When I saw The thirteenth doctor I wanted to make a looter tribal type deck and hopefully get counters on them to abuse their abilties as much as I can. I felt black was the best color to go for as an additional color with all the graveyard shenanigans it has so I choose Clara as the companion as she is the only one who lets me get black into the deck. Black also does have some cool synergy cards like emergent Ultimatum, Bolas's Citadel, Beseech the mirror. Hostage taker, Gonti and villainous wealth for casting cards outside of my hand.

Emery seemed like a good way to get casts from outside of my hand off especially paired with Vedalken Orrey to give my stuff flash so I can actually use the doctor untapping emery for more stuff.

A couple combos are Pili Palla + Experiment Kraj/Necrotic Ooze and Virdian Joiner/Incubation Druid/untapper with a land that taps for more than 1 mana/Sol Ring. You will have infinte mana and access to all tap abilties in the respective zone depending on which ooze you are comboing with. Experiment Kraj gives all your dudes infinte +1/+1 counters too. Also can work with a perment untapper in the Virdian joiner slot provided you are untapping a land that makes more than 1 mana. Which is why Nyxthos is in the deck despite not being a monocolored deck.
