Ever considered Warstorm Surge?

August 8, 2015 9:05 a.m.

darthskat says... #3

When I first decided on a token deck, Warstorm Surge was in my 99 but i'm dropping 1/1s, for 2 less mama and industructibility, Purphoros, God of the Forge deals 2 dmg per creature.

Warstorm Surge belongs in a Mayael deck.

But thanks for the suggestion.

How about Cathars' Crusade?

August 11, 2015 12:07 p.m.

I ran Cathars' Crusade for a while but everytime i drew it i dreaded the dead card. it does nothing the turn i cast it..i realized im better off with an empty board and just focus on ramp until i can cast Hazezon Tamar.

How about Ogre Battledriver or Anger instead of Flame-Kin Zealot for more consistent haste?

August 12, 2015 6:43 p.m.

darthskat says... #7

Anger isn't consistent if I can't consistently get him(?) Into the GY. Ogre Battledriver was also in my deck at one point but got replaced on the same basis as Cathars' Crusade.

One of the biggest if not the only downside of Hazezon is the delayed trigger. It's not Avenger of Zendikar, I get my tokens the next turn. So I would need to cast Ogre Battledriver/Cathars' Crusade, then the 2nd turn cast my general, then the 3rd turn I would get my dudes with untapped mana.

I would rather ramp to get more dudes than have board presence that telegraphs my plans.

Ramp to 7 land asap. Cast Hazezon Tamar, untap and then That's when I drop my haste makers and my haymakers (Goblin Bushwhacker + Beastmaster Ascension for example) ftw.

With the sac outlets getting Anger into a graveyard shouldn't be a problem. I feel like any time you cast Hazezon people should know things are happening next turn :)

Im building my own Hazezon thanks for all the ideas!

What do you think of the new Oblivion Sower that is coming out in the new Battle for Zendikar set? I think it might fit well in a Hazezon deck. For 6 mana you can most likely get 1 or 2 extra lands and a 5/8 fatty for your opponents to worry about before the tokens swarm.

I'm excited for the block as a whole. I'll be buying the duel deck (I always do) for the foil Avenger of Zendikar. But I'll wait for more spoilers after August 29th to make a decision. I feel in a deck built around exiling libraries he would be a house but just as a 6 drop, I could whiff pretty bad.

We'll see.

Personally I feel like you need Exploration. And if you can swing it, Azusa, Lost but Seeking would be a great addition.

August 24, 2015 11:27 a.m.

darthskat says... #13

I want to play both of these cards and I would love to invest in getting an Azusa, but how do I fill my hand with lands to take advantage of these two cards?

Dual Nature and Minion Reflector.......Think about it. With Hazezon Tamar it is gold.

So I was thinking that since I feel that the deck is as good as it could get while not running any oppressive combos, and that I can't find any Hazezon Tamar primers online, now would be a good time to write one.

I hear all the time "Rith, the Awakener or Rhys the Redeemed are better token gen commanders." I disagree and think I can put up a pretty good argument in my favor.

Thoughts? Any reason I shouldn't try to make a primer? Can anyone post a primer that already exists?

Thanks for the +1 man. I actually used your soul sister primer a few months ago when I dropped my baby toe into modern. I was on a major budget so good things didn't happen but I loved how you broke down your deck. Any good formating tips?

darthskat,
Great deck, +1!

I've just started with Hazezon, so please treat my thoughts with skepticism! :-)

  • For additional ETB triggers, I really like Blade of Selves and Strionic Resonator.
  • Have you looked at Shields of Velis Vel? Turn an opponent's creatures into Sand Warriors before Hazezon LTBs, for a one-sided board wipe.
  • How about Reconnaissance? I run it with Rith, and love that card! Fog the field if needed, or untap after the Combat Damage step (i.e., during the End of Combat step) for a Vigilance effect.

Mine is a very different deck (more ETB abuse/less pump), but if you get a chance, I'd appreciate your thoughts and perspective. It's over at Sandbagging w/ Hazezon.

Draw well!

Thanks for the +1! Much appreciated.

Glad more people are discovering Hazezon Tamar and after a few weeks of playing I'd love to hear how he compares to Rith, the Awakener.

As for my build, I'm really not trying to abuse ETB or I would have gone with Roon of the Hidden Realm or the ilk. I traded away my Blade of Selves and Strionic Resonator would also be great of I was going that direction.

Shields of Velis Vel was in the deck for a little wile but never made an impression on me. Super dead early game and not enough late game.

reconaissance does look interesting, though not sure the need for it would be (in relation to making a cut). The least appealing card in my list for me, based on my sighs and slumped shoulders when I top deck it would be Urabrask the Hidden.

darthskat,
That's good to know about the Shields and your Ubarask! Thanks much!

Yeah, I'm not sure if Vigilance+ability to attack without fear is going to be as important to Haz' as it is Rith.

Along those lines, I'm really enjoying the challenge of building this deck ... especially finding the "optimal" set up when Haz' drops and then a turn later when his duddes drop.

By the way, what do you use for Sand Warrior tokens?

Thanks again!

darthskat says... #22

The tokens themselves don't exist. So I use the Khans white warrior tokens that are produced from Secure the Wastes.

darthskat,
Thanks again for your thoughts above and also over on my deck: Sandbagging w/ Hazezon.

I'm finally traded for a Haz' and am getting ready to build the deck in real life, so I wanted to circle back with a few questions:

  • I've been going back-and-forth on adding Omnath, Locus of Rage, and I was wondering about your thoughts on him. I think my deck has more Landfall triggers than yours, but I'd really appreciate your perspective.
  • Another 7-drop I've wondered about is Boundless Realms. When do you cast it vs. dropping Haz'?
  • I've also gone back-and-forth on Yavimaya Elder. What tilted you to "yes" on him?

Also, I owe you a big thanks for Goblin Bushwhacker ... so thanks! :-)

Finally, there's only one thing I might be able to offer your deck: With Nissa added to the mix, I think you may have enough +1/+1 counter synergy now to justify a slot for Cathars' Crusade and/or Forgotten Ancient. I love them with Mycoloth, and like them with just about anybody.

Thanks again, and draw well!

So if you have ways to trigger landfall over and over, a 5/5 is pretty huge. I assume you are playing with all the fetch lands (save Polluted Delta which can't fetch anything) and I'd even run both Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse. If that's the case, yeah Omnath, Locus of Rage and friends are super good.

Q1, do you have any other elementals that could benifit off of his 2nd ability?

Q2, what would you cut to fit a monster like Omnath. You don't want him in your opening hand.

As for Boundless Realms, it's a little situational and will depend on my hand but I play 3-6 man multiplayer games, where go big or go home mentality is king. So I will cast Boundless Realms over Hazezon Tamar 5/7 times just so when I do finally cast him, it's for all the lands in my deck.

When I cast Boundless Realms the whole table knows what's coming, I have a target on my forehead, so I won't do it if I feel I couldn't survive until my million sand nerds finally hit the board.

Lastly is Yavimaya Elder. At one point in the build I had a few more ramp spells and fewer creatures. I felt I had no early board presence and was getting attacked by bears early on. Having a chump blocker that I can sac in response, ramp and draw all in one was a simple choice to make. He's an EDH staple in green and is OP for his mana cost. Make room for him.

As for Forgotten Ancient, I was super pumped when I got him in the new commander set (I always buy all 5) but I just havnt felt I need him yet.

And don't get me started on Cathars' Crusade. Ugh what a chunky ugly card. You need to have it in play before you cast your commander, so that was a turn wasted not ramping. And it does nothing the turn it ETB. I have almost zero cards that need to be in play before my sand dorks have already ETB. Doubling Season is about it and that's the best green card in edh.

Phew. That's alot of typing on a cell.

darthskat,
Thanks TONS for all your thoughts! No kidding--that was a relatively insane amount of typing on your cell, and I REALLY appreciate your investment of time!

On Omnath, Locus of Rage: I don't have that many fetches, but with Ghost Town and recursion I can get very consistent Landfalls. I don't have any Elemental synergy though, and I really don't need another 6/7/8-drop. More and more I'm thinking Om-nath needs a deck of his own more than he needs to be in Haz's 99 ...

On Boundless Realms: Oh, that's just awesome! Probably not what I'm looking for in my group, but awesome nonetheless!

On Yavimaya Elder: I had actually forgotten his chump-blocking goodness! I was on the fence, but he's in now for sure. Thanks!

On Cathars' Crusade: You'll have to trust me that it's flat-out amazing in some decks ... totally got it though that this is not one of them! :-D

Thank you again! And as always, draw well!
