Drafting White-Black in Eternal Masters

In the last three Eternal Masters drafts I have done, I have drafted a White-Black value/control deck and gone 3-0 each time. The reasons for this, I believe, are two-fold:

  • White-Black is an under drafted archetype.
  • Most of the important pieces are at common and can be picked up easily throughout the draft.

The typical version of this deck wins by controlling the board while gaining value and card advantage from pretty much every card. At some point you turn a corner and start going on the offensive. Some versions can be extremely grindy whereas others are able to beat down earlier. Most of the creatures have ETB effects which you can repeatedly abuse through blink or graveyard recursion.

Commons

Here's a list of the commons that go into the deck in roughly pick order:

  • Aven Riftwatcher - This, I believe, is the linchpin of the deck. It does everything you want: gains 4 life, blocks most 2- and 3-drops, and attacks in the air. I would want at least two in my deck and regularly I've had three.
  • Coalition Honor Guard - Second best card for the deck. It blanks pretty much all damage-based removal and auras. Plus it's a great blocker. I want 1-3 in my deck.
  • Phyrexian Rager - Draws you card and blocks or trades for most early creatures. I want 1-2 copies.
  • Eyeblight's Ending - Good removal. I'd want 1-2 copies.
  • Urborg Uprising - A three-for-one that allows more value from your Riftwatchers and Ragers. I usually only want 1 copy in my deck, but with some cheap creatures (e.g. Wall of Omens) I'd consider 2 copies.
  • Gravedigger - Similar to Uprising, but gives you a useful body immediately. Again 1 or 2 of this effect is fine.
  • Night's Whisper - Nice early play to keep lands and spells flowing. 1-2 copies.
  • Tragic Slip - You can often engineer a situation where this is just plain removal. You can chump block with a creature you want to recur and then remove the threat, or you can do it in your turn when a Riftwatcher has been sacrificed. I usually only want one of these in the main board, but an extra in the side board can be a lifesaver.
  • Whitemane Lion - Very versatile as it can protect from removal and recur ETB effects. I want at least 1 copy but probably no more than 2.
  • Wakedancer - Regularly this gives you two bodies. I don't miss it if there's no copies.
  • Pacifism - It's hard to pick these up late in the draft and they're not essential, but if I do get one, I run it.
  • Second Thoughts - A two-for-one is great but a bit expensive to leave mana open unless you have nothing to do.
  • Twisted Abomination - Acts as fixing early on and a win condition later.
  • Benevolent Bodyguard - Usually a side board card for removal-heavy matchups, but sometimes I'll run 1 copy in the main.
  • Monk Idealist - Useful if you have more aura-heavy build with Pacifism and/or Faith's Fetters.
  • Wake of Vultures - Mostly filler. I usually don't want any of these.
  • Scoured Barrens et al - Usually a higher pick than some of the other commons if you already have most of the pieces you need. Incidental life gain is actually quite important for this deck.

Uncommons

These are uncommons to look out for (again roughly in pick order):

Rares

Most of the on-colour rares are excellent (except Sinkhole). There's one White-Black rare, Vindicate, which I would first-pick (and have). Obviously it's splashable if you are in Wx or Bx, but I believe you can often force WB.

Splashable Rares

The only off-colour rares I think are worth splashing are:

  • Brago, King Eternal - While I don't think Brago is that good in White-Blue, he's excellent here. He does everything that you want, getting you so much value it's disgusting.
  • Deathrite Shaman - Not technically off-colour, but having access to green is invaluable.

That's it - hope you found this guide useful.
