In the past, I had a Stax/Enchantress Estrid, the Masked deck and a Ninjutsu Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow deck. Although I disassembled both decks, they always held a special place in my heart. I often found myself looking back at the cards that had been collecting dust on my shelf.

Recently, a friend of mine went on a trip to Japan and brought me back a Japanese booster. Out of the booster, a ninja leapt out with Ninjutsu and threw a frog in my face. To me, this felt like a sign to bring out my old enchantments and, with the power of Frogjutsu, build a new deck.

For the power level of the deck, I believe I’ve upgraded it from a 7 (optimized deck) to a high-power 8.5. However, it still needs a lot of testing to determine whether it leans more toward an 8 or a 9. It would be awesome if it ends up being a 9, but time will tell.

In the bracket system, it firmly belongs in Tier 4 – High Power.

How i rate my decks:

  • Jank (1): a slow, awkward, or unreliable deck, a deck where all creatures have hats on.
  • Casual (2-3): a deck not intended for sanctioned tournament use, commanderprecons.
  • Focussed (4-5): a fun deck for Friday night magic, your upgraded precon, deck with theme, budget.
  • Optimised (6-7): a good deck for Friday night magic, good synergy, you have a way to win, good interaction, good manabase.
  • High power (8-9): A very powerfull deck, you can win fast, you have almost all the good cards, no budget, your missing some cards to make it competitive, you can stop others from winning, powerfull synergy, almost perfect manabase.
  • Competetive (10): A deck to win as fast as possible and preventing other from winning, you play the best commanders, you have all the best cards for your deck, your still testing and researching to make your deck better then competitive (11)

How My Tatsunari, Toad Rider Commander Deck Works

This deck has evolved into a storm/combo powerhouse, shifting away from combat in favor of infinite mana, spell chains, and game-ending combos. The goal is to generate massive value through enchantments, tutors, and recursion, leading to explosive storm turns or infinite loops.

Core Concept: Storm, Combo, and Resource Advantage

The deck revolves around casting spells in rapid succession, generating mana loops, and leveraging enchantment synergy for card draw, recursion, and combo potential. Tatsunari, Toad Rider remains an important piece, providing constant life drain and synergy with enchantments.

Key additions have reshaped the deck:

  • Bolas’s Citadel enables storm turns by casting spells from the top of my deck.
  • Diabolic Intent & Enigmatic Incarnation increase tutor consistency.
  • Seasons Past allows for huge recursion loops when paired with infinite mana.
  • Protection tools like Counterspell and Heroic Intervention keep combos intact.

Phase One: Ramping and Assembling Key Pieces

Early game, the focus is on building a strong mana base to enable storm turns and combo setups.

Ramp and Mana Enablers:

  • and-based ramp: Simic Growth Chamber, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl.
  • Creature-based ramp: Bloom Tender, Krosan Restorer, Magus of the Candelabra.
  • Infinite mana enablers: Freed from the Real, Pemmin’s Aura.

With infinite mana, I can cast and recur spells endlessly, leading to a game-ending sequence.

Phase Two: Digging for Combos and Storming Off

The deck thrives once I can consistently draw cards, recur spells, and assemble infinite combos.

Card Selection and Recursion:

  • Mirri’s Guile lets me filter the top of my deck, helping Bolas’s Citadel function better.
  • Gloomshrieker recurs key pieces from the graveyard.
  • Seasons Past loops allow for infinite recursion and storm turns when paired with tutors.

Main Combo Paths:

Infinite Mana Combo:

  • Bloom Tender / Krosan Restorer + Freed from the Real / Pemmin’s Aura = Infinite Mana.
  • Use infinite mana to fuel storm turns, tutors, and recursion loops.

Exquisite Blood Combo:

Exquisite Blood + a life-drain trigger = infinite life drain, winning the game.

Storm Loops with Bolas’s Citadel:

Play spells off the top of my deck, drain life, and use recursion to keep going.

Phase Three: Closing the Game

With an infinite mana engine or storm sequence in place, the deck aims to end the game in a single turn.

Win Conditions:

  • Exquisite Blood Loop – Infinite life drain kills opponents.
  • Storm Kill – Repeated spell casts through Bolas’s Citadel / Seasons Past create a game-winning chain.

Mana Loops into Overwhelming Advantage – Infinite mana allows for tutors, recursion, and overwhelming spell advantage until victory is secured.

Final Thoughts: Powering Up for the Meta This is now a high-power combo/storm deck designed to punish opponents who always target me. Playtesting will determine if I need even more protection, but one thing is certain: they will feel my wrath.

These are the players I sit with most often at the table and do not beleave in frogs. This are the "typical" decks they play.

Player 1: Is a master of artifacts. He always builds decks revolving around artifacts, such as Saheeli and Breya. He also has a discard/sacrifice deck led by Tergrid, but he doesn't bring it out very often. His decks are well-built, and I definitely shouldn't underestimate him.

Player 2: This player has extensive knowledge of the game (ex-judge) and can pilot any deck well. He builds a lot of decks (with proxies) and always surprises us with something new. He sometimes netdecks, so there's no specific playstyle, although sacrifice strategies frequently appear.

Player 3: All of his decks are tribal. He has a Merfolk, Vampire, Spiders, and Faeries deck. He always ensures enough control in his decks to avoid board wipes.

Player 4: He has a big budget, so he has access to many cards. He's not great at building or piloting decks, but he loves janky plays, kingsmaking, politics, trashtalk, and jokes during the game. I need to stay focused and prevent alliances from forming with him at the table. He has a large variety of decks: you'll often see tribal, jank, unique, and land-based decks.

Player 5: He's very good at building underdog decks. He often flies under the radar and wins out of nowhere with a combo or by stealing the win from someone who's put in a lot of effort. He enjoys playing with weenies, combos, and the graveyard.

Player 6: He plays on an extreme budget but can pilot a deck very well. He uses cheap and bizarre cards (you can't replicate his style) and always manages to snag a win. He enjoys playing luck-based decks, -1/-1 counters, enchantments, aggro, dragons, etc.

Players 7 and 8: Are new players who are currently using precons from Bloomburrow (Animated Army).

Player 9: He enjoys control and playing in the background. Oloro, Sen Triplets, and Grand Arbiter are decks he enjoys playing. In 1v1 or Two-Headed Giant, he often pulls out his cat deck, which is very strong. He also enjoys experimenting with the color black.

Updates Add

A major update to my EDH deck! I’m shifting from a combat/storm strategy to a storm/combo powerhouse. To make storming more consistent, I’m adding Bolas’s Citadel, alongside extra tutors: Diabolic Intent and Enigmatic Incarnation.

New Combo Packages: Exquisite Blood brings in the classic lifegain/lifeloss infinite combo.

Bloom Tender, Krosan Restorer, and Magus of the Candelabra join the deck to generate tons of mana, enabling infinite loops with Freed from the Real and Pemmin’s Aura.

With infinite mana, I’m adding Seasons Past for a powerful combo chain.

Support & Protection: Simic Growth Chamber helps Magus of the Candelabra and Krosan Restorer go infinite more easily.

Counterspell and Heroic Intervention keep my combos and board state safe.

Mirri’s Guile and Gloomshrieker add some spicy goodstuff—helping me dig for combo pieces or recur key cards.

I’ll need to test the list to see if I need more protection, but my goal is clear: a high-power combo/storm deck.
