Wuddup MadLuckKing, dyou do any testing with The Scarab Dude, a lot of people are trying to sell me on him and many pros say that's one of the best cards in Standard...hmmm might have to give in to the hype at least test with him...although it's not like I really need him at all right now, Ixalan might change that as we will loose all other wincons; Chandra, GDD, Kali, and even Sphinx which is really MVP vs other Control decks.

I run Scarab God in my Grixis Control deck and it has won me games. If you can untap with it, it just takes over games. I won a game at my game day by taking my opponents Ishkanah and getting the delirium effect (I run some cycle lands too). Being able to get a Gearhulk back is super sweet too.

Not great in the control decks with little to no creatures, so I would have a backup plan in the side to replace him in those situations.

Facebeater Cool, you run how many copies main/side?

Right now, just the one since I've just been testing with it, but after everything rotates out, I'm considering using two to draw it more consistently. I haven't lost a game yet when it's stuck and I've untapped with it next turn. Plus it doesn't die to Abrade, which is a plus haha.

It's a threat which has to be answered immediately or it takes over the game. If for some reason they waste a removal spell on it and bounce it back to your hand, that's one less removal they have for our Gearhulks. Or we can cast Gearhulk on their turn on 6 mana, then if they deal with Gearhulk, we can play it with 7 mana up next turn pretty safely and have 2 mana up for a counter or removal spell. Overall, just seems good. Plus the look on their faces when you start killing them with their own creatures is priceless. Killed a dude with his own Angel of Invention when playing against a Gift deck - pretty hillarious.

Im interested in other people's opinions though if they have tested with it, but I'm a fan.

Just swapped 2 Chandras for 2 Scarab Gods....

I really don't have the habbit to swap things before rotation but for one thing Chandra's Price is only gonna go down from here and I won't be using her in other formats. I'm keeping Kalis and 1 copy of Lily for Modern so they can stick around :D.

okkkkk so I'm about 10 games in, I won about 7-8 of those and I feel like more than 50% of every match-win is due to him. He's definitely the real deal!

Yes keep me updated some more on The Scarab God please.

I have been playing a / deck in some form since kaladesh now ( first it was a delirium list, and then now a / energy list) and I think soon i'm looking for a change.

I actually got most of the mana base for grixis control already, just would now need the gearhulks, chandras, and bolas. I actually got for myself a foil The Scarab God too early on from trading at prereleases which is pretty sweet.

Delta-117 Awesome! Hey dude I don't think you need Chandras anymore! Seriously I took out both of mine for the Gods and I haven't been missing them too much. Honestly I never thought I would say this since Chandras served me so well but I just found myself not needing that many sweepers this time around, seems like people are banking a little more on midrange threats so we are doing very fine with our typical 1-for-1 or 2-for-1 moves.

As far as sending the two 3/1 haste guys, nothing will replace that but the Gods actually give us a lot more presence. Often we were dropping a Chandra, doing some good work, but we knew they often were gonna die soon after that since apart from a little sweeping action, they didn't protect themselves after that, whereas these Gods are massive on their own and can resuscitate whatever we need. I LOVE the feeling of tutoring for shit in the yards, especially when I plan for it ahead of time by killing something (or letting something die) that I want to bring back.

I shoulda done this switch earlier, I didn't want to buy into the hype and couldn't see myself tapping out for Scarab (which turns out is totally fine VS 70% of the field). People are already trying to slot answers against it, but unless they run white with exile effects or dedicated blue-counter deck, it just takes over, real quick!

Hey EastsideRock, been successful in a couple of my games even without the hulk. Couldn't wait to see how much more beast it is with him so I've got 3 on the way lol. Since Transgress the Mind will be rotating out soon I decided to try Doomfall instead and it's pretty solid. Might consider giving it a go yourself once you have to work it out.

I will start putting together my own grixis list soon. I'm a bit saddened Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet will be rotating, I have been playing 2 of him ever since the card first came out across several black based standard decks. Has to be one of my favorite magic cards of all time since I first started in Journey into Nyx. Will be giving The Scarab God a try in his place too.

Hey peoples, long time no see. I'm just curious about what you guys think of the Bloodcrazed Paladin. Do you think he might be good enough to play, while mostly being 2/2 or 3/3 flash creature? He might be good enough since he can be great with The Scarab God as well, having base p/t 4/4 instead of 1/1. :3

One thing with The Scarab God that I have a problem with is that if I tap out for him at turn 5, then the opponent can just kill it and swing with their creatures. I'm wondering if there is a better way I could play, like maybe have a boardwipe the turns before or should I leave him for later in the game?

Btw this is for u EastsideRock, will the best rotating cards be going into your "Retired MVP's" or something? Just thought I'd give u the idea if u haven't thought of it already.

Thing in the Ice will be hard to replace, but I do like to have a 2 or 3 CMC defensive dude. Bloodcrazed seems like a cool card, but I usually shy away from cards that aren't good on their own. He would also be unplayable VS decks that don't run a lot of creatures like us. Perhaps in the side VS creature heavy decks but I think that he will definitely shine AGAINST decks like us who like to wrath the opponent! Clearing the board and having them drop a 5/5 for 2 at instant speed will suck!

Regarding my Retired MVPs section, yeah that's the plan! Most cards that played key central roles will get their own line, while good support cards might have a mention within a MVP's descroption.

So I made my own version of the deck anyways EastsideRock, what do you think of it so far? As of the moment, black is mainly just a splash in the deck so far, for Nicol Bolas and then some sideboard cards really. This might change upon the release of Ixalan and after seeing the full spoilers, which by the way I'm also building this deck from the point as if BFZ/SOI blocks have already rotated.

The sideboard isn't done yet anyways but I feel it's a decent start. My meta tends to be mostly aggressive decks playing cards ranging from Scrapheap Scroungers, Dread Wanderers, Wayward Servants, Lord of the Accursed, Gifted Aetherborn, Voltaic Brawlers, Bristling Hydras, Walking Ballistas, Glorybringers, you get the idea by now i'm sure.

There were two other current control players with Torrential Gearhulks but with school starting back up for many, my lgs has unfortunately lost about 4 of our regular players who for school have moved away. So now it's mainly aggro decks I have to deal with if I was to build this.

Anyways, any feedback is appreciated on this!

Yeah I like that card, it seems promising I was thinking as a 1-2x of in a control deck perhaps.

EastsideRock says... #20

Yeah, I'm liking it too. Easy to drop without tapping out, good to sink mana in when nothing else to play at opponent's EOT, and repeatable pseudo-removal as payoff. 1-2 copies seems right, and it's so crucial for us to be dropping lands every turn, fixing is great to have.
