Well I have been using this deck. Card for card. Updating as you do, and I like where its at right now. The only difference is that I am using 2 Desecration Demon and I could not find any Liliana's Reaver so I substituted for 4 Black Cat I find it gives me something to throw onto the field quickly that makes my opponent think about attacking.

Overall I have had a lot of fun with this deck, I won't be adding the Master of the feast, just because I don't like the idea of giving any cards. Even if that does give us a chance of bonus per say. Give those Black Cat a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised

Looking forward to more!

In additition,

I really hope they add another card with a rack type effect when Shrieking Affliction rotates out. It will really hurt me if it doesn't, I only play discard decks basically

I really agree with adding red - Rakdos's Return and Sire of Insanity have stupid synergy with Waste Not (AFAIK you get a trigger for every single card), and they help you instantly get Shrieking. I also have Drainpipe Vermin over the Reavers to get the hands dwindling quicker, and I don't feel I need a 4/3 to stop out the game.

Cableguy613 I wasn't high on Master of the Feast either, thinking why would I want my opponent to draw cards? But the simple matter is, at some point in the game, your opponent is going to have no cards in hand and will play whatever card they're topdecking and you're going to be stuck with a bunch of dead discard cards in your hand. Master of the Feast pretty much makes sure they'll have a card in hand on YOUR turn, allowing you to use those discard cards. It works beautifully. I know have 3 in my deck.

btw, i take it you don't own any Mutavault s? I broke down and bought two just because they can be a game changer in this kind of build. Food for thought, although they do rotate out soon.

that being said, I will see if my local shop has some and give Master of the Feast a go.

caribou6425, what is your take on Indulgent Tormentor ? He seems like he could be good as a means to usually continuously draw an extra card each turn. Plus he's a 5/3 flier. Yes, a simple Lightning Strike can kill him but by turn 5, our opponent shouldn't have many or any cards in hand so it could be good. What are your thoughts?

rochdalekilla9... I have been tempted by Indulgent Tormentor and I agree with your argument. And the hope is that this deck would have paralyzed the opponent so that any creature I have on the board wouldn't have to worry. I think Indulgent Tormentor would be a good replacement for Desecration Demon once rotation happens in the fall. I am gonna test it out

+1!
My friends all hate me now, as my version (we all play "casual" and sometimes multiplayer) contains 4 Dark Ritual 4 Hypnotic Specter 2 Syphon Mind and 3 Nezumi Shortfang

Dr4c0...glad it's working for you! I can see that this deck has even more potential in casual, modern and beyond. There are so many great cards out there. One day soon I will venture down that road, for now I am happy to stick with standard until I get more proficient with the game and all its intricacies.

love discard decks. played one for awhile in STD to great success Discarded & Destroyed (Consistent TOP8's @ FNM)

one thing i'll say you need is Pack Rat not only is it one of the best cards in Standard, but it also is great at pitching your unneeded discard spells mid/late game. +1 from me.

sharkudi...if I had any Mutavault I would certainly consider using Pack Rat . They are both great cards!

I am attempting to prepare this deck for when rotation comes out. As I am still relatively new to Magic, maybe what I am about to say is incorrect. I am a bit concerned for when Khan's comes out in the fall. From the spoilers I have seen so far, they are all 'wedge' format. Which will throw a wrench into my plans to use mono-black. Will there be any mono coloured cards in Khan's, or is it solely going to be 3 colour combos?

I would try and add Disciple of Phenax . It's a great card to push your opponent over the edge and dump their hand. Especially since it gives you at least a mind rot.

August 7, 2014 7:47 a.m.

Dubel what do you mean it gives you at least a Mind Rot ? For my deck, I purposefully left Disciple of Phenax out because he only snags one card from their hand. When I first started reading what he did I was excited, thinking the devotion would take away that many cards or at least more than one. But for 4CMC for a 1/3 that only has them discard a single card, I don't think he's that good. I'd rather drop a Desecration Demon or a Liliana's Reaver on my fourth turn than a Disciple of Phenax . Just my thoughts.

Considering this deck doesn't have access to the array of cards that a modern rack style deck has, (which are generally effecient enough to need little other than discard effects) I would like to suggest using rattlesnakes for your early game. Some examples of these would be Pharika's Chosen and Typhoid Rats . Doing this will give you early game and late game advantage by providing you with extra time while you get your engines going (like Waste Not )

teamawesome1...when I first started thinking about building a discard deck, I wanted to include either Pharika's Chosen or Typhoid Rats . I love deathtouch. It always scares me when I come across it and I am sure most players feel the same way. I am not sure what to take out for the 'rattlesnakes' though. Because having them in there would be fun and also reduce my CMC, which is essential for a discard deck to function.

Have you considered switching out a swamp or two for Urborg, tomb of yawgmoth just for consistency with the radiant fountains?

August 10, 2014 9:02 p.m.

teamawesome1 says... #19

It seems as though your finisher creatures (Liliana's Reaver , Desecration Demon , Master of the Feast ) could be dropped from 9 to a lower number, seeing as your draw power is pretty good you shouldn't have trouble finding them. Perhaps choose 7? Other than that your sideboard seems so equipped to deal with creatures that you could probably drop removal to like 3x or 4x Hero's Downfall . Also, this is just speculation, but since you already are having your bomb creatures fill your late game you may want to drop the Liliana Vess 's if you find them being too slow

Hope that helped! Or at least gave you some food for thought

daveandkenz...you are absolutely right. Change has been made! I even have a Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth foil I was lucky enough to get in a booster. Been wanting to flash that sucker on someone. Tks!

caribou6425 says... #21

teamawesome1...I cut a Desecration Demon and a Master of the Feast . in their place I added 2 Typhoid Rats . I feel better now that I have a bit more balance creature wise. As for Liliana Vess she can be a problem, but I want to give her a chance. If she is too slow, I will put her on the bench and throw in some other discard that I have in my SB. I am anxious to try the deck at FNM, but can't go for another 2 weeks.

August 10, 2014 10:49 p.m.

I still don't think you need two Liliana Vess s. I use one in my deck and I generally sideboard her out in the second game. Yes she acts as sort of Diabolic Tutor but she is slow and by the time I get her out, unless I have a Master of the Feast out there, her +1 becomes dead. I've been thinking about taking her out altogether. Also, you need some Lifebane Zombie s in your sideboard. Yes, it exiles instead of discards but it's hand disruption and has intimidate. The dude is a beast.

Shrieking Affliction is good but it requires alot of continuous discard. Maybe Black Cat instead? or 3 Black Cat and 1 Shreiking Affliction

August 12, 2014 9:51 p.m.

Krysis-Krow ---- Shrieking Affliction is one of the centerpieces of this deck until rotation happens. The point of this deck is for your opponent to have no hand, triggering Shrieking Affliction and having them only gain cards on your turn via Master of the Feast . But this is a DISCARD deck, so a lot of continuous discarding is supposed to happen.

But against the control match up, which there are alot of since RTR is in standard right now, they have alot of draw power. Itll be a dead card
