Creature (4)

This deck attempts to make use of the new Dinosaur type as well as the "Enraged" ability. This seems to be the most unique aspect of dinosaurs, and the only reason they could be viable at the moment. Due to their high cost, I've tried to go with a ramping-that-is-also-kinda-midrange deck that doesn't really seek to control early or mid game, so much as having creature presence strong enough to keep the opponent from wanting to attack. Late game becomes a slaughter should the stars align.

The basic goals of this deck are to:

  1. Mana ramp using mana reduction permanents and land drop creatures.
  2. Ramp in card advantage using draw abilities.
  3. Ramp in creatures by using a combo of 1 and 2.
  4. Finish the game using trample and either lots of dinosaurs or just a large dinosaur (or two).

It seems a bit slow to start, but once it ramps, I can have every permanent on the field or graveyard by turn 15 (in play testing).

Basic Strategy

  • Otepec Huntmaster, Pillar of Origins 1 or even 2 can hopefully be placed out by turn 3, allowing you to ramp faster.
  • Raptor Hatchling * serves as an early chump blocker into a 3/3 blocker (assuming it was damaged) until then.
  • Crash Through and Rile serve as a way to deal lethal end game, as well as ways to cycle through your deck should you need to early game.
  • Lifecrafter's Bestiary serves to cycle through your deck faster with scry and draw. Combined with the mana reduction from OH and Mana from PoO can reduce the cost of a card draw.
  • Ripjaw raptor and Ranging Raptors serve both as blockers that the enemy won't want to attack, as well as ramping. Obvious weaknesses are infect and flying. Use Rile to gain a double draw or a draw and land drop for .
  • Raging Swordtooth * ties a lot of the deck together. He hopefully only cost 3 to 4 by turn 5 or 6, and can trigger the enraged ability of all 3 raptors. This way you may suddenly have a 3/3 with trample, more lands on the field, or more cards in hand. Combined with Lifecrafter's Bestiary, you may even be able to draw an extra card.
  • Gishath, Sun's Avatar can be paid with Drover of the Mighty .
  • If you can get a good setup, you should be drawing multiple cards and laying one or two creatures per turn.

*These cards don't seem to link yet. Refer to the deck list above.

Criticism Welcome

While I like the premise, it still feels like it needs some balance. Feel free to make suggestions. I think staying away from tri-color is for the better, as none of the White dinosaurs have a huge impact, and Drover of the Mighty can cover the Gishath, Sun's Avatar cost. Keep in mind there just aren't a ton of dinosaurs as of now.
