"We all hide a little madness behind our sophistication, do we not?" -Anje Falkenrath

This is a merciless rage precon upgrade

The purpose of this deck is two-fold.

1) To act as a platform for which I can better learn deckbuilding principles, and the EDH format in general.

2)

This deck revolves around using Anje Falkenrath and the Madness mechanic to dig for key pieces of your deck, and then using card effects, and attackers, to whittle away at your opponents life totals.

Turns -

When considering a mulligan, I tend to ask myself if I can play 3 turns of EDH were I not allowed to draw any cards. This does not necessarily have to be an ideal 3 turns, with a turn 1 Sol Ring, etc., but more along the lines of "would I be able to summon Anje Falkenrath, so I can get this deck going?". An ideal hand has:

  • 3-4 Lands

  • 1-2 pieces of ramp

  • 1-2 low cost spells or creatures

  • 1-2 cards with Madness

In your first 3 turns, your priority is casting Anje Falkenrath. 2 CMC Mana rocks do not tend to help you speed this up, because Anje Falkenrath is a 3 CMC commander. Instead, the quintessential commander staple, Sol Ring, and Dark Ritual can occasionally allow you to drop Anje Falkenrath on turn 2. This does not mean you should not cast 2 CMC Mana rocks however, as they are still good means of mana-fixing and artifact ramping. Just be aware of what other options you may have in your opening hand.

The earlier you are able to put the card Squee, Goblin Nabob into your hand, the more value he has as an abusable discard target. Putting him back into your hand at your upkeep each turn can also help negate the heavy card attrition of this deck. If you are able to open with him, it is ideal. Additionally, if you open with a tutor, he is also an ideal target within your first 3 turns. However, after turn 3 or 4, your focus should shift elsewhere.

Turns -

With Anje Falkenrath out on the field, our focus shifts.

Priority 1: Digging for key pieces

Priority 2: Ramping

Priority 3: Fill the graves

  • While digging, we will fill our graveyard with useful pieces for later.

  • Try to discard cards like Anger, and Cut / Ribbons into our graveyard in the process.

  • Anger will give all our creatures hast

  • Cut / Ribbons will sit in our graveyard and act as a potential win-con for us to pull out as a surprise later.

Turns -

Priority 1: Board State

  • Casting our key board pieces, if we have not already

Priority 2: Reanimation

  • Establishing a reliable means of reanimation

Turns +

If the game gets to turn 10, your priority becomes closing out the game as quickly as possible. While this deck has some strong creatures capable of doing some serious damage, you cannot compete against green decks in war of attrition. At this point in time, your enemies will likely have much lower life totals. However, they will also likely also have well established board states. If you have not yet been able to burn out your enemies with your board state, you should have a full graveyard, a means of reanimation, and a healthy manabase. It's time to put them to work.

Dig, or tutor, for cards such as Psychosis Crawler, Glint-Horn Buccaneer, Faith of the Devoted, Syr Konrad, the Grim, Curse of Fool's Wisdom, and Ob Nixilis Reignited (Using his ultimate, if able)

Establish a board state with one or more of these cards in play

Using Anje Falkenrath to discard as many cards with Madness as possible, or using cards such as Anje's Ravager, Faithless Looting, Magus of the Wheel, or Sire Of Insanity to steadily begin burning away your opponent's lifepoints.

Synergies:

1) Dig, or tutor, for creatures such as Shadowgrange Archfiend, Necrogoyf, Archfiend of Spite, Overseer of the Damned, Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion, and Artisan of Kozilek

2) Cast Creatures

3) Attack

Bonus:

Key to the City can help your attackers get through, while acting as a discard outlet. In a pinch, it can also act as card draw.

Voldaren Pariah  , Stromkirk Occultist, Bloodhall Priest, Nightshade Assassin, Chainer, Nightmare Adept, and Anje's Ravager are all decent early-mid game attackers that can help contribute to the engine

Malevolent Whispers can help by turning an opponent's obstacle into an attacker for you

Discard madness cards and creatures, filling your graveyard while searching for Grimoire of the Dead

Cast Grimoire of the Dead, and spend 3 turns filling it with study counters

Sacrifice Grimoire of the Dead, and reanimate all creature in all graveyards onto the field under your control

Bonus: Archfiend of Ifnir on the field can help fill opponents graveyards while you dig for Grimoire of the Dead. Magus of the Wheel can also help fill graveyards while disrupting opponent's gameplans.

Approximate Power Level:

Uninterrupted, the deck can create a strong board state around turn 8-10. However, it requires Anje on the field to get the engine going, and thus is weak to disruption. One of the big strengths of this deck is that it has a tendency to appear unthreatening until it's too late for the opponents to shut it down, so playing politics can often be advantageous in a well balanced pod.

In November 2019 I purchased my first MTG Deck, a Merciless Rage EDH Precon. I had previously played kitchen table magic with some friends in HS, playing decks like my friend's Meren of Clan Nel Toth (Which later was gifted to me, very generously). However, in Uni, I had found a small group of friends and brothers who played MTG and now had no deck of my own. This deck was my first experience with deckbuilding and tuning, and has over the years provided me with a fantastic experience learning how to truly build an EDH deck. While my budget has always constrained what I can do with the deck, or my other decks, this was the deck that taught me how to truly play (and build) MTG.

This decklist is my merciless rage upgrade as it currently stands in my physical deck. This started out as my one and only deck, before I ended up with a small collection from friends. The early upgrades were largely decided upon via advice from other players or from online sources. While the early philosophy was basically "expensive = betterer", over the years I've figured out how to actually start building with synergy and find effective upgrades for less money. This has slowly translated into my other decks, and while I still have a lot to learn, this deck has taught me a great deal.
