@diatryma

Both sides of a DFC count towards a card's Colour Identity. Since Withengar Unbound  Flip has a Black Colour Indicator, Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip has a Colour Identity of Black.

"903.4c The back face of a double-faced card (see rule 711) is included when determining a cards color identity."

Why does everyone automatically go to withengar? It's not even that good of a card.... Dies to Ratchet Bomb on 0 when flipped....

GlistenerAgent says... #3

I suppose it's a natural step. The card is literally called "EDH".

GlistenerAgent I can see that but I mean really? It's just a big fatty that's hard to get out that can just die to removal when it does hit, hell, Vapor Snag ruins you and that's pretty terrible in commander. I'd rather be spending 7-9 mana on something like Damia, Sage of Stone or Tooth and Nail .

I know mono W can ramp really hard, especially with Sol Ring , Mana Vault , etc but still.

@Ohthenoises There are also cards like Stonehewer Giant or Stoneforge Mystic that can cheat it out much earlier, and Withengar Unbound  Flip is a creature that reads "Answer me or I kill everyone".

Still, people will often say to run the card since it is a huge Timmy card, its big and bad and doesn't die to Doom Blade . I can see why people want to run it, but it really isn't a good card except for more casual settings.

okay so a card dying to removal is a good reason not to run it... damn, better stop playing magic... uh... ever. Thanks for the advice, I quit now.

diatryma No need to be snarky. I run Derevi, Empyrial Tactician for my multiplayer voltron deck for that exact reason. She is only vulnerable to tuck, which I can counter.

Dies to removal is one thing but you want more in a deck like this than a big beefy thing, you want efficient boosts and creatures that are either tough to kill or provide a lot of utility. Beatsticks are less valued than utility. Withengar is purely a beatstick.

lemmingllama when I say "hard to get out" I'm not referring to Elbrus' CMC. I'm referring on the fact that you have to depend on hitting someone to get him to flip. Yes, 8.5 helps in that regard but you can't rely on that alone.

In reference to the other "combat damage to player" equipments I don't look at those abilities first. I look at them as "Pro X and Y and +2/+2" equipments that have some nifty bits that can help. I never look at "combat damage to player" abilities first because you are relying on hitting someone. Quietus Spike is a good example, I used to think it was good but after people just kept finding things to block with it was cut because I couldn't reliably hit.

this looks like one of the most well put together fair EDH decks i've ever seen. Beautifully done and +1 from me.

I'm not sure if these cards are on tapped out yet but Arcane Lighthouse and Assault Suit look pretty good for this deck

@logansullivan

No interest in Arcane Lighthouse , at least for now. I don't currently have any problems with hexproof creatures.

On the fence about Assault Suit . 4 cast and equip 3 for +2/+2 is rough from a Voltron viewpoint, but that "can't be sacrificed" ability is neat.

and the giving it to other people who might send it at people other than you, and if they don't it really doesn't matter that much

November 3, 2014 4:34 p.m.

nahiri should def go in. what about the 1-drop copy artifact. thoughts on that?

November 3, 2014 5:45 p.m.

@logansullivan

Handing out 8.5 isn't an option, as he's used to protect my Equipment from target effects when he'e out. Maybe I would if I had it on some random beatstick, but never 8.5.

@operationremie

Nahiri, the Lithomancer and Masterwork of Ingenuity are both fantastic! They're going in as soon as the decks are released.

I'm pretty much ecstatic that there's new Equipment support. The block sets have been getting very lackluster, especially with most of the Equipment ending up as weak Limited filler. This is a welcome breath of fresh air.

November 3, 2014 6:30 p.m.

it definitely is. :D thanks for making such an amazing deck

also, for those without mana crypt, what would you recommend?

November 3, 2014 8:45 p.m.

WicKid52 says... #17

yeah, the lithomancer kicks butt.

NensouHiebara says... #18

@operationremie

Mana Crypt is essentially a second Sol Ring , so there's no real substitute for it. There's Mana Vault , but that acts more like a colourless Dark Ritual than a mana rock.

Everflowing Chalice is what I used to run before I swapped it for Mana Crypt . It's relevant at all stages of the game.

Mind Stone is also a good early game mana rock with late-game relevancy. Sun Titan turns it into a card draw engine.

November 3, 2014 9:55 p.m.

thanks! :D crypt is out of my pricerange but mind stone does sound good.

Since you're playing a sizable amount of artifacts, Dispatch is not out of the question.

@Robotoken

I don't like removal that requires other cards to function properly.

Wow awesome EDH deck, I can tell you have been playing the format for awhile. I love seeing the Land Tax + Scroll Rack combo. There are not many suggestions I can give you but there are a couple.

Cuts:

Eternal Dragon - I used to love this card back in the day, but they have printed so many good cards that in doesn't make the cut anymore.

Mother of Runes - seems underwhelming, maybe your meta just runs a ton of spot removal?

Adds:

Thran Dynamo - An EDH staple that I was surprised not to see in this deck, with all your colorless spells and equip costs.

Final Judgment - I love this board wipe, especially when I am not running reanimate cards.

Blazing Archon - its expensive but if you like Ghostly Prison..

Masterwork of Ingenuity - This is probably in your deck by now, I see it on your maybe board.

Also thought I'd mention that Martyr's Bond is better than Karmic Justice in my opinion. It's more expensive but it hits all your opponents and works whenever something dies.

+1 high caliber deck.

@Thing2

Eternal Dragon - This dragon is a great utility card. It's an early game land drop, a tutor for Mistveil Plains, and a back-up plan all in one card. It also resets the top of my library for Sensei's Divining Top and Scroll Rack. It's good at any stage of the game and a 5/5 flying body holds Equipment like a champ.

Mother of Runes - An active Mother shuts down targeted effects, provides evasion, and is a champion blocker against anything without evasion. I once forced a Nevinyrral's Disk activation just by trying to equip Mother with Shield of Kaldra. It was early game and nobody else had anything relevant on the board. An indestructible Mother was that much of a threat.

Thran Dynamo - Would rather use Everflowing Chalice. I like its flexibility.

Final Judgment - Not a fan. I prefer having my higher-end sweepers to have a little more of a kick than just sweeping creatures.

Blazing Archon - Too much mana. I'm keeping the top of my curve at 8 with Avacyn, Angel of Hope and I'm not going any higher. I'm happy with Ghostly Prison and Windborn Muse.

Masterwork of Ingenuity - Just bought the Nahiri deck today. Masterwork is absolutely in. I'm going to update my deck sometime this week.

Martyr's Bond vs Karmic Justice:

Bond costs 6, Justice costs 3.

Bond only forces sacrifice on what was destroyed, Justice lets me choose what to destroy, including land.

Bond doesn't trigger off of land destruction, Justice does.

Bond can't be recurred in my deck, Justice can be recurred with Sun Titan.

Karmic Justice is the superior card in my opinion, mostly off of the fact that it costs half the mana and I'm in full control over what gets destroyed.

Just today I stumbled upon Eight-and-a-half-tails as a great commander to try building around, because I've never built a commander deck with white in it. This whole page is proving very helpful as I brew up my own version, thanks!

November 11, 2014 5:13 a.m.

I would suggest Salvage Scout over something like Transcendent Master only because of the utility. I play in a heavy hate filled deck when it comes to most types of permanents, so that is why I make the suggestion. I would also suggest Auriok Survivors for the body and the effect.
