Bloodchief Ascension

Megrim

Psychosis Crawler

I'd personally drop Waste Not (For Bloodchief Ascension) and decrease Fate Unraveler to an even 2 copies along with Vampire Nighthawk (to two copies to allow for 2 Psychosis Crawler's). Also drop Howling Mine to two to get two Megrim's

Isn't Liliana's Caress a better version of Megrim ?

Bloodchief Ascension is awesome, i'll try to get my hands on some but it costs a bit much...

Psychosis Crawler seems a bit slow, but i'll get a couple to see how it plays.

Thanks Hipparion !

Harrowing Journey could be a card, its a bit slow though.

Damnable Pact is in my opinion a far better card than Harrowing Journey, you can do the same effect for the same cost or a lower/higher cost if you like depending on the game. It has more options to it, I think it's better overall.

While Damnable Pact has more utility, I would remove one and put a second Dark Deal. Or just replace both for more Dark Deal, since it's the only card that actually makes the other discard something (in that point, I notice a lot of discard interaction cards, and few actual discard cards)

Also, you may want to take a look at Teferi's Puzzle Box. It's great to deal extra damage every turn. And you can maybe replace Geth's Verdict for Smallpox since it has an extra lock and discard.

The thing with the discarding effects is that i want my opponents to draw many many cards and suffer a lot from it, so the discard happens naturally at the end of his turn... That's why i didn't want to play many discarding cards, it would lower the amount of cards in his hand :/ Is it a bad idea ?

Smallpox seems sooooo unfair lol, but i'm afraid of it... I don't want to lose my Master of the Feast or another key creature by hurting myself since the deck contains few creatures. I'm definetely considering it though ! Thanks

No, it's not a bad idea. But the thing is, if you have one Liliana's Caress in play, and your opponent has 7 cards in his/her hand (which will surely have with all the draw you'll make him/her do), you can deal 2,4,6 damage with their discard phase, or 14 damage in one go with Dark Deal in your turn (and if you have Underworld Dreams, it's 20 damage). Heck, even on turn three you can deal as much as 10 damage if you play Liliana's Caress on turn 2 and Dark Deal on turn 3. That's why I see more utility in Dark Deal (also, Damnable Pact needs a lot of mana, so it's either a finisher, or something to assist you)

I think you're right ! Dark Deal seems to hit hard indeed. I add an extra copy and remove a copy of Damnable Pact instead and see how it plays. I might even put more than 2 copys if it really plays well ! Thanks for your help manuati !

I just realised Dark Deal works very well with Waste Not ! Do you think it would be worth it to run more copys of each ?

October 7, 2015 7:07 a.m.

manuati says... #10

Definitely. Consider that if you hit a Dark Deal with a Waste Not on turn 3, you don't only get new cards, but you will have the chance to cast some of them, or get some chump blockers, or just have more card advantage than your opponent. It's a really fun combination. I would have a playset of Waste Not, Dark Deal and Liliana's Caress in the deck, or at least a playset of the last two, and 3 Waste Not, since with all the drawing, you'll easily find it fast.

Also, while it's not so budgety, consider running a couple of Reliquary Tower, so you don't loose any of that sweet card advantage.

Comicaz says... #11

Yeah this seems very powerful on paper =) I'm wondering, if i happen to cast Dark Deal with a Psychosis Crawler on the battlefield, it dies when i discard my hand right ? If yes i might remove the crawlers or reduce it to 1 copy...

Reliquary Tower is fine, i'll try it but with my mana costs such as Underworld Dreams or Sign in Blood this colorless mana bothers me :/

October 7, 2015 8:52 a.m.

LilGuy says... #12

Well you do have 26 cards that use colorless mana, and only 10 that are all one color, so I think Reliquary Tower would work quite well.

What the LilGuy said. Also, maybe you could add a mass removal, at least as sideboard against fast decks (Killing Wave is cheap and force the opponent to maybe lose life to save one of it's creatures)

October 7, 2015 2:27 p.m.

LilGuy says... #14

Well I just stumbled across the card Cursed Rack, it looks pretty amazing in a deck like this, maybe drop 2 Howling Mines for 2 Cursed Racks.

October 7, 2015 4:06 p.m.

LilGuy says... #15

Another card that might be cool is Gnat Miser. Imagine the dream

Turn 4 Cursed Rack

Turn 5 Play 4 Gnat Misers

October 7, 2015 4:11 p.m.

manuati says... #16

Black Vise is another cool card.

October 7, 2015 4:56 p.m.

Comicaz says... #17

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions guys !

Gnat Miser seems very nice ! I was looking for a great one drop besides Bloodchief Ascension and you found it =) i feel like playing at least 3 of these rats. Should i cut the Vampire Nighthawks ? I love this card but it doesnt really fit the theme of the deck, it's just plain strong...

And i don't really want to play less Howling Mines, i'm not sure i can really get my opponent to draw enough cards to make him suffer if i do that. I would reduce to 3 copys if i knew what to replace it for, another drawing engine yes but which ?

Black Vise is awesome and i WANT to play it x4 ! But... i think it's either i play black vise, or gnat miser. I don't really know for now but the synergy between the two isnt so great imo :/

Cursed Rack is indeed powerful and fits the deck well, but since i'm not yet decided wether i take the Black Vise path or the discard path...

What do you guys think ?

And as for the mass removal spells, Killing Wave might hurt me badly because i don't want to sacrifice any creatures this deck contains. I'd play Damnation if i had the funds ! That's why i first thought about Tragic Slip or Geth's Verdict but single removal spells aint so great...

Damn these choices !

Personally, I'm more a control kinda player, so I would go Black Vise over Gnat Miser, but it's more a thing of taste than anything else (also of legality, in case you want to take the deck to Modern events or something). Then, as far as removal goes, at least as sideboard, how about Bile Blight? It's especially effective against tokens.

Oh sh**. I just discovered Memory Jar. That thing would be nasty in here.

October 8, 2015 1:34 p.m.

LilGuy says... #20

Personally I would go with Gnat Miser because of the discard synergy you have with Liliana's Caress and Waste Not.

October 8, 2015 2:03 p.m.

Comicaz says... #21

I tried some changes, went for the Gnat Misers and playtested a couple hands, my deck seems to become very dangerous approximately on turn 4. But it is hard to tell when not playing against someone =)

Also, this is my first deck meant to play a format, i chose modern but have 0 knowledge of it's meta. Do i stand a chance at actually winning some games ? Or be competitive ? I'd like to hear some advice from you guys on that.

Please tell me by all means if you have any ideas for the mana base or the sideboard (which i have much trouble with), and most important the mainboard ! This is just the first version of the deck that i made with your help ! Thanks !

October 8, 2015 4:49 p.m.

manuati says... #22

Can't say I have a lot of experience with the format, so I can't say if you're competitive enough or anything. What I CAN do is give you this: http://mtgtop8.com/

That page holds the most used decks of different formats. You can check there to see the most popular decks and cards used. A deck like yours, in particular, is not one of the most used, but that doesn't mean that it can't give a good fight! Just be aware what kind of things you can face in the format and plan accordingly.

What about cutting more into Red to get some more "Dark Deal - Effects"? They come pretty cheap in lots of variants in Red. Maybe better than just letting your Opponent Draw cards and hope he has to discard EOT.Further on you disrupt enemy Plans. When you face a Wheenie Aggro deck you will find that enemys can easily drop 3-5 Cards a turn. So no Discard EOT; no Profit yor U.

E.G: Wheel of Fortune, Burning Inquiry, Incendiary Command, Reforge the Soul or Wheel of Fate

You could cut off Cards like Damnable Pact, Gnat Miser or Howling Mine for it.So you garantuee the Discard effect.

And IMHO 20 lands are way to few. would go more for like 23-24. And Ofc with more red just pick up some Dual Lands.

Have you ever thought about putting in one or two Damnable Pact as a possible finisher?

Also +1, I really like these type of decks.
