Boring Backstory, feel free to skip. Or don't. It's up to you. I've been drawn to Dimir colors since I started Magic. I enjoy doing stuff that's a little annoying, {U} and {B} allow me to be annoying, it's a perfect match. The ultimate backstory is that I originally started playing Magic through MTG Arena several years ago, and got a collection of Dimir cards at some point, including Etrata, the Silencer. Among others, it's a card that I fell in love with pretty quickly and started looking for other ways to utilize it more efficiently.

Fast forward a couple years and I have a group of IRL friends who play Magic. They convince me to get back into it, specifically playing Commander. I do a little bit of research into the format and find out I can make a deck with Etrata. So the next step, because I'm still new at the game, is to do all the research I can until I figure out what sounds good. I check out most of the Etrata decks I can find quickly on the Internet, and settle on Etrata's Mirrior Box. I've spent a fair bit of time with this deck now, and I think I've reached a point where I know the deck and the game well enough to start modifying it a little bit.

Out With the Old, In With the New - Modifications Show

The main thing I wanted to do more of is help access my wincon. I started by wanting more ways to bounce Etrata. In comes Displace. The next part was cloning Etrata. I achieved this by adding a new card from Phyrexia: All Will Be One, Blade of Shared Souls. There are not many creatures in this deck, so it can sometimes be a better idea to just play removal cards in response to attacks from your opponents instead of blocking and potentially killing your precious creatures, or maybe you just want to stop them from doing something. In comes Disallow to help out, because you can never have enough counterspells.

The Nitty Gritty, or How The Deck Works. Show

The deck works on the usual Etrata combo. Clone her a bunch, use tokens and clones to oneshot your opponents. If you don't have enough clones, you can use cards like Ghostly Flicker, Vanishing(a personal favorite of mine), and Blur to bounce Etrata off the board to avoid shuffling her into your library and keeping her out of the Command Zone so you don't have to recast her.

Some backstory on how this combo works, just because it took me a little bit to learn it properly. If you're new, I hope I can explain this in enough detail for ya: Etrata's triggered ability operates on , so you're able to play instants(Blur) or activate abilities(Vanishing) in response to her ability triggering. After she deals her combat damage, you either phase her out or exile her, then her triggered ability(exiling a target creature with a hit counter on it) will resolve. The game will check for her win condition(if an opponent owns 3 or more exiled cards with hit counters on them, you win the game). You then shuffle your library because the ability resolves regardless of her location - you can phase her out, exile her, return her to your hand or Command Zone - you'll still have to shuffle your library. Ideally, Etrata is never in your library when you shuffle it.
