Mana Confluence would be better. You NEVER want a tapland in modern TrueGamerWoo unless that tapland is a powerful utility land or manland.

You are good against aggro matches. Athreos, God of Passage allows you to have massive amounts of fuel to outlast your opponent. Though you lack decent turn one plays. I would actually say either Path to Exile main or Lightning Bolt main. Then, Spark Elemental .

Midrange is a pretty decent match up AS LONG AS you get Immortal Servitude or Hell's Thunder out with Athreos, God of Passage . Otherwise the opponent will use their Tarmogoyf s and other really powerful creatures to block the hell out of your guys, and utilize their removal against you. (You have a particular weakness against Death's Shadow builds because you know, A) 10/10 swinging at you because you have no blockers, and B) Phyrexian Unlife makes the deck last just that much longer to kill you).

Combo is a 2/3 chance against you. If the game winning combo is creature based, you can use your removal against them to stop them from getting anywhere. Any other forms of combo destroys you. Now on the other hand, the different forms of combo make the 2/3 fraction. Combo control obliterates this deck. You just aren't fast enough and don't have enough removal to stop them. Power combo destroys this deck as well, I'm talking things like Affinity, tron and my Kor Legions deck. The creatures are just too strong for you to even get any damage through them. Regular combo however, doesn't have much in the lines of defense and just tries to get out its combo as fast as possible, you have a chance against them because of your removal and powerful creatures.

This is the breakdown style for your deck, hope this helps.

Yeah, this breakdown is quite helpful! As I'm only fairly familiar with the world of Modern, clearly I haven't prepared for all of these possible scenarios! I thank you for helping analyze the current deck standpoint, so seeing its current weaknesses, what do you think would help bolster its performance against more control-esque decks? Obviously a more versatile sideboard would be necessary, but are there any changes you would see as completely necessary in order to give this deck the upper hand in these matches? Sorry for bouncing this back to you so much, but I simply don't have the Modern knowledge in order to budget and prepare for all of these possibilities.

Immortal Servitude should go into the sideboard as it is only relevant against control due to how much it costs in total cost and coloured cost. I actually think Liliana of the Veil would do glorious wonders in here. It would make those dead copies of Athreos, God of Passage and Idyllic Tutor worth using and you could port Eidolon of the Great Revel into the side against storm, affinity and other fast aggro decks.

Please note that you are taking massive amounts of damage from your fetching a shock every single turn. I think it would be beneficial if you ran some Mana Confluence s in there. After all that, look at the decks I posted, those will help.

I really like this concept, i run Atheros and heliod constellation with Bow of Nylea to kill of my opponents big creatures with tiny tokes that heliod produces but its nice when heliod doesnt come out and i need to swing with the nyx fleece ram of underworld coinsmith and most of the time i just keep getting my creatures back and gaining more life. but i really like the shock idea +1 and deck watch more me on this one

Just wanted to answer a question I saw posted above.

Athreos, God of Passage will NOT trigger from your cards that have been unearthed. The same applies to your creatures that are killed with Anger of the Gods or removed by cards like Banishing Light or Utter End , and all for the same reason. In order for the Athreos's ability to trigger, the creature must die, and Athreos's ability will trigger while that creature exists in the graveyard. If that card has been exiled in place of going into the graveyard, the ability cannot trigger. This will also happen if an opponent uses something like Tormod's Crypt in response to Athreos's ability triggering, exiling the creature that died.

That being said, I LOVE this deck idea! It looks like it is really weak to aggro creatures, as you will be left with no blockers each turn, and Athreos will never become a creature himself. Because of that, I would consider adding some form of control. Forgive me as I am a standard player so I'm not certain if something like Deflecting Palm exists in a better card for modern, but I think something like that would really help you punish your opponent, even when you've gone all out the turn before. Lightning Helix is great, but can't remove the bigger threats, or the multiple threats.

Honestly in testing, I haven't found aggro to be much of a problem simply because I'm usually faster. That being said, I'll consider Deflecting Palm , but open mana for this deck is often hard to come by, as I want to be putting down threats every turn, and usually I'd be able to take out whatever is attacking with Lightning Helix or Terminate anyway, so buying a turn with Palm just isn't necessary. Thanks for feedback, though!

Aggro isn't a problem, because you will almost always have more fuel than them. I still think Liliana of the Veil would do wonders though, because you can discard all the stuff that becomes useless and control your opponents board much more better, ever heard of the Lili hole?

If you're gonna run 4x Idyllic Tutor why not get 4x Athreos, God of Passage instead and drop one of the Tutors? Tutor is only there to grab you Athreos and it's a dead card in your hand if you already have more than one on the field. Might as well make the dead card another Athreos instead of a Tutor.

The tutor you can also fetch the eidolon Of the great revel though

@com572, how does this deck do against countermagic? I could see it being really frustrating to try and drop Athreos, God of Passage , only to have it countered to something stupid like Mana Leak .

November 4, 2014 9:23 a.m.

com572 says... #15

shedidthistome While that can be frustrating at times, Athreos isn't completely necessary to win, so I usually just end up overpowering the board with lower-mana creatures that can't all be countered. Also, if I know my opponent is playing with a lot of counters, I'll try to save up some mana before playing any super important creatures in case of cards like Mana Leak .

@com572, thanks! Also, what is the ruling when Athreos, God of Passage is a spell on the stack waiting to resolve? Is it both a creature and an enchantment? Can Spell Pierce counter it for instance? Thanks again.

November 4, 2014 3:59 p.m.

com572 says... #17

Cards like Spell Pierce would be able to counter it, as the devotion-creature effect only applies while Athreos is on the battlefield. While in your deck, your hand, or anything else like the stack, Athreos can be an enchantment or creature.

November 4, 2014 4:06 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #18

Um no, Athreos, God of Passage is always both a creature and an enchantment in every field BUT the battlefield. This counts for the stack to. Since Negate type counterspells say NONcreature, and Athreos IS a creature, it can't be countered by them.

com572 says... #19

Oh haha, sorry thought that card was target creature card, my bad.

November 4, 2014 4:44 p.m.

Nixin72 says... #20

All negative clauses automatically rule out any positive ones. For example Negate couldn't counter and Athreos, God of Passage could because athreos is a creature. The negative rules that out instantly regadless of wether or not you cast him as a creature. Something like Gainsay on the other hand could counter Phenax, God of Deception , because even though he is black as well as blue, he is included in the blue without being discluded from the black. So (if he weren't indestructible) he couldn't be target of a Doom Blade .

I see Faithless Looting and Unburial Rites having good synergy with cards in this deck.

Pitch extra copies of Athreos and surplus lands for better card quality with the looting.

Reanimate creatures to bring back for extra damage w/ Athreos in play (since Unburial Rites is only four mana to flashback it could fit in the curve). It would also serve as a way to dish out more damage and force crazy difficult decisions if you have Athreos in play and a Rites in the bin while swinging with Ball Lightning or another big threat.
