Burning-Tree doesn't work with Ash Zealot or Kalonian Tusker.

moffutt10 I know but they are both great creatures to have on your board and having kalonian on the field turn two is great if you don't have a burning tree.

What would you swap in? I can't find something better to replace for a strong card in general to play.

How about these subs:

-4 Lightning Mauler+4 Firefist Striker

-4 Flinthoof Boar+4 Gore House Chainwalker, Scavenging Ooze, or Disciple of the Old Ways

In the 4-drop slot I would consider Polis Crusher or Ember Swallower.

This deck is going to miss haste.

@moffutt10 This deck does indeed miss haste. It seems like this Gruul deck is going to be converted into a ramp deck and play out some bigger Hydras and lost the Wild Beastmaster which makes me sad.

I will continue to test and hopefully improve as this as this current layout is just a brew at the moment.

Speaking of haste, what about running Mistcutter Hydra ? Fits the hydra theme, but has haste. Can drop it as a 1/1 for 1G cost, then pay another RG from Ghor-clan bloodrush for a 5/5 haste. Even better if you can activate battalion with that move.

Cadmeus, That Hydra is in the Sideboard currently. He may end up in the main at some point but I figure he's more of an anti-control Hydra or hurt the opponent for playing mono-blue Hydra :-).

Really wanting to test out Biomass Mutation in place of something. Maybe Armed / Dangerous ? The idea is Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx has allowed me to ramp into 10 mana as early as turn 3 with a Voyaging Satyr and Burning-Tree Emissary s on the board. While I can put out a big Hydra or Giant I could also use all of my mana dorks / devotion rampers in the mid / late game as an actual threat with the Mutation. Also, with Nylea, God of the Hunt on the board they get trample. Just some brewing going on.

I would just replace Armed / Dangerous or Vastwood Hydra with Mistcutter Hydra . I think the card is too good to wait until game 2 to to play, especially with the build you have now. I would also consider going up to 21 lands, adding another forest, unless you have had 0 problems with mana so far.

Love the deck, +1, my brother runs a Mono-Green devotion deck, that plays somewhat similarly to this, and some of the interactions in this deck are just plain disgusting.

I've been going back and forth on the need for Armed / Dangerous . I like it, it has always served me well, but I just think it feels clunky in the deck. The Vastwood Hydra on the other hand adds resilience to the deck. In the event of a board wipe its 2nd ability is useless but on spot removal like Hero's Downfall I can turn my Elvish Mystic into the Hydra with a +1/+1 or even add more counters to my Savageborn Hydra etc. Maybe the better place is for the Vastwood Hydra to be in the sideboard for those circumstances.

Glad you like the deck and thank you for your input.

I really like this deck. I was looking at a whole bunch of versions of this, because I am building a version myself. I was running mono green devotion for a while so please take this advice. Hydra's are not worth it, except for Mistcutter Hydra , but I don't even run it main board. It also depends on the meta game you have. If there are a lot of control decks going on then mistcutter hydra can be main board. Reverent Hunter needs to find it's home in this deck somewhere. If you turn one Elvish Mystic , turn two Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , Burning-Tree Emissary , activate nykthos for three green and play Reverent Hunter with 4 counters on it you have a board state that makes the opponent very scared. This deck should be able to explode on turn three.

4x Polukranos, World Eater is maybe 1 too much, it is after all a legendary creature. Also you could consider Ruric Thar, the Unbowed in sideboard against decks that run a lot of noncreature spells and you have almost only creture spells. I would also move the 2 Mistcutter Hydra to the sideboard. So -1 Polukranos, World Eater and move the 2 Mistcutter Hydra to the sidebard. Then put 3 Boon Satyr in in their place. It is nice with flash and it has a nice bestow ability. It also gives devotion for your Nylea and your Nykthos!Otherwise nice deck and +1 from me!

i suggest removing Savageborn hydra, ran it for ever (until i got my kalonians), my G/R is just well imma have the board full of X +1/+1 counters and imma just swing woot win :)in their place Mistcutter Hydra , to be honest atleast where i go there is esper/MUD/Simic so the counter spells are out there not to mention u can ramp him to 12 w/ the right board cant be countered and has haste psh!

the Gruul War Chant i think is a great add, i mean its a full field madcap skills what could be better

and wth no artifacts :p, Bow of Nylea plus polukranos monsterous = i may have lost my poluk but u lost everything else :p

the hammer u dont use the mana the destroy land blah blah blah, its there for 1 thing hastey but really with ur build u dont really need that, bigger creatures are better w/ haste but in most games u can just sit there and do nothing... but... say esper i have beat them with sylvan carys, lands+nykthos, and 4 mistcutter mainboard...

ive seen ppl throwing Mutavault s in its an ok idea but price vs utility naw im good :)and Glaring Spotlight needs to be in sb mirror is just null and void with it and also acts as a last second HCSMA card

Do you have any results or evidence that this deck is good? I'm thinking of building it and would like to be 100% sure I'm not going to get into it too deep and realise I've wasted some money on the deck. I'm not doubting you or the deck, just would love to see some results or so to reaffirm my beliefs about the deck. +1'd, good to see gruul.

I don't ever have time to go to FNMs with wife and two kids but I've gotten a lot of games in via cockatrice and at home with friends. It's a fun deck to pilot.

http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=62358[essentially the same build, get out big creatures use PW or w/e means to ramp into something huge and BR the crap outta it, 2 of these decks got into top 8 in indy sat/sun so even if u branch off of this tappedout build into the scg build ur still getting close to the same result

1 Hero's Downfall 2 Doom Blade 3 Celestial Flare 4 Merciless Eviction 5 Pacifism anything to handle that might be usefulIe. Alpha Authority or maybe Mending Touch you can attack with something huge and then bloodrush the crap out of it.. then they''ll say "in response, Doom Blade "

I have a quite similar deck (minus the Domri Rade and the second Nylea, God of the Hunt ) and it plays very well in local tournaments. I would add a couple Reverent Hunter and my deck even works with one or two Worldspine Wurm , but that is about to not be standard. -You have been +1'd

mikesgordon says... #24

not really a bloodrush deck. I mean you have one bloodrush card from what I see.

Combine these bloodrush cards (of course Ghor-Clan too) with Wild Beastmaster and pump up your little guys for the win

Wrecking Ogre , Wasteland Viper , Slaughterhorn ,Colossal Might

Wild Beastmaster

would love some comments on my bloodrush-ish deck as well!
