EDH: Heliod Draw (budget)

Commander / EDH WU (Azorius)

Nekophiliac

Cheaper version, dropping any cards $20+

Early game is spent casting mana rocks and cheap creatures or enchantments.

I try not to cast Heliod unless I can protect him at least one or more times the same turn since once people know what the deck is actually doing, they’ll try to hinder him as often as possible.

Once my opponents are drawing 2-4 cards per turn, dropping mana rocks for free at their end steps (or almost free) can take you from being on par for mana to far, far ahead.

Smothering Tithe is an all star in the deck of course, but the number of cheap mana rocks dropping for free can usually end the game even without the Treasure production.

I like to wait until the last end step before my turn to start casting Instant-speed Wheels or mass Draw effects. Heliod rewards you for having opponents draw, but that gives them options. Some players may try to use their new hand to respond. As long as they’re not messing with Heliod, I usually don’t care. But if they ARE trying to Swords or Path or bounce or flicker Heliod, I will cast as many mana rocks as I can in response, and then keep Wheeling and digging for Approach, LabMan, ThOracle or Jace in response.

A couple players at my LGS have started getting uppity about trying to interrupt my combos, so I invested more into the deck to speed it up and give Heliod some more protection and improved card draw (Rhystic Study, Force of Will and such).
