This deck aims to win by getting out
Blightsteel Colossus
, making token copies of it and swinging at your opponents for infect damage. We have a backup plan as well of course.
We have a couple of strategies to do this including infinite mana combos, tutoring and in some way cheating out
Blightsteel Colossus
.
Infinite Mana (and other tricks):
There are two combos here; one of which needs your commander.
Option 1:
Emry, Lurker of the Loch
,
Lotus Petal
& either
Chakram Retriever
or mirram spy - Sacrifice
Lotus Petal
for 1 mana of any colour (usually ), bring it back with
Emry, Lurker of the Loch
's ability as it costs nothing, and having either
Chakram Retriever
or mirram spy to untap
Emry, Lurker of the Loch
. Then just repeat!
Option 2:
Grand Architect
&
Pili-Pala
- Using
Grand Architect
's ability to make
Pili-Pala
a blue creature and the second ability to tap
Pili-Pala
for mana, use this mana to activate
Pili-Pala
's untap ability which gives you 1 mana of any colour (again, usually ). Once again, repeat!
Once we have infinite mana we can use cards like
Aether Spellbomb
to give us infinite card draw; allowing us to find the cards we need.
But we can also use it's bounce ability to send our opponents threats back to their hands.
Springjaw Trap
's flash means that with infinite mana available we can use this as a sudo-boardwipe; pinging our opponents creatures until the table is clear.
Worse for our opponents is
Universal Solvent
that does the same thing but allows us to target players directly.
Cheating out Ol' Blighty:
Blightsteel Colossus
is a powerful card. However, with great power comes great... cost! We have a number of ways to get
Blightsteel Colossus
out on the battle field for less than the 12 mana it costs. If you find you have
Blightsteel Colossus
in your hand then
Thran Temporal Gateway
is a cheap way to get it on the field.
Kuldotha Forgemaster
just needs 2 more artifacts on the field for you to go bring out
Blightsteel Colossus
although you have to wait a turn to use his ability. kuldrotha forgemaster can also be used twice if you have 5 other artifacts either mirram spy or
Chakram Retriever
on the field.
Planar Bridge
is my preferred method as it can be activated straight away if you have the mana.
Treasure Mage
can also go find
Blightsteel Colossus
but I prefer to use the mage to find
Planar Bridge
as I then have the ability to get any number of artifact pieces for my board.
Whir of Invention
doesn't help with cheating out
Blightsteel Colossus
but can help get to pieces like
Planar Bridge
and kuldrotha forgemaster easier, or even the artifacts needed for the infinite mana combos.
Fabricate
is another artifact tutoring card but id nearly always use this to get
Planar Bridge
unless I already had
Thran Temporal Gateway
out.
What's better than 1 Blighty? That's right 2 or 3 or never ending
Blightsteel Colossus
(with haste!):
Another downside to
Blightsteel Colossus
is that you have to wait a turn to use it and it can only attack one player at a time. Don't worry, we have an answer to this this issue.
Firstly we can use cards like
Mirror Image
and
Phyrexian Metamorph
to give ourselves another
Blightsteel Colossus
on the field.
Masterful Replication
can also give use a number of
Blightsteel Colossus
to swing away with as long as we have artifacts on the board.
Secondly we can use
Cogwork Assembler
to make us copies of
Blightsteel Colossus
with haste so we can swing in straight away. If we have one of the infinite mana combos online we can make an unlimited amount of hasted blightsteels colossus to catch our opponents off-guard.
Golem Artisan
is another way we can give our
Blightsteel Colossus
and any copies made with
Phyrexian Metamorph
or
Mirror Image
haste to start the infect damage train early.
Our final piece of haste enabling comes with
Chariot of Victory
although this can only give us a shot at a single target this is useful for taking out the biggest threat at the table (besides ourselves of course).
Our final nice surprise comes in the form of two ways to get an extra turn. This means that we can get
Blightsteel Colossus
out and swing without having to wait a full table rotation.
Karn's Temporal Sundering
is one option but runs the risk of being countered.
Magosi, the Waterveil
however is our surprise if we get it early in the game. Depending on your local meta sacrificing one of our earlier turns won't put us that far behind, especially thanks to the infinite mana combos we have access to. Being able to take that extra turn later in the game has a huge benefit for us once we get
Blightsteel Colossus
out so that we can swing before anyone has had a turn to deal with it.
Back up plans:
We have multiple ways to get to our infect win con but we might come across issues along the way and sometimes infect just might not work for us. We have our sudo-boardwipe mentioned above with
Springjaw Trap
but unlike
Universal Solvent
this doesn't take our opponents out. To keep us "in the game" we have a couple of back-up creatures that are going to do the work for us:
Phyrexian Triniform
&
Metalwork Colossus
give us another big creature we can swing with and make copies using
Mirror Image
&
Phyrexian Metamorph
or even
Cogwork Assembler
to get damage through.
Finally, protection:
We don't always know what our opponents have up their sleeve so we need to be prepared. We have a handful of counterspell cards to take care of those pesky problems but a better way is to be untouchable.
Padeem, Consul of Innovation
works perfectly for us as the majority of our key pieces are artifacts.
We are also packing
Mindslaver
which thanks to
Emry, Lurker of the Loch
is not just a single use card. With multiple ways to tutor this card up and our infinite mana combos we can take over an entire table rotation with ease.
Key to the City
can allow us to get one
Blightsteel Colossus
through unblocked and
Skyshaper
can be used again and again thanks to
Emry, Lurker of the Loch
to give
Blightsteel Colossus
and any copies flying to get them over the top.
