Heya there,
looking for feedback on the Esper Control deck I'm working on.
It is modeled somewhat on the winning Grixis control deck at the Hawaii pro-tour, with one of the end game bombs being Torrential Gearhulk recurring decisive counter-magic such as Void Shatter, Negate or
Summary Dismissal
. Another part of the end game is Noxious Gearhulk, which is mainly in the deck to remove bigger creatures opponents may run (including opposing Gearhulks) and turning the tide.
The deck runs a 4 different planeswalkers: Dovin Baan, Jace, Unraveler of Secrets, Ob Nixilis Reignited and Sorin, Grim Nemesis. Baan is in the main deck as a stabiliser against most decks, as I do expect to be behind in life total and, in some cases, hand size by turn 4 when he drops. Jace is in the deck as card draw and pseudo-removal, same as Ob Nixilis, although his removal is more powerful. Sorin gets into the deck as another stabiliser with his -X, but his +1 is effectively card draw with bonus damaged attached to it, and for that he is useful in the late game.
There is only one board wipe in the deck, and that is Flaying Tendrils as a 3 of. The reason this card is in the deck is that it kills most small creatures which opponents will crew vehicles with, and can be recurred using
Torential Gearhulk
.
Single target removal includes Grasp of Darkness and Anguished Unmaking, the latter of which will be key to staving off big single permanent threats. Earlier threats can be temporarily removed by Spell Queller, or more permanently removed by
Immolating Glare
(particularly harsh on any Smuggler's Copter coming my way).
Tech-in choices include Harsh Scrutiny and Transgress the Mind, to use against creature or Aetherworks Marvel strategies, as well as Fragmentize and Ceremonious Rejection to remove/counter any cheap artifact being played in the early game.
All this, coupled with card draw through Glimmer of Genius and Anticipate allow for a very flexible early game with a strong mid to late-game punch in the form of Gearhulks and Planeswalkers.
I'm looking for feedback on this before ordering the cards I'm missing (namely one of each Gearhulk). Does this sound like a functional deck enough to go to FNM with ? Should I seek to get more board clears for example ?
Cheers,ff124.
