Welcome to my Commander deck featuring the definitely not inspired by Disney princess, Hylda of the Icy Crown.

Finally, the Azorius control commander I've always wanted! As soon as this was spoiled I knew I had to build it. I've tried a few iterations of control in the past but I never felt there was a commander that provided a real pay off. The closest I got was my Controlmium The Mutable deck but was only there for commander damage kills and evasion. Thankfully, Hylda has come to the rescue...

As you can guess, the premise behind this deck is tapping all our opponents creatures down and using Hylda's multiple options to reward us for doing so. I've tried to include a variety of repeatable tap effects like Sentinel of the Eternal Watch and Ojutai Exemplars alongside one time uses like Choking Tethers and Icy Blast. Hylda's Crown of Winter is an auto-include too. The absolute all-stars in this department are:

Court Street Denizen / Junk Winder / Opposition - Repeatable token generation, triggering Hylda. It's nuts! Elvish Mariner - Same as above, but for card advantage. Bond of Discipline - Can provide a huge life swing in our favour with just a few creatures, something valuable when playing the 'fun police' that is control. Illithid Harvester / Time of Ice - 'Removal' for tapped creatures.

As the name implies, the decks primary way to win is via a elemental army, using our tappers to clear the way for them. To help this out, we have Anointed Procession doubles our creatures and Intangible Virtue gives them all Vigilance, keeping up blockers also. Since Hylda's triggers are the heart of this deck, we have multiple ways to save her and our army in Rootborn Defenses, Flawless Maneuver and Martyr's Cause.

Since we are a control deck too, we additional ways to benefit this strategy. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria as a personal favourite planewalker providing us extra mana, Expropriate to top our curve as the big bad spell! Rhystic Study, especially early game, does a vast amount of work. Gadwick, the Wizened does double duty as card draw and a tapper, similar to Urza's Rebuff and You See a Guard Approach. We have a good amount of counterspells, but run less direct removal due to our ability to control creatures. Finally, we have a secondary wincon in Azor's Elocutors for an extra bit of fun if you can ever hold the fort long enough!

Overall, the deck mainly focuses on the token and card draw abilities and doesn't provide any synergy for +1 counters of her third ability (some proliferate action would also speed up the Elocutors!). This was to narrow down and not spread us too thin on combos and synergies. That doesn't mean it isn't a useful ability, once a good army has been made!

Thanks for checking out my Hylda of the Icy Crown deck. I'm delighted with how it's turned out and really make me feel rewarded for playing a control playstyle. Naturally, sometimes it's like playing archenemy so be prepared for the onslaught. If you like this deck, please feel free to check out my active decks below.
