Kingtalk: I was thinking about Underworld Dreams. How well does it work for you? Is there an opposite of Wheel of Torture, like how there's 2 racks?
I can't wait to really grind this in some games and see how well it turns out. The sadistic side appears. Who knows, might even move further down the path of darkness and add stax.

DraGonSpell: Unless I had a way to keep them off the entire draw, it could very easily work against me. I would to couple it with a whenever you draw a card, discard a card though!

DraGonSpell: I tried out that card in a couple pods and that actually worked out fantastically! Thank you!

Goronagar: I've tried this card in the deck a few times, but after some consultation with my meta, we've all determined that while the madness cost to bring back something we pitched for free is great, we really don't want to be pitching things we'll want back later, due to a ton of graveyard hate that exists. Also, when I had it in my hand in previous games, it just didn't really net me much value. Usually a 2nd turn around flipped lili will bring me back most of what is in the graveyard, and right into play.

So, I just picked up Geth, Lord of the Vault, but am unsure if it will fit in this deck, or where it would fit in, if it does.
I think the card itself is great, and since we're filling our opponents yards with stuff, why not just take it for ourselves.

How did you still have Dark Depths in play during game 2 of the 50 man EDH tourney, when you say you copied it with Thespian's Stage? That combo involves both being sacrificed, the original Dark Depths first via legendary rule, and the copied one due to having no counters on it to then make Marit Lage.

Ginger05: OMG, wow, you're totally right. That was a huge misplay on my part. I just re-read up the Legendary Rule 704.5j and now realize that it's a state based action. Well shoot. I should not have won that game then.

Unsure if just that one game you had mana trouble but I'd recommend putting in Burnished Hart and Myriad Landscape. maybe over charcoal diamond? Its more expensive, but you can recur it. And ime lands are safer mana production than anything else.
Nirkana Revenant would also work as a beater and mana-doubler?
love this deck, my Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker deck is close to this in playstyle.
October 23, 2018 3:51 p.m.
dizzierabit I've considered Nirkana Revenant but she's 2 more mana than Crypt Ghast. The point of the deck is more focused around discard effects, to keep your opponents off of cards they want, and let the enchantments do their work. With Wound Reflection and playing Quest for the Nihil Stone mid-late game, we're dealing 10 damage to that player during their turn.
As for Burnished Hart, it's been tried before I posted the deck, but 5 mana to recur and sac it for a basic really takes a lot out of the turns play. I've been contemplating keeping Phyrexian Reclamation in the deck, but since we are running some lords for blocks, it's there to allow Gravecrawler to recur. I do agree that Charcoal Diamond has a bad drawback, but it's a great early game ramp and mid-late game discard option.
The option of Myriad Landscape is a viable option and I may cut a Swamp to put that in. I may also add Wasteland. The other destroy lands are great, but I like to keep some mana untapped for instants.
Another card I've been toying with trying is Dash Hopes. I know in EDH 5 life isn't that big of a deal, but when you have your opponents low on cards, I think it might be a great option. The biggest drawback of the deck is enchantment removal, and frankly black just lacks this.

Thats fair, Burnished Hart is a pet card of mine. my meta is artifact removal heavy so i usually leans towards lands over artifact ramp. Surveyor's Scope is another option in that Charcoal Diamond spot. Just options. I've not found it hard to proc, basically if i need it because im behind it works. if not its discard fodder.
Wasteland is good, so is Field of Ruin. does allow your opponents to ramp as well but if you're keeping them off cards it may be worth that drawback.
I like Dash Hopes, but if you're just looking for removal i lean towards Scour from Existence. overcosted obviously, but better removal than dash considering folx will pay the life if able, particularly if you're causing discard. I'd pay just to spite you. Withering Boon is another option, but not as good, and does nothing against enchantments.
nirkana makes sense, unsure if you need the help closing out games or not. i prefer ghast as well with the extort but its an option.
October 25, 2018 11:53 a.m.
Surveyor's Scope in place of Charcoal Diamond is a good replacement, especially since I usually play against 2 - 3 players. So 2 or 3 lands for a 2 drop is an even trade.
Wasteland will make it into the deck, Field of Ruin, I can see it's benefits, throw the opps off, especially if there was a Mystical Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, etc. I'll see where I can fit them in, what lands have been dead on board and deserve a spot.
I haven't put Dash Hopes in, and I doubt it'll actually find a real spot in the deck. There's just something I gotta do to protect my enchantments, and or be able to remove enchantments on the field.

I like what you have going here, although I would git rid of the zombie lords in favor of a few more crucial cards like Archfiend of Ifnir, Bone Miser, and maybe Ruthless Sniper. If you do want to go with a zombie theme, I would seriously consider making room for Cryptbreaker plus maybe some Lilianas - like Dreadhorde General and Death's Majesty.
April 12, 2020 10:02 p.m.
dbsharkeyjacoby: The reason for the zombie lords isn't for the zombie tribal theme, but the buff they offer. Death Baron gives us the ability for our zombies to have Deathtouch, so unless we're getting swung with flyers, our opponents will think twice about swinging towards us. Lord of the Undead gives us the ability to recur a vast majority of our creatures, which are zombies. Undead Warchief reduces the cost of our zombies. Out of the 20 creatures in the deck, 50% of them are zombies.
Due to these effects, you'll see why I'm not running Lord of the Accursed, all it does is give our zombie duders menace, which would require us to need to swing more. If our game gets to that point where we need to turn sideways, I'd rather use Liliana, Defiant Necromancer and/or Geth, Lord of the Vault to steal creatures, and any of our other beefy boys and swing with.
Cryptbreaker was in the deck originally, but was cut due to not having enough utility. You need to tap three zombies to draw a card? Okay, that's three creatures less we have to defend with, and defend our Lili's with. The discard outlet is fine, but unless Ensnaring Bridge is out, we don't wanna be dumping cards from OUR hand, we wanna be dumping cards from either everyones hand or our opponents hand.
Ruthless Sniper costs mana for it's give -1/-1, not really ideal. Bone Miser is a fine card, but it's very costly. Archfiend of Ifnir is a good card, and I'll consider it, if I find myself in games coming across a common dead card in hand, to swap it out with.
As for the Lili's, Liliana, Dreadhorde General has been considered, however her cmc is way higher and will destabilize the curve more, as well as she runs more in Zombie Tribal. The only value I feel I'd get out of her is killing my creatures to draw a card, which may work, but I fear it'll be way too situational. Liliana, Death's Majesty runs best in a more zombie tribal theme.
The biggest thing to keep in mind with some of these higher cost suggestions is that we are running mono-black. We don't have access to ramp outside artifact ramp, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.

I am sad to see the competitive level of this deck to drop, but it still plays out very well and holds it own against some level 8 - 9 decks.
July 23, 2020 11:53 p.m.
WolfWitcher518: Used to rank much higher in terms of competitiveness. Around 80-90%.

so you mean the competitive meter, which is what i was actually asking. don't pay attention to the competitive percentage. its impossible for a computer to calculate how good a deck is. i could make a deck of 60 differently named modern staples and no lands and it would still show 100% competitive even though the deck is literally unplayable.
July 24, 2020 12:55 p.m.
WolfWitcher518: Yes, exactly, which I didn't clearly state in my reply, apologies! Thank you, I obviously took that meter way too seriously.

Hey I'm running my own kind of Liliana/Discard/Reanimate deck. Wanted to see your thoughts on Mortuary Mire and Witch's Cottage Been thinking of play testing them since mid/late game they are an easy way to get a creature back on top of the deck. And then eventually draw and play again. Curious if you have seen those and decided for/against them?
August 11, 2020 7:31 p.m.
WhrThRdFrnGr0w5: Depends on your meta and what type of powerlevel you're trying to go for. Mortuary Mire is not a card we want in our hand mid/late game at a higher level, since it enters tapped. However, if you're short on some recursion cards, due to price or availability, it's a decent trade off for a land cantrip. Yet, for more tuned levels, we would want to make sure to capitalize all our cantrips to keep our opponents hands empty.
I have not experiemented with Witch's Cottage, and since I had a small step away from Magic during Eldraine, that is something I'd consider putting in, in place of a Swamp. Might actually look into whether I have one that I opened and forgot about, or my LGS has one foiled, since it's a common after all. Thanks for the reminder!

Looks fun, here's a mono-black discard deck I built, maybe there'll be some cards in there you'll consider. +1
