Nice deck mate. How do you think Athreos, God of Passage will fare in this deck? I definitely think he is a great edition.

Beaverslash, the plan is to not see a lot of our creatures end up in the graveyard. The deck is played defensively as needed until we can cast an Obelisk and begin delivering explosive, painful death.

Also, what would you cut to add Athreos?

What I am worried about this is things like Drown in Sorrow. It is a popular card and Athreos may serve as a backup. Maybe -1 on Obelisk of Urd and Mardu Woe-Reaper and add?

Nelstone says... #5

Drown in Sorrow will only affect Bloodsoaked Champion and Mardu Woe-Reaper if at least one Chief of the Scale is in play. If two are, everyone is out of range. Once an Obelisk is in play, all creatures are out of -2 range.

Feel free to build this deck and include Athreos, God of Passage. If you do, playtest and report back on the results. Thanks!

Any thoughts on Athreos, God of Passage? I didn't read all the comments so idk if it was discussed already

SpaderAce, please see comment #51.

Have you thought of Dragon Throne of Tarkir ? its cheaper to cast than Obelisk of Urd and it grants trample

January 15, 2015 6:23 p.m.

xworkoutxfiendx 4 to cast, 3 to equip, 2 to actually use it

lol no thank you

And Obelisk has Convoke, so we can get that out on turn 3, and it instantly becomes effective as opposed to that thing which takes a couple of eons in order for it to actually do something

Holy crap, sorry lol. I just scrolled down on my phone and commented :P

Anywho, it still seems like a cool deck idea. I like Obelisk of Urd strategies.

Yea xworkoutxfiendx, what PatentOfNobility said. You might be able to run Dragon Throne of Tarkir as a 1-of, but even then it feels like a win-more card, and there isn't anything I'd cut for it.

lol no worries SpaderAce. Thanks! I dig the Obelisk.

January 16, 2015 7:10 a.m.

Sorry. I thought dragon throne was a 3 drop and 2 to equip and I forgot urd has convoke. But amyway I like the build man. Pretty awesome

I kinda feel like the only question we have left is whether we mainboard in Mardu Strike Leader or Brutal Hordechief right?

I can see arguments for both, but tbh controlling blocks is so powerful in an aggro deck like this

I'm kind of in love with Mardu Strike Leader. Leaving behind a 4/3 blocker after attacking with an Obelisk out is incredible.

The Hordechief is amazing, and the blocking mechanism is... brutal. What could we drop to add two while still maintain something of a mana curve? I'm loathe to drop two 2-drops, because then the deck is running more 4 drops than 3. Not that there's much of a "curve" at the moment.

Let's think about the true value of Rush of Battle. It loses points for being at sorcery speed; our opponent can play around it to a degree. It does offer a potentially massive swing in life total, but only for one turn. I included it to be Obelisk #7 and #8 (Sorin being #5 and #6.)

What if we dropped Rush, added a Sorin to make up for it, dropped a few two drops, bumped Strike Leader to 3 and added two Hordechief? Would this be a better deck than running with Rush of Battle? Rush gives us a huge one turn boost, but the Hordechief provides a bigger consistent impact the turn after it comes out.

I'm on the verge of making this change.

Within just a few minutes of playtesting, I'm sold on dropping Rush of Battle, shuffling some numbers and adding two Brutal Hordechief. It feels like a much better draw than Rush for this deck at almost any point in the game. I'm pulling the trigger and modifying this deck.

After further playtesting, allow me to correct myself: Brutal Hordechief provides a bigger consistent impact than Rush of Battle beginning the moment it comes out. Play it on turn 4 for three creatures out: opponent loses 3 life on attack, you gain 3. Factor that out exponentially. Holy shit.

I've preordered two.

The synergy between Brutal Hordechief + Mardu Shadowspear is insane.

This is extreme, but not entirely outside the realm of possibility:

Your opponent takes 8+ unblockable player damage prior to combat damage from the 4 Mardu Shadowspear ability and 4+ more depending on the total number of attacking creatures from Brutal Hordechief ability.

Now, mix an Obelisk of Urd in there somewhere and you've got a party.

Turn 3 Obelisk into Turn 4 Hordechief gonna make the opponent be like

This is amazing. I started on a tribal warrior deck which is similar but still lacking several good cards from fate. Gonna steal this and see if it fits me. Thumbs up!
