that up in a jiffy.

All in all im super happy about my first experience with FNM and it was alot of fun, yes I did get some booster packs, which I pulled 1x Thoughtseize as well as 2x Omenspeaker (shame I didn't have this prior to the final match) but next time should go alot smoother.

So I think Dimir definitely has a good place in standard at the moment and seems to work well. There was 2 other Dimir decks but went more control and less mill/creature which ultimately I just out swarmed them and won via dmg or just had answers to whatever they played, I felt like the deck had a great balance of creature to other spells. Next time I will be ready with Omenspeaker and I will hope to claim 1st sooner or later!

Lastly, I wanted to thank each and every one of you that guided me and those of you who helped me craft this deck, I owe you guys a huge thank you! The experience was amazing and I will be anxious to get back at it next week!

That is fantastic news! Just out of curiosity what did you use in replacement for the Omenspeaker ? Def glad to hear that mill did that well in a group of twenty plus.

You should have read the entire wall of text haha.

I used Duskmantle Guildmage instead of Omenspeaker he did manage to win a few games with his broken ability + Jace, Memory Adept 0 ability. However, he didn't provide the scry that was much needed nor the 3 toughness Omenspeaker gives. Ultimately I lost due to dead draws, I had some other hiccups along the way but figured most of the kinks out when it mattered.

I am glad to say that I successfully milled 4-5 decks completely. Was a great feeling, back when I started in M13 I played with a what I call "MTG Veteran" and he ran a discard deck, so it was semi mill playstyle and I loved the idea, so im glad that mill is currently in such a good place at the moment as it is the style I prefer.

Congrats on 2nd place! My FNM store on average has 28-32 players so I think you had a decent pool of players to test upon. Anyways as Dimir is my fav guild and I run a similar strategy wanted to say well done on the hard work of making a kick ass deck.

DDrew56936 Thanks so much! Dimir is my favorite too, hopefully next week will be better since ill have 100% of the cards on the list. I still look back an regret not having Omenspeaker when I really needed it in the final match... Im still thinking about Thoughtseize and Read the Bones they do seem like they would do great in this deck but im not certain since I didn't exactly need them at FNM, however, Read the Bones would have helped alot as well in the last match.

It's good to hear that Dimir has made strides at FNM! I've been running Dimir Control/Mill since I started playing magic last winter. I do think the rotation helped Dimir. I think with Snapcaster Mage out of the set and Golgari being a little weak right now, its a great time for mill/control.

My deck (Mystic Death) went 2-2 in the last FNM in a ~40 person pool. Lost to a Selysnya deck (Voice of Resurgence is a total bummer) and an Esper Control deck with zero creatures. Beat a mono-white weenie deck and a WBR deck easily though. I'm still working on upgrading it, post-rotation (I have a strict $20 an week policy on buying cards). I will say this: Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver is an awesome card. He/she was totally a difference maker when I played the girl with the Esper deck.

So a few thoughts on your deck:

  1. I'd run 3xAshiok, Nightmare Weaver because he/she is so great.
  2. Because of this, I would side board Hover Barrier and bring it out against decks running Stormbreath Dragon .
  3. Minor note but you have 3xHero's Downfall in your Main and 2x or your Side, which, unless you mean to cheat, isn't kosher.

Anyways, great looking deck! +1 on your success. More power to Dimir Mill/Control!

Vindemiatrixx says... #11

@ CrazyPete Yeah I decided to put in Hero's Downfall and forgot to take it off the sideboard, will fix that now! lol. And I do love Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver he/she is amazing, the only reason I don't have more copies is due to the 27$ price tag, I did buy a single Theros booster and managed to magically pull him/her, so she went straight in. The times I have gotten to play her were game changing. She is such a great card, ive been told she is a bad choice for my Consuming Aberration but people don't realize that I use him mostly as a mill engine not a swinger. However, this deck isn't a one trick pony and can dish out damage if it is needed, I won't pass a win by dmg to try to mill, I go with either or and so far its been working quite well! As soon as I get more copies she will def have more slots. Thanks for the +1 and glad you liked it! Dimir is also my favorite

No Traumatize ?

October 7, 2013 1:28 a.m.

Vindemiatrixx says... #13

Nope, here is why. By T5. my typical mill side of things would have milled about 20 cards to 30 cards, a standard deck is 60 cards. Traumatize would only mill about 15-20 cards by that time, less if it took me 5 turns to get the mana as well as draw it, this leads me to believe that on text it looks good, but in playtesting it just goes bad. On T5 id much rather toss out a Jace, Memory Adept and mill 10 every single turn, or a Consuming Aberration and all my spells afterward mill until I hit a land. Im not saying its a bad card by any means, I think its just not what people put it out to be. All in all its CMC is way too high especially considering by T5 its worth a lot less I could get the same effect from 3x Tome Scour and only use up 3 mana, or 2x Breaking / Entering for 4 CMC. Play all of them and its 1 more CMC total but alot more cards in the grave, and those are playable on T2, leaving room for a T5 Jace to hit for a more devastating total of milled cards. The last thing I don't like about it is spending 5 mana at sorcery speed, which allows me to play absolutely no counter spell or removal on opponents turn, which to me is bad news.

Yes it is a decent card on T5, I admit, but id rather play other things that far into the game. Plus the deck isn't just a flat out mill you deck anymore like it used to be, its more on the removal and damage side of things with the added bonus of easily milling opponents out. I actually need a new deck name now that I think about it. Jace, Memory Adept can mill someone out by himself so protecting him is the main goal within the deck with fat flyers such as Desecration Demon and walls. If all else fails Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver will be putting creatures on the board and Consuming Aberration will be doing his dirty work as the game progresses.

Fair enough. I didnt play test i just saw it said mill and assumed traumatize. You really seem to have a good handle on a good deck. You have solid control powerful creatures multiple win cons and a well rounded deck. Hats off to you mate +1

Vindemiatrixx says... #15

Thank you so much! I highly appreciate it, it means a lot to me. Its been quite the ride! It actually used to be just mill when it first started, then a lot of the community on here made suggestions and after a while it became what it is today! There still is room for improvement, but trying to figure out where and what cards should come out. Ultimately the deck was built by several people in a way! So my hat is off to everyone else! I can't stress that enough!

I have gotten a little of that community help on a couple decks im brewing currently but i cant quite get anything to turn out a winner. It is hard to build a tier1 deck in standard that isnt a near identical copy of something else already out there. I hope to place top 3 fnm with one of my new deck ideas. I think i need to use more control im so used to my weekly kitchen table games i rarely build control aspects into my decks and instead build tribal or combo decks that dont really stand a chance in compitition standard.

I commented on a deck of yours which I suggested alot of things, Boros is really good I feel as of standard format right now, I have played many good ones! I would be more than happy to help you shape that one and give you advice ect ect.

Lol look at a full figure art Ashiok HAS to be a dude! Almost has a goatee flatter than an ironing board and has feet second in size only to Polis Crusher lol

@ Esperret wow just looked at Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver full art and yeah I totally agree, super flat chested, HUGE feet, I am going to say that it is absolutely a guy.. but accidentally shopped at Forever 21 or some other girl store. Maybe he was confused.

Okay i Know i offered up Dark Betrayal originally but maybe instead (to give you a wider range and still hit black) try Ultimate Price for sideboard. Also minus one incursion for one more needle to deal with AEtherling as he is such a pain in the ass plus you can use it to shut down plainswalkers that may be irritating you like Domri Rade As for Thoughtseize being that you could use it turn one to take away win cons i would swap one for one on both Far and away And Hero's Downfall You would still have two of each and a way to take out other more difficult cards to deal with early game. That is all players preference though. I would play test with it like that and if it doesnt have that feel then change back to what you had. you know the saying "if its not broke"

October 8, 2013 12:23 a.m.

Vindemiatrixx says... #23

I def could try that out! The only thing im worried about is that Thoughtseize may end up killing myself in the long run since im also running Watery Grave if I am in a desperate need for the U/B it provides ill def be losing 2 life, but I will give it a shot anywho! Trying to perfect the deck before next FNM! I want to get 1st!!

As far as Ultimate Price im not sure if the swap in the sideboard would be worth it considering ive seen alot of multi color creatures out there which Dark Betrayal would still hit for 1 mana less. There are some open slots on the sideboard overall though, so another copy of Pithing Needle could easily fit!

If you are wondering or anyone else for that matter, yes the deck did get a name change as well as the "featured card" since I thought the name was more clever than "mill monstrosity" which seemed misleading considering the "monstrosity" effect of monsters nowadays! Plus the new "featured card" really complements the name! WIN-WIN

MILL ALL THE THINGS!.

But anywho Thoughtseize is really just a sideboard piece to pick out your opponent game 2 and 3.

Other than that a very solid deck. =)

Haha thanks! It is such a good card, but such an iffy choice for the deck in my personal opinion! Thanks for checking it out! I appreciate it! My OCD tells me I need 20 upvotes now
