Correction

Unexplained Absence can exile multiple nonland permanents and you target a nonland of your own, which can useful in response to someone using a removal spel on your nonland permanent.

Its a reprint yes and an aura but returning all my equips from the graveyard is hell of a strong comeback.

Codsworth, Handy Helper

Decent option to consider, no?

@Spyrechild

Thousand Moons Smithy  Flip has been fine. It can be tricky to transform sometimes when I need specific creatures left untapped or need to attack with.

@gzusvictory

Definitely replacing Stroke of Midnight with Unexplained Absence.

@CrimsonWings3689

I really like Codsworth and I'll try to find a spot for it. A big improvement over cards like Brass Squire.

Recursion on a stick with a small buff. I don't feel like the vigilance is worth much but it is targetable by sun titan.

Thoughts on Sword of Wealth and Power?

“Sword of Wealth and Power Artifact Equipment Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from instants and from sorceries. Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, create a Treasure token. When you next cast an instant or sorcery spell this turn, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy. Equip 2“

Probably negative considering Sword of Once and Future had similar relevance to instants and sorceries, huh?

Regardless of color, it does provide survivability against targeted removal, and certain board wipes that involve damage. It also provides some mana production, which white can always use. Double strike can mean double treasure?

It does not provide unblockability to our Commander, which is crushing to us since we care about chump blockers. It looks like we have only 10-11 instants/sorceries that would make sense in copying with this sword.

I would run it. It’s got the bottom effect of Forge Anew, which is nice since our commander doesn’t help with the initial equip and only passes the equipment around for free. Codsworth is still Reanimate-able. I like that it ramps out our equipment with the second ability. Codsworth helps synergize with our commander by simultaneously protecting it some and speeding up the game plan of equip+kill.

The question really is what would we take out? Probably take out Loyal Warhound or Thousand Moons Smithy  Flip for it?

Loyal warhound is the second iteration to Knight of the White Orchid which is both played in this deck understandably for ramp, but Codsworth ramps out equipment every time while the warhound may miss if you have the greatest or tie the greatest land count.

I haven’t given Thousand Moons Smithy  Flip a shot yet. Seems like a good alternate win con of going wide and synergizes well with the artifact theme, but has nothing to do with helping our equipments get equipped outside of becoming a land.

Chance at a full art foil for the deck is never something to be sniffed at ehh

Lostjitte

Ramp. Sort of. I mean I like all the modes tbh.

Swordofwealthandpower

The copying feels a bit redundant here but making treasures and getting protection from most forms of removal? Sure it will stop us from targeting it with our own protection spells but nothing short of a wipe will take Halvar off the field with it on.

Nice! I am very satisfied with your choices. At prerelease, I pulled the Aven Interrupter, Final Showdown, and Claim Jumper and put them in right away trying to guesses what you would have taken out. I replaced the instant Board wipe with Farewell, took out Reprieve for the plot counter, and the Loyal Warhound for the white explosive vegetation. I will more than likely do the same replacements you made based off your explanations.

Excalibur Sword of Eaden

I mean...yes? Would be bummed to have it in my opening hand but drawing it turn five or six when we already have some other equips or our commander out?

Haystack

Reusable protection is almost non existent. We get to keep our beater with the equipment still attached for our next turn seems fantastic.

I do like the Excalibur a lot! It alone can be lethal with our commander. The challenge comes down to finding a way to cheat it into play. Cheating casting costs of our equipments seems more difficult than cheating equip costs. It helps a lot that our equipments are artifacts, which fits the historic category.

Haystack is nice. Reminds me of Mother of Runes, but cannot protect itself or provide evasion. Keep in mind that it cannot target our creatures that have protection from white since it’s considered a white artifact, and with it not being a creature, it cannot be equipped. There is the advantage of having the ability to use it the same turn it comes out. I can see a common play pattern of playing Haystack prior to playing the threat, and leaving up the additional two mana of course. I know we were also trying to keep our artifact count down and I am curious what we would take out for it. I do like that it can make one of our creatures dodge practically any board wipe. Phasing has some advantages over hexproof, indestructible, and color protection. Timing can be a bit of a challenge not having our threat return to defend us until our next untap rather than the end of the turn we use the Haystack. Not a fan of having to keep up mana up when there’s things like Giver of Runes, which can activate for free (and also did not currently make the deck). I would probably recommend adding Haystack if your playgroup is removal heavy, otherwise it’s a bit too defensive to speed up our game plan of taking out our opponents. I am personally more of a fan of spells/abilities that I can use that can protect our commander without interrupting a lethal attack, like a new card I pulled yesterday Flare of Fortitude

Parting Gift

Interesting. They get a fish if you use it as removal otherwise it's a two mana blink effect that buffs the target. The dual role interests me but I'm not sold on it yet

Would you take Swords to Plowshares out for Parting Gust? I wonder if the extra white mana and “nontoken” factor makes a difference.

@gzusvictory

I'm liking the idea of the ungifted flicker as an added "save a creature from removal" mode. Going from 1mv to 2mv isn't that of a big deal as long as that extra mana adds something relevant. I replaced Path to Exile with Get Lost for the more flexible removal.

I doubt the nontoken clause would matter in the long term. Aside from a certain frozen abomination (which at least for me isn't anywhere near a common sight), I can't think of any notable token that would warrant burning a killspell on.

Thoughts on Monumental Henge?

With a plains count of 19, having this enter untapped should turn out realistic. We like card draw in white in any form. With it taking a place of a land slot, it should make adding this card easier. Likely not to whiff since our equipments are all historic. Adds for white rather than colorless. Activates at instant speed.

Leaving up effectively 5 mana for a maybe card draw can seem costly. Does not count itself toward the Emeria count. Our nonbasic lands are pretty solid, so making a cut may still be tough.

NensouHiebara says... #21

@ gzusvictory

I'm not really sold on trying to fit a third card draw land with a non-zero chance of whiffing.

Dawn's Truce

One card as a gift is nothing compared to getting hexproof and Indestructible for us and all our permanents.

July 18, 2024 8:03 p.m.

gzusvictory says... #23

Flare of Fortitude > Dawn's Truce

Flare has an extra fog effect, can cost zero mana, and gives opponents no cards. It will cost you a white non token creature.

Dawn does cost 2 less mana, but never zero. No extra fog effect, gives an opponent a card, and can give the player hexproof. Hexproof feels less relevant compared to life total not changing.
