Jace's -8 requires knowing your opponents decks really well to do anything with in EDH.

I've noticed that the tappedout-price of a deck doesn't count Mana Crypt at all... And that's like a $70-80 card, so...

@m12fox: I did, and my friend is currently running it in his own deck. I don't really think the single-use ramp is worth it. The upkeep ability is prohibitively expensive for a deck focused on control and ramp.

It gets better when Seedborn Muse in on the battlefield, but that's about it...

It's kind of a sleeper, but it might work pretty effectively in your deck: Have you given any though to Archaeomancer ?
Since you're running Cavern of Souls (Wizard), and you've got Riptide Laboratory / Deadeye Navigator , you could bounce this guy all day -- he would be uncounterable, and you'd be grabbing your spells back from the graveyard each time.

Eternal Witness is better and cheaper for that purpose. Were I not able to run EWit, then I would probably turn to Archaeomancer (which is usually one of the go-to cards for this kind of effect in Esper decks). Although it's true that Archaeomancer gets the benefit from Cavern of Souls , that's not really enough to warrant inclusion, especially since Archaeomancer costs precious blue mana that I would normally hold back for control magic.

On a related note the reason that popped into my head was you said "...precious blue mana..." and I'm playing LEGO LOTR on steam...
Also, classy Epoch.

I should get mine altered. I'm not sure which edition I'd prefer though. I also want to get my Top altered into a seasonal/weather scene or maybe a GURU Top.

What are everyone's thoughts on using Cephalid Coliseum ?
December 13, 2012 2:34 a.m.
I love Coliseum. Because it comes in untapped, rarely is it a dead draw. The one damage has yet to be relevant for me either.

My one concern is how often do you have the threshold? I've tested a few threshold cards and I've found that it can be quite difficult to actually have the 7 cards. Keep in mind though that I've never ha the dredge mechanic to pair with it either. If you have threshold within a turn 7 timeframe then I'd say it's worth it. If it takes you forever to get there then I'd leave it out.

i agree with Ohthenoises, getting the threshold could be pretty difficult. nice divining top picture.

Pros:
Comes in untapped
Taps for blue
Cons:
Utility ability requires threshold
Can't be fetched by land type
I'm thinking I might replace my basic swamp with Cephalid Coliseum .

I'm looking at this as if someone Ghost Quarter 's you or Path to Exile 's you then you have less of a chance to get a basic. Add to that your massive draw and the chances of you being able to land (hue hue hue) that land are pretty slim.
Like I said, how often do you have threshold before turn 7? (When I'm guessing is about when you want to be combo-ing out IIRC.)

I usually try to combo as soon as I can; turn 5 or 6 isn't uncommon.
However, with all the fetch lands, tutors, and ramp spells, my graveyard can potentially hit threshold quickly. It's not something that happens every game, though.
I don't think I've ever seen a Ghost Quarter played in any of my games, and Path to Exile rarely gets cast or resolved against me. However, I understand the idea.

Then it's worth it for you. For me? Not so much but if you can get threshold in the first few turns I'd say you're good to go. Nice thing is, if you sac it then Crucible of Worlds it back into play you get another go because it actually pumps your grave. Only thing that worries me there is GY hate. (That's why I love this game, there are answers for everything in almost every color for EDH.)

i wouldn't put it in for a swamp, i would put it in for an Island . and with Crucible of Worlds , it would be awesome!

Two things:
How's testing on Cephalid Coliseum going? The card is working fantastically for me.
And how effective is card:Sensei's Divining Top for you? There's a lot of dislike from the Damia players on that card being in a Damia deck just because it becomes well, not that useful.

@xantm70: Jace, Architect of Thought is mediocre in EDH. Its first and only + ability doesn't have any impact on the game. The -2 is ok, and the -8 is both hard to achieve and not as effective as you might think. Overall, I don't think it's worth including.
@SaberTech: A replacement effect is never triggered - it always changes the event as it happens rather than retroactively modifying the outcome of that event. If Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is on the battlefield, all lands will be Swamps. Thus, they will have the ability "T: Add B to your mana pool." If an opponent attempts to use this ability, a replacement effect changes it to produce colorless mana if B is not in that player's commander's color identity. Mana Web will still tap all that opponent's lands regardless; it checks for types of mana and colorless is a type.
@Wike900: The deck is actually more expensive than that. I don't think the system is taking into account all of the cards. Plus, there are several foils, foreign language, and alternate printings of cards in the paper incarnation of this deck. It's worth it, though.
