Welcome to Entering the Singularity!

The goal of this deck is to, on a budget, win via infinite combo as consistently as possible and almost exclusively that way! Let's check out the deck!

Reading the Decklist

We chose to use Kess, Dissident Mage as the commander for two primary reasons:
  • She allows us some consistency since she can cast A instant or sorcery from the graveyard on our turn.

  • She gives us as our colors! gives us the best combo cards and gives us some graveyard tricks which we can utilize with Kess!

It is for these reasons that we use Kess as the commander. There are reasons, however, to use a straight 5 color commander instead. We would have access to all cards, significantly more ramp, and we wouldn't immediately come off as a combo player. That being said, we need the consistency since we aren't playing many tutors due to our budget, so Kess is the best.

Combos and Win Conditions

Let's start with the most basic combos and work our way up to the more complex:

This combo is relatively simple. Play Omniscience . Play Enter the Infinite . Play Jace, Wielder of Mysteries . +1 Jace and win! Make sure that, if you are going to do this, you can stop Omniscience or Enter the Infinite from being countered or stopped. This combo can be easy to disrupt and leave you in a dangerous spot (no library). If something happens to Jace (in the graveyard or exile or something), you can always play Laboratory Maniac and a draw spell.
As many players know, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker is an extraordinarily powerful card. Our goal with him is to copy something which will untap Kiki which allows us to go infinite assuming no interaction. In this deck, we have a few creatures which will do that for us:
  1. Deceiver Exarch

  2. Pestermite

  3. Zealous Conscripts (you can target a creature you control)

  4. Breaching Hippocamp

Each of these allows us to untap Jiki to create an infinite number of hastey creatures to swing in with.

Similarly, we can do the exact same combo with Splinter Twin IF the creature has haste or isn't suffering from summoning sickness. This means flashing in Breaching Hippocamp , Pestermite , or Deceiver Exarch .

If you're playing against a STAX player or just someone who has Propaganda or a similar effect out, then we can use Goblin Bombardment to kill them with non-combat damage!

This combo is almost certainly the most powerful but can also require the most work to achieve. Let's start with how to create your SINGULARITY:

First, we need . We have 2 main ways of doing this:

  1. Peregrine Drake + Deadeye Navigator . The bread and butter way of getting .

  2. Reiterate + Mana Geyser . To do this, you cast Mana Geyser , then you cast Reiterate with buyback. Reiterate will resolve first on the stack and then go back to your hand. Then, you have the opportunity to respond again to your own spell by casting Reiterate . You can do this as many times as you want to create . Do note, however, that your opponents need to have a total of at least tapped lands to go infinite and a total of to start this combo. A little janky, but it works!

  3. Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal + any mana rocks which will net us at least .

With these, we now have the power to jump start the SINGULARITY. From here, we have a number of ways of killing everyone:

If we are using the isochron combo and can produce infinite , then we can also use Jace's Archivist (if it isn't suffering from summoning sickness) to draw our entire deck and win.

OR

We can go another route and pull our opponents into the SINGULARITY as we create it. Using the latter 2 combos, we can end the game much quicker simply from repeated casts. When you activate Isochron Scepter and when you use Reiterate , you increase the number of spells cast that turn by . Not only that, but with the combos listed, we will actually be doing it an number of times. Further, since we don't need the mana that we create from the combos, we only need from mana rocks to untap with Isochron Scepter and only need of our opponents lands to be tapped with Mana Geyser . With these infinite casts, we have a few ways to close the game out:

  1. Aetherflux Reservoir . Gain infinite life and pay symbol:50 a bunch of times to kill everyone.

  2. Aria of Flame . Each spell cast will increase the verse counters and deal damage to someone. Use this to your advantage and don't miss the trigger!

  3. Tendrils of Agony . Ah, a classic storm card. I originally was going to put Grapeshot , but I liked this better as it also gained us life. Not only that, but each of the copies would have to be countered in order to stop it OR the stack would have to be exiled (there are a few cards which do this). Powerful win!

With each of these combos, we can easily win the game!

Piloting the Deck

Basically, we want to just dig through our deck to find our combos and don't usually mind if things go in the graveyard since we can recur them from there. Because of this, we will be digging aggressively and actually rarely want combo pieces in our hand. Here is what we will use to dig or tutor:

Each of these cards will dig us a little deeper while also providing some other value such as Narset, Parter of Veils making Windfall a really powerful tool or Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur baiting out removal or counterspells.

We have quite a few tools for recursion besides Kess, Dissident Mage .

This isn't much, but we can even cast these recursion spells using Kess herself which make them that much better! Keep in mind though, that you can only cast one instant or sorcery on your turn with Kess, so be careful and don't cheat yourself out of a win!

Also, just in case we need a spell in hand, we have Archaeomancer to grab it back!

The rest of the deck is designed to stop others from accomplishing their goals whether that be through removal or counterspells. I don't really feel the need to list what in the deck fits in this category as it is basically everything that hasn't already been listed. If someone is going off but has to pass the turn cycle and you are confident that you can win before them with what you have available, save your counters and answers for your own combo. That is the only reason to not use your removal or counters.

I hope everyone likes the deck and has fun with it! It's a lot more competitive while also being very inexpensive, so it should be easier for casual or budget players to pick up if they are in a playgroup that has a more powerful meta!

Lastly, I want to say that I am always open to suggestions and am happy to receive them! Feel free to leave a comment if you know any cards which would be good additions to the deck!

Updates Add

After a lot of playtesting, I decided to add more digging. Too often, we get clogged up with combo pieces and nothing worth actually drawing, or just mediocre cards in general which didn't feel helpful. Because of this:

Out:

  • Swiftfoot Boots & Lightning Greaves. As much as we want protection for our creatures, we can usually provide that in the form of counter spells which are generally better than both of these. Most of the time, we aren't playing many creatures that we need out for multiple turns anyways.

  • Comet Storm. Just felt weak. We have lots of ways to win with infinite mana. We don't mind taking one of our outlets out of the deck.

  • Archaeomancer. Although it can return a spell to our hand, Kess can usually do that for us reliably.

In:

  • Notion Thief. Makes our Windfall effects that much better! Extra card draw too!

  • Flux. Allows us to filter through our hand to look for combo pieces better.

  • Preordain. Just good old fashioned value. Easy addition.

  • Whispering Madness. Another windfall! This card is also nice in that there's always the chance that we can do it another time!
