For your -1/-1 counter idea, I would strongly suggest wither cards. Since all your creatures get +1 counters, you could safely run Harbinger of Night and if you want to make sure you don't get the -1 counters, play Melira, Sylvok Outcast. That way with Midnight Banshee, Harbinger of Night, Atraxa, Praetors' Voice or any other proliferate cards are out, that's 3 to 4 -1/-1 counters a turn on each creature which is incredibly devastating to any creature deck that isnt prepared for counters. Might also want to add Grave Betrayal for an extra Necroskitter.

Yeah Zimmers_0, I will add all but Melira, Sylvok Outcast, as I'm going to be proliferating +1/+1 counters enough to keep all of my creatures alive anyways I think.

Although I'm wanting to find a place for possibly Demon of Dark Schemes, Aetherworks Marvel, Vulturous Zombie, and Meren of Clan Nel Toth, although I'm not sure what to take out, have any ideas?

Also I'm worried I don't have enough means to put +1+1 counters on my creatures, so should I possibly add something more like Bloodspore Thrinax, or Archangel of Thune? I don't know the name at the moment, but there's the Golgari parter commander in the breed lethality deck that will help with gaining lots of life for Archangel of Thune.

Anyways thanks for the earlier suggestions as well as the upvote.

Actually I have decided to change up the deck a fair bit, all the -1/-1 counter related cards except Contagion Engine have been removed. I might try those things in another version of the deck at a later time.

yeah -1/-1's didnt work for me either. Cost to much.

From your Maybeboard, I think many of the cards are not worth running, unless your meta is really casual or it's a pet card and you just really want to play it regardless. For me, the standouts worth running would be:

  • Ajani Steadfast
  • Cascading Cataracts
  • Jace, Architect of Thought
  • Jace, the Mind Sculptor
  • Lighthouse Chronologist
  • Mana Crypt
  • Nissa, Voice of Zendikar
  • Pact of Negation
  • Phyrexian Metamorph
  • Spike Weaver
  • Sylvan Library
  • Vampiric Tutor
  • Vindicate
  • Viral Drake

Honorable Mention to Call the Gatewatch. I too want to try that one out.

And of course all the fetches and filter lands can replace ETBT Wedge/Shard lands and maybe some basics or whatever as you pick them up (I'm assuming that's why they're not in here already).

WOW really tappedout? I literally spent the last 10 minutes (maybe a bit more?) writing out a reply and I go to preview it before submitting and i'm told "tappedout is down, maybe ornithopters are buzzing on our facebook page." That is such an annoyance as I lost my entire response.

I was basically saying that I appreciate these suggestions to narrow down my list of considerations + the upvote too, that my meta is not overly competitive so there's been a couple cards I always liked using i.e Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger among others, and I only get to play at my lgs 1-2 a month. I happen to be spending money on my modern/standard decks currently so I have little left over to put towards commander currently but I do hope once my college exams are over I should be working again over the summer and I should be able to more easily acquire some of this stuff. Besides the Nissa I do not own any of those other suggestions but I will see about acquiring most if not all of them.

That's just a quick summary anyways. But yeah I will make some changes with those cards to this soon and then see about helping you with your own version when I have more time if you haven't already narrowed it down yourself.

Looks good over-all, I run an Atraxa deck myself and love the huge amount of permutations of her there can be. Looks very tightly put together.

That said, I'm shocked at not seeing a Magistrate's Scepter anywhere, not even in your side or maybeboard.

Also, a shocking commander-damage kill card to draw on someone when playing Atraxa is Hatred, to be played immediately after someone lets Atraxa past their blockers ('cause your only attacking because you have vigilance, right? And don't wanna deal with that deathtouch). Then boom, drop 17 life to turn her into a 21/21, and instant 21 commander damage for the kill. Oh, and with Atraxa's lifelink you get all the life you lost back, plus her normal 4.

Hey thanks for the suggestions Xion16.

Originally when I first started playing commander back at around Battle for Zendikar, my first commander deck that I had started was one for Vorel of the Hull Clade. Originally there I was going to play that very card as with Vorel it is so much better. However then along came Commander 2016 with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice and I knew I wanted to instead build that type of deck and so my vorel deck was token apart before I had finished it.

Since Atraxa is my commander and not Vorel any longer, it will be more difficult to have both Vorel and Magistrate's Scepter out at the same time I feel. Without vorel it is a lot slower to simply proliferate counters on this and without the ability to double it oftentimes its going not be as effective considering it removes 3 counters as well. I feel like As Foretold or Oracle's Vault are likely better choices for this deck. I like the card and all but I don't think it works too well in here because most turns i'm not going to have the mana in the early game to put counters on this thing regularly. However I will add it to my maybeboard if I ever do decide its worth using if I was to include more tutors or something is to come along in a new set that might be of use with it.

As for Hatred I really like that idea actually, and I'm sure it would work rather well in my meta. As most people either can't do anything about Ataxa with flying at first early on due to no available blockers / not having removal, or at times will just not block because of the deathtouch. So I think this will be a fun little surprise to try out maybe once I get a copy of this card.

If you happen to have any other suggestions for the deck feel free to share them as I don't get to play commander all to often usually at the moment even though I love the format, and the deck in actual cards is not quite done yet.

If your running creature/creature token heavy I recommend Odric, Lunarch Marshal to give Atraxa's nice quartet of flying/vigilance/deathtouch/lifelink to every other creature you have during combat. Doesn't seem that's the way this deck is going though.

Experiment Kraj is another fun one to throw into the mix. Lots of combinations possible. Run a Gilder Bairn alongside him with your gyre sage out... and with enough +1/+1 counters on kraj he goes infinitely powerful and can infinitely double counters on any permanent. But like I said... lots of things you can do. Bare minimum throw a +1/+1 counter on Atraxa and now Kraj is proliferating just like she does.

Also i might suggest dropping Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon for Blighted Agent. It will come out faster and hit more often making up for the lower power value. Proliferating the infection and adding some +1/+1 counters to him only gets you to that win faster.

Prismatic Omen is a really good card for you, just saying.

Sorry for the double comment, but Void Stalker is also a blast to help save you from combat, as is Maze of Ith

_Delta_ says... #14

Thanks for the suggestions demonicgrizzly, just have been a little busy with other things.

Prismatic Omen, is a sweet card but I think im going to have to pass on it, because $40 Canadian ($32 US) is rather a lot considering I got a bunch of other decks that im working on right now too, I might consider it later. I also happen to have a 5 color Sliver Overlord edh deck and so I will definitely have a use for one of these though at some point. In terms of color fixing for my decks, right now really I have been prioritizing acquiring all of the fetches/shocks for multiple decks above pretty much everything.

Anyways I probably will see about finding a spot for Maze of Ith, I just wish I could find out already the direction I want this deck to go. Whether it be strictly super friends, strictly +1/+1 synergies, or stay in its current form that is a bit of both.

Void Stalker is a neat card, but I think im more inclined to go with Spike Weaver if I was to include something like this in here first. Although I will keep this one in mind too if I happen to change my mind and want more such effects.

Again, thanks for taking a look at this deck and offering some suggestions!

October 4, 2017 11:44 p.m.

woah i didn't realize Prismatic Omen had gotten so expensive! i picked mine up just a few weeks ago at nowhere near that much. holy crap.

as far as maze goes, it's a really great card for saving yourself/your commander/other creatures from death. def worth considering. it's just a good utility land.

on an unrelated side note - i love sliver overlord, but i like Sliver Hivelord better. that's just me though.

Conqueror's Flail - makes atraxa an 8/8 before any counters. And stops counter spells, and most interaction during your turn.

Mycoloth gets stupid with Cathars' Crusade

Hey thanks for the suggestions pskinn01. My main trouble for this deck currently is in finding space to fit everything I had wanted too in. If you have any other suggestions that you can think of later on I would appreciate more.

I will keep these two in mind for when I next make edits to this deck. I do really like Mycoloth and if I ever up the creature count over some planeswalkers this will be going in. I actually use to have all the praetors in this deck as well but I took them out, however your 'goodstuff' version of Atraxa does tempt me to put them back. I don't currently own this entire thing in paper yet but i'm getting there as I just need 10 more cards, and most recently I had just acquired the Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Teferi, Temporal Archmage, Rhystic Study, Liliana Vess for this deck.

Also thanks for the upvote!

I'd be careful with Deploy the Gatewatch, as it needs 30+ walkers to really work consistently, and relying on Aminatou, the Fateshifter or Sensei's Divining Top for good hits is a big ask for a 6-mana sorcery imho. Primevals' Glorious Rebirth has been doing a better job as a blowout/gamewinning card for me, but then again, that depends on how many walkers usually hit your yard before you either go off or loose the game. It can definitely be a nice surprise against mill strats ^^

I'd also consider cutting Oath of Ajani (which I found to be the most often dead one out of the oaths you're running) and maybe some of the weaker artifact ramp for combo pieces like Tezzeret the Seeker , Garruk Wildspeaker(mostly additional ways to abuse The Chain Veil) or Rings of Brighthearth(works with all planeswalker abilities, also goes infinite with Basalt Monolith).

Vedalken Orrery is worth considering as well, enabling you to play a planeswalker on your opponent's endstep, use it on your turn, and then have mana open to protect it if needed.

_Delta_ says... #19

Hey thanks for the suggestions MillersEdge, I agree on likely cutting Deploy the Gatewatch as I can only see myself using around 22 or so walkers at the maximum here. I don't own an Aminatou, the Fateshifter yet but I do have the Sensei's Divining Top, and what my plan with those is to have a fair bit of top deck manipulation to make use of possibly some miracle cards like Temporal Mastery and Terminus. Additionally I might add a Nexus of Fate to the deck once I acquire one, but that's likely about all I will use for extra turn spells as this deck (the paper version isn't even finished yet) puts a big enough target on me as is lol. Primevals' Glorious Rebirth I have been thinking about, and maybe now on your suggestion I will include that somewhere's once I can figure out what needs to be cut. As for Oath of Ajani you are likely right on this one as you won't ever usually get the full value out of it. I will add however that my current paper decklist for Atraxa is still quite different as it still uses a lot more creatures towards a +1/+1 counters strategy and that is where this Oath of Ajani gets much more use. It's right now more of in-between superfriends and your typical +1/+1 counters build. I'm now leaning more towards entirely superfriends as evidenced by this decklist because I feel any compromise between the two strategies just weakens this deck.

I don't own Tezzeret the Seeker but i'm definitely looking to get one sooner or later for here for sure, and Garruk Wildspeaker I admit I have neglected attention to and so maybe I will add that to a shopping cart eventually. I really should try to make more use out of The Chain Veil and include some combos. Likewise I wish I had a Rings of Brighthearth but they certainly aren't cheap. Although I will keep an eye out for any opportunity to acquire one, and similarly that's why I don't have Vedalken Orrery now here. But tbh I do actually own a Vedalken Orrery that I got when they were much cheaper, but when you own 10 edh decks I don't like swapping cards between them especially when they all have different coloured sleeves to tell them apart. Maybe in this regard my playgroup would be fine with me proxying a few cards that I already happen to own, and so I might include it here also because you're right when it comes to the value of playing a planeswalker on other's turns.

Anyways thanks for all the suggestions as well as the upvote, at some point I will see what I can maybe suggest for your own decklist.

MillersEdge says... #20

Yeah, I gradually build from a creaturebased strategy towards superfriends for budget-reasons and, while both strategies work well with a little of the other, being in the middle just forces you to sacrifice synergy for good standalone cards, which wasn't a lot of fun for me either. Aminatou, the Fateshifter and Sensei's Divining Top have the upside of being great cards on their own, even without miracles (especially if you have the fetches to shuffle the bad stuff away ._.). Aminatou's -1-ability works great with walkers as well.

I'd be happy to hear from you, it's hard to find up-to-date insight on superfriends decks, and some of the cards the archetype CAN run are just too expensive for me to buy just to experiment and find out if I WANT to run them.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions or want a second opinion on anything, I'll be happy to offer my (quite limited) insight.

Good luck and have fun playing!

+1 from me. Such a cool deck, though I wonder why no Sorin Markov ?

Hey Paladin_11111, thanks for stopping by and giving the upvote first of all. As for Sorin Markov , I'm certainly aware of him, I just find there's so many cards that I still would wish to cram into this decklist and i'm not sure what would go for him if I was to buy one. I will definitely keep him mind for this deck and later when I have more free time I will look at doing another update to this deck likely with the release of War of the Spark. I got to say that set has me excited much more than most others as of recently, as I feel it's going to have an overwhelming amount of new cards to consider here.

You wouldn’t lose atraxa really. You’ld just lose her as the commander. Plus with all the new ways to proliferate from the new set, including the land, even if you didn’t have her in the deck you still have plenty of other proliferate options. Believe me, I’m strongly considering switching my walker deck to 5 colors as well because of the new set as well lol.

I'd maybe consider running the new Niv Mizzit as the commander. Could be really good if you throw in some blink shanagans
