so are the Perilous Voyage, no real need for Extraction I find
October 13, 2017 6:24 p.m.
Hi everyone!
I recently took a similar list to this (it was originally going to be this but I made some last minute changes) to state championships and made top 8. I should have made it further except for some REALLY bad luck (and it was bad luck, not just me complaining). Anyway, I thought I'd update you and let you know my changes.
First off, my changes were:
Main deck:
Out: 3 Harsh Scrutiny, 2 Gifted Aetherborn, 1 Unlicensed Disintegration, 2 Perilous Voyage and 1 Evolving Wilds.
In: 2 Disallow, 1 Harnessed Lightning, 2 Glimmer of Genius, 1 Torrential Gearhulk, 2 Magma Spray and 1 Spirebluff Canal.
Sideboard:
Out: 2 Spell Swindle , 1 Star of Extinction, 1 Commit, 2 Magma Spray and 1 Scarab Feast.
In: 2 Duress, 2Lost Legacy, 2 Chandra's Defeat, 1 Bontu's Last Reckoning.
First I'll go over my changes. Mostly they were to shore up my bad matchups, but some were also becuase I didn't like cards.
Harsh scrutiny was consistently underperforming, so that went. Disintegration went simply because I wanted cheaper removal. Perilous voyage was, much as I hate to admit it, never good for me.
I added disallow because I didn't feel like I had enough hard counters, and it payed off. I still lost the quaterfinals because I couldn't find it, though. Glimmer came in because I wanted more card advantage, and it also performed very well. Gearhulk was critical in winning one of my matches, as it was the last threat in my deck. Magma spray was against mono-red, as I liked it better main deck than aetherborn in that matchup.
My sideboard was less good, I almost never wanted the second Reckoning, so I will be taking that out. Lost legacy was critical, it won me several games. Duress was also very good, although I didn't play many games against control. I'd still play the pair though. I didn't play against RDW, so I don't know about defeat, I might swap them out.
My only loss in the swiss was to the player who came second, and if I'd played better third game and not run in to Coup I would have won probably.
All in all I think it is a solid deck, I really liked most of the changes I made, which were against a broad meta as I didn't know what was being played, and there were not as many carnage tyrants as I thought.

eragon795 Awesome!! Thanks for the nice report and explaining your changes!!
All in all, I continue to not face as many Tyrants as in the first two weeks, so I will also make some changes. In the board I'm thinking of -1 Gifted, -1 Star. I like the idea of Chandra's Defeat against Chandra PW and RDW, I think I will try two of those since they will have awesome use both VS RDW and midrange decks running red.
It's pretty weird reading about you guys not liking Harsh Scrutiny because it continues to really rock for me with them! Early game they are so boss, getting to know what opponent is about to deploy to know how to perfectly deploy answers, + that scry synergizes with that and/or for fixing really feels good to me. The Perilous are pretty much the same idea: stall + scry is great in early game and I do use them VS some control decks, good against the enchant/land cycle, or any thing that accumulate counters too. Hey but I can't blame you for wanting to play more Glimmers and Disallow hehe. (more Glimmers makes sense since you got rid of 5 scrying sources).
What did you end up mainly naming with Legacy? I don't have experience with that card.
October 14, 2017 2:19 a.m. Edited.
Legacy I brought in most matchups (not against aggro) but I named Approach, Carnage Tyrant the one time I played it, Hydra, Scarab god, and once I named glimmer against jeskai control (which I thought was approach beforehand). That's the only reason I won that game though. It really overperformed.

I was wondering your thoughts on a Field Of Ruin in the deck?

chambers47 I did think about it but haven't been really needing landing hate do far. It certainly wouldn't be a mistake to slot one somewhere in the 75, but haven't really been needing it personally.

Field of Ruin and more Evolving Wilds would also help fuel Search for Azcanta Flip, although it might not be worth it if it screws your manabase, and Search for Azcanta Flip isn't the main focus, unlike other control decks.

Star of Extinction is land hate :P
I missed a bunch of standard so far this season, and didn't get search for azcanta while they were cheap. I'm just building the list now, what do you think would best replace them; my ideas were Sorceress spyglass, thaumatic compass, or just some more removal.
Also how's the list been working so far?

Wuddup MadLuckKing! Recently took out Star because not facing as many Tyrants as expected. List has been working really good honestly, I'm having a blast this standard!
Azcanta is the best man, so hard to replace. You might want to try with the cards you mentioned or just go for a sure bet with Supreme and/or Glimmer.

Ive been running your grixis control for a while now and Ive been enjoying it a lot. Of course Ive done my own modifications to the deck, one of which is you need to replace the two aetherborn with two saheeli. She works extremely well with gearhulk and scarab. Copy a creature in your opponents graveyard just to make another copy with saheeli is great! Or just copy your gearhulk. The extra scry and 1 point of damage each turn puts your opponent on a clock as well. All of this paired with being able to control the board state she hasnt been a disappointment to me yet. I ran her when we had dark dwellers and thing in the ice in the deck and she perform well in it as well.

Why Harsh Scrutiny over Fatal Push? I feel like drawing into Fatal Push in a scenario when they're creature is on board would happen a lot more often than taking one out of their hand when they don't have a threat. Also how effective is running Gifted with the mana base by risking for getting double black in that you turn their removal on due to lack of creatures in the deck and do you feel cycling lands aren't necessary/too slow for this deck anymore with the check lands?

Xanosuke2 Thx for the feedback! Indeed, we ran her for a little while in a past meta but she wasn't bringing enough and wasn't always hitting stuff. Glad she is working out for you! I prefer to scry with Harsh, Voyage and Azcanta myself!
MattN7498 We've talked a lot about Push here, but in our shell we don't enable Revolt nearly enough to have it played over Magma (or even now Chandra's Defeat). Harsh Scrutiny is still one of my favorite newer add-ons to the deck. Of course it doesn't always hit, but we still always get to see what's coming and scry which is so underrated and really gives us a lot of value for 1 little mana (to prove my point, I even let them in VS creature-less decks...!). Gifted is not a must drop on turn 2, but it does often help a lot to stall long enough to reverse the tides (even if dropped later), I feel it has done enough work for me to justify its presence.

Okay awesome thanks! I was planning on taking my Grixis List I've been toying with the past year to GP Atlanta in two weeks so was just trying to make some decisions on some cards based on the meta slightly changing everyday.
October 27, 2017 9:25 a.m.
Also what are your feelings on Censor? I've been thinking about it in my list for really efficient Azcanta fuel and can hit any spell but feel like it loses a lot of reach after boarding, especially if it doesn't work well in pre board and just ends up being useless in the deck
October 30, 2017 10:58 a.m.
I dont actively try to flip search unless I hit that second copy in my hand. Its too valuable as a scry for free every turn and setup a gearhulk or even scarab.
October 30, 2017 5:36 p.m.
Another card that does well in this deck is failure//comply. It hits tyrant, it adds value to harsh, and gearhulk can hit th comply to stop anything thats problematic, or just failure again. Its all around a great card for the current meta and with hubs youll hardly notice the white mana on comply. I dont even alter the mana base for it and it runs like a charm.

MattN7498 Censor can be great early game, but goes down drastically later in the game. I never really liked cards like that - but that's totally my taste and playstyle. I know you can cycle it out but at this point, I'd rather just draw anything else.
Xanosuke2 You're right about Azcanta, depending on the context, sometimes it's just better to keep scrying. Lol @ Failure//Comply that is some deep tech there! I can see it, but personally I'd rather just have an extra hard counter. Voyage is an exception because the scry 2 can be huge.
October 31, 2017 11:55 a.m.
Hard counter is great but it doesnt hit tyrant...and in a world where temur its a big part of the meta abraded are a thing so aetherborn rogue dies a lot to abrade...at least in my game shops it does. I normally just had failur//comply in my side board and depending on matchup I swap them in.

Xanosuke2 Agreed, but if you really want to hit Tyrant, having to have both Failure AND Scrutiny to deal with him is not optimal. Combination of board wipe and sac effect will hit more often than that.
October 31, 2017 6:14 p.m.
Meh at 3 copies of harsh and only 2 copies of failure//comply and 3 gearhulks, and I guess 2 scarab into a eternalized hulk, youd see the failure harsh combo more often than not. Even just failure into a hulk that hits comply can deal with a tyrant, or hydra/glorybringer if your up against temur.
October 31, 2017 9:21 p.m.
So I went to GP Atlanta, I went:Match 1 jund energy 2/0, match 2 Temur Energy 2/1, match 3 Temur Energy 0/2, match 4 Temur Energy 2/1, match 5 Temur Energy 1/2, match 6 god pharaohs gift 0/2, match 7 jund Energy 1/1/1, match 8 Temur Energy 1/2...after that I dropped and went home...temur net deckers man...there is a guy tho currently only having 1 lose thats playing grixis control with 2 scarab and 3 hulks and a butt ton of counters XD

chambers47 I tried it a few weeks ago but I found it too slow and too narrow. The 4 Gifted and 3 Magma are very solid VS aggro.
