UW control is back! Thanks to the bannings from WOTC earlier this year, control decks suddenly seem viable in Modern again. UW was always my favorite color for running control and I think that it's best suited to be the premier control deck in the format. I'm working on my own version, vaguely based on Ivan Floch's winning 2015 Pro Tour deck, albeit with my own twist. I focus more on removal and disruption and I have an actual wincon in my version. This maybe the sixth or seventh iteration of this deck so rather than post yet another update I decided to rewrite the intro. So without further ado, Slim Jim's UW Control deck.

Mana Base
Show

This is the weakest part of the deck. I would prefer to run 4-6 fetches and a shock or two, but I'm not made out of money so this will have to do. Glacial Fortress is probably the best overall UW dual land in modern that isn't a shock because it plays untapped after Turn 2. Enough said.Port Town plays relatively fast provided I draw a good opening hand, but can get a little rough later in the game. Still, for about $2 a piece (probably less), it's a decent budget land. At the time of writing it's still in Standard so I naturally have a full set. I also run a full set of Ghost Quarter to nuke Urza lands and/or manlands.I originally ran a full set of Faerie Conclave, but tapped was killing me so I dropped it to two. They're more of a backup plan than anything else right now, and aren't much of a kill shot at all. I will replace them with a full set of Celestial Colonnade once I find a buyer for my kidney. jk

Removal

Early game I spend a lot of time managing the board so that I don't get quickly overwhelmed. I run a full set of Path to Exile and two copies of Condemn for spot removal purposes because let's face it, Path is the best removal in Modern and Condemn is a decent copy. Detention Sphere locks down whatever makes it onto the board that Path can't deal with, mostly including Planeswalkers, and right now I run three. A full set of Supreme Verdict kills everything and I rely on that pretty heavily. Narset Transcendent can even rebound it for extra value, like lots of undying or persist (here's looking at you, Kitchen Finks). I also run a full set of Azorius Charm, which is a decent version of Condemn, but also draws a card if I need it.

Card Advantage

I love Serum Visions, a nice little cantrip that fixes up to two turns, so I run a full set because of all the digging I have to do for Supreme Verdict. The aforementioned card:Azrius Charm draws a card if needed, but the real source of card advantage comes form Sphinx's Revelation. I mainly use this one to draw the game out and hopefully draw into my wincon. At the very least it keeps me alive and gives me enough answers to dig for the endgame.

Utility and WinCon

Speaking of Ivan, I have a single copy of Elixir of Immortality. I try chaining it to Sphinx's Revelation when I can and if that doesn't make the opponent scoop, then the Elspeth, Sun's Champion hopefully will. Jace, Architect of Thought blunts enemy assaults (see what I did there?), gives me some card advantage, and also serves as an alternate wincon if needed. Finally, I have four copies of Spreading Seas for those pesky manlands and TRON matchups.I also run three Mana Leak and two Logic Knot to delay my opponent's board development. These cards are awesome when I play them on curve, but not so much when I don't. Still, there isn't much to replace them with unless I want to get really specific. I also run a single copy of Cryptic Command because I cannot afford more right now. I'll get 1-2 more after donating some plasma.

Sideboard
Show

In a meta full of Liliana of the Veil, Celestial Purge is a must, so I board three. I also have two more Sphinx's Revelation because why not? and two copies of Blessed Alliance. Extra counter magic fills the board out, 2x Spell Snare (personal favorite), 2x Negate, and 3x Spell Pierce.
