Doran Wish Bridge

Modern

Sideboard

A controlling Abzan deck splashing red designed to abuse Ensnaring Bridge.

Most Doran decks in modern I've seen lean towards aggro, running cards like Nyx-Fleece Ram and Spellskite. I opted to go a more controlling route, eschewing these cards (despite the merits of Spellskite) to include more removal and hand disruption. Doran is a threat that can be easily tutored via Treefolk Harbinger or Glittering Wish that, most importantly, can attack under Ensnaring Bridge.

Ensnaring Bridge is amazing at shutting down decks that win via creatures in Modern, and this deck breaks the symmetry, allowing us to attack with 3/3s and 5/5s with the Bridge in play. The 1/1 fliers from Lingering Souls and Bitterblossom are common wincons under a Bridge as well, simply wait until main phase 2 to empty your hand so you can attack with your fliers.

Often it is correct to "sandbag" your bridges. Wishing for a Loxodon Smiter against decks that run Liliana of the Veil is often a smart play, preventing them from using Liliana's +1 without a massive tempo swing until you feel comfortable casting the Smiter. Bridge is a non-bo with Smiter so in a situation such as this, it is often correct to hold off on the bridge until you fear getting overrun. Versus a deck such as Eldrazitron, however, you certainly want an active bridge as quickly as possible.

Glittering Wish is an interesting, underutilized card in Modern. Our wishboard allows us to present a myriad of answers to various strategies game 1 without diluting our deck's game plan. The wishboard is really personal preference; one could run Spellskites in their place and run a traditional sideboard, I really just love making wishes. The red splash really only exists to support our wish options; Slaughter Games wrecks combo decks of all sorts and can be cast turn 3 if you go turn 1 Bird, turn 2 wish. Boros Charm is a good wish target if building a large board state against decks with Wraths that forces them to delay their Wraths until they have counter backup, while also providing unexpected reach. Firespout is a wrath that can be tutored, but you MUST pay careful attention to your mana if on the Firespout plan against aggro. Often it is correct to cast it using no green mana to preserve your Birds or flying tokens to make it a one-sided wrath.

The wishboard is in a constant state of flux, and suggestions are welcome. A recent cut from the wishboard is Mardu Ascendancy, a powerful combo piece with Doran, essentially giving all your tokens +3/+3 for a turn. Seems like it could close out games often, but I found the opportunities to not arise very often in testing.

Treefolk Harbinger is amazing for color fixing, tutoring up a threat (Doran), and becoming a small threat in it's own right with Doran in play.

The sideboard and manabase are still very much a work in progress, and suggestions are very welcome.

Feel free to comment any questions about the deck.
