Have you looked into some of the new commander cards from c20? Flawless Maneuver and Sanctuary Blade are very decent in this deck. I know you dismissed them, but flawless maneuver is better than tefferi's protection in this deck because you're using all your mana every turn if it's running right... And if you're tapped out that's when your opponent will generally try to throw off your game plan. Sanctuary blade is very decent, low costed and grants a decent boost for balan. What about Burnished Hart for the mana ramp? Also could suggest Grafted Exoskeleton, just one more equipment and you're dealing lethal. Rogue's Gloves and Mask of Memory are both decent card draw for a deck like this or Infiltration Lens if you're not very evasive. Inspiring Statuary is also very powerful in this deck because equipment tapping doesn't interfere with the deck plan. Trailblazer's Boots is very decent, every deck runs non basic lands. Anyways great deck!

@Monomanamaniac

Flawless Maneuver is currently in my Maybeboard. I like the idea of it being a free save for Balan or a way to spare my board from my own sweepers. I wouldn't call it better than Teferi's Protection though. Protection stops things that Maneuver can't.

And why would I be constantly tapping out every turn? My utility lands and removal spells appreciate me leaving mana open.

-

Sanctuary Blade, Trailblazer's Boots, and those card draw Equipment all have the same problem: they don't do enough. I only have so much space for Equipment, so I need to make every slot count.

  • Sanctuary Blade is pretty weak compared to the Swords, and I only run three of them. Why would I use it over one of the Swords I choose to omit?
  • Trailblazer's Boots has nice evasion, but it doesn't provide anything else. I have plenty of Equipment that offer some form of evasion alongside other boons.
  • Flooding my deck with card draw Equipment dilutes the quality of Equipment in total and negatively affects Balan's performance. Sword of Fire and Ice is the only card draw Equipment I need. I have other card draw sources in this deck to fall back on.

-

I had Burnished Hart before. Took it out as it was a bit too slow for this deck's liking.

-

Grafted Exoskeleton is a no-go for me. Infect (and poison in general) is a greatly hated mechanic. I don't want that negativity attached to this deck. I used to run Inkmoth Nexus, and it wasn't an enjoyable experience for anyone.

-

I have an issue with Inspiring Statuary, and its the word "nonartifact." It can't make Equipment cheaper to cast, and that's a major dealbreaker.

This is different ehh. First strike in Balan is redundant but still, interesting...

This deck seems really fun, I'm in the process of making a similar deck Nazahan with all 7 swords in it, is there a reason you only run those 3 swords?

September 2, 2020 3:52 p.m.

@Spyrechild the Maul is certainly spicy. While the FS is redundant, it's not necessarily redundant for the other creatures in the deck. The pump+flying and auto equip is the real selling point. The closest thing for 3cmc or less that grants flying and offers a meaningful pump would be Angelic Armaments. This is just better than that in a mono-white deck. There are also cheaper equipments to grant flying if it was needed. As is, I'm sure the pro-colors and/or Trample plan is the one Nensou plans to take.

@Spyrechild

I like it. Redundant first strike doesn't bother me when it comes with evasion. Back-up threats still appreciate it.

Coloured Equipment can be a pain sometimes, but I had Godsend in the deck before and dealt with it just fine.

@bigrigroy

I don't run all 7 Swords because they're not all equal in strength. There's a finite amount of space for Equipment in this deck. Can't just shove in every Sword without forethought.

The three Swords I do use are the best of the bunch by a huge margin:

  • Fire & Ice is a card draw engine.
  • Feast & Famine untaps my lands, generating additional mana every turn.
  • Light & Shadow offers protection from the top killspell colours and it brings back my fallen utility creatures.

The remaining Swords are too limited in use:

  • Body & Mind has impractical milling that fuels opposing Graveyard strategies.
  • War & Peace doesn't impact the board or generate value. The lifegain is inconsistent and the direct damage isn't beneficial towards Commander Damage.
  • Sinew and Steel is borderline playable. A 'removal Sword' is interesting, but its choice of targets keeps it from being an auto-include. I have it in my Maybeboard and I'm waiting on what the rest of the Allied Cycle provide before making my final decision.
  • Truth & Justice is just a proliferate engine. This deck doesn't focus on counters, so it doesn't do anything. The +1/+1 counter it comes with every swing doesn't count.

Why must the newest Equipment stuff have to include other colours?

She is rather tasty but boros did need the hand tbh. Not seeing much else so far which is rather disappointing...

Any reason you run Danitha Capashen, Paragon over Foundry Inspector? Danitha only has 16 targets in your list while Inspector has 22 (including Gearhulk).

Three reasons:

  • First strike
  • Vigilance
  • Lifelink

How about scytheclaw ?

NensouHiebara says... #13

@Ninja_skin

Used to run Quietus Spike, and I'd go back to it before Scytheclaw.

Quietus Spike's deathtouch adds a Lose/Lose aspect. Even when attached to a 1/1 token, opponents will have to forfeit a creature to not have their life total chunked. And this gets especially rough when they have nothing expendable to chump with.

Lol that section "Balan's Armory". +1 flavor points

@Spyrechild

Slash the Ranks and War Room will find a place in this deck, but they're not particularly new and exciting.

Hope there's something special yet to be spoiled.

October 30, 2020 6:38 p.m.

@NensouHiebara - http://www.mythicspoiler.com/newspoilers.html Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist and Armored Skyhunter look spicy. Especially the Skyhunter, but Ardenn can help recover from losing Balan and suiting something else up in a pinch

October 31, 2020 9:37 a.m.

Also, RE: Slash the Ranks - isn't this basically just Single Combat like 99% of the time? Same timing restriction, people are more likely to keep their commander (IMO). Guaranteeing that you get rid of the planeswalkers that aren't commanders seems like it'll basically be the same thing as them having a choice of the single thing they get to keep. Factor in that Single Combat also prevents people from playing additional creatures/planeswalkers until the end of your following/next turn, and forces sacrifice to get around a board of indestructible, Single Combat seems like the better choice, no?

War room is a must have, repeatable and reliable card draw in white is a must have. Slash the ranks I’m not to sold on but that might just be my playgroup, quite a few tall commanders kicking around. Thrax sac, Augustine enchantments and Kresh to name but three. Leaving them alive just ain’t an option for me sadly.

@CrimsonWings3689

Slash the Ranks doesn't offer the option of sparing a non-Commander. It's a marginal upside, but I want it.

@NensouHiebara - OMFG, this is not a drill!! Commander's Plate

November 2, 2020 12:02 p.m.

Commander's Plate is going to be insanity level tech! I was so disappointed when I saw that blade that makes 4/4 angels, but this is a must have, just like Keeper of the Accord and War Room. Have you thought about getting Jeweled Lotus once the price stabilizes?

November 2, 2020 12:56 p.m.

NensouHiebara says... #23

@Monomanamaniac

I don't have any desire to use Jeweled Lotus. It's too narrow in application.

What would you say about kusari-gama ? If the oppenent block he got strike on all his creature ?

November 16, 2020 2:23 p.m.

NensouHiebara says... #25

@Ninja_skin

Kusari-Gama isn't that great.

  • 6 mana total for no immediate P/T boost or keywords.
  • Paying for a temporary +1/+0 is expensive.
  • A competent opponent isn't going to sacrifice their entire board to block if they're aren't going to die from that attack.
  • You don't even want to be blocked to begin with.
