What do you think about using Insidious Dreams with Gitrog Monster? I am triying to test it in my gitrog deck, it seems like it will be a good interaction.

Thought about Insidious Dreams before, not super keen on it TBH... Let me know if it does anything good in yours though.

Well, in theory I see a lot of ways to use Insidious Dreams in this deck. But the most valuable I think this one:

Gitrog Monster is on the battlefield. Before your turn cast Insidious Dreams, on the resolution of it discard a land and another card, search your library for Skirge Familiar and Dakmor Salvage, put them on top in any order. Draw a card for a Land card discarded with Insidious Dreams (Skirge Familiar for example). Your turn begins and you draw a card on your draw step (Dakmor Salvage). Play Skirge Familiar from your hand, discard Dakmor Salvage with his ability. Here goes Dredge combo.

This way of winning the game with Insidious Dreams is very good, because until the last moment no one suspects what will happen. They just see the harmless frog on the battlefield until it is to late. :) Additionaly Insidious Dreams seems like a good card outside of Gitrog combos.

Again it's just my thoughts on how Insidious Dreams can interact with Gitrog Monster's decks and combos. For approval of practical use and value I need more testing. I could miss something.

Yup, that sounds good, except for one slight thing. Whenever you discard a land which would cause Gitrog to make you draw, you have to pay attention to how things go on the stack and resolve.

In the case of Insidious Dreams, the discard is part of the cost, which means, it resolves like so:

  1. You announce that you are casting it and searching for X (2 in this example) cards.

  2. It goes on the stack.

  3. You pay for it by using 3 and discarding 2 cards (one a land).

  4. Gitrog butts in and says "draw a card, because I saw a land hit your graveyard", the draw trigger goes on the stack

  5. Resolve those triggers by first drawing, then searching, shuffling etc.

So it doesn't work exactly like you think, but I do see how it can be good. I'm just not sold on it. I will give it a shot thought. Maybe it'll impress me.

You right, I missed that discard is an additional cost. At first glance It seemed so promising :P

Matrixxx999 says... #9

Well it still can work with a land sacrifice from Git Rog, well as I said need to test it more. Thanks for clarification about additional cost! :)

Oh, no worries. I was hoping it wasn't coming across like I was being a know-it-all... I knew it worked that way, but double-checked with a judge for the specifics of "Why?" it did.

So even if it doesn't pan out, your enthusiasm sold me on giving Insidious Dreams a try in the very least. Kudos on that :)

very nice deck i like your aproche on the Gitrog Monster where you focus less on the combo and more on versatility i have a gitrog deck my self feel free to go check it, maybe you will fine some idea in it.My deck focus more on winning as fast as posible 75% of my game end on my turn 3. But i realy like your build +1 sir http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-06-16-the-gitgud-monster/

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I'll definitely check out your deck, but I think you need to take it off being Private so I can see it.

Just out of curiosity, why not include Ghost Quarter and/or Ghost Town? Both provide utility to the Hypnotoad, and you seem to have already included every other land-destroying land. Ghost Quarter also allows you to benefit from Burgeoning again when they drop the land.

Personally I also tend to like including Dryad Arbor in most green decks, just for the fact that it's a turn 1 creature if I don't get another in my hand (It also only costs you a land slot, and doubles as a forest.) Worst-case it's a chump that lets you draw from Hypnotoad.

One other thing you might consider, as you're already abusing Kozilek's reshuffle mechanism for Geth's Verdict, would be to include Mesmeric Orb as a win condition. If you're especially worried about losing your win-cons to the mill yourself, you could include Gaea's Blessing to be doubly sure you get that recursion.

All in all I do love the deck as it is, those were just a couple things that sprang to mind as I was playtesting it.

deathchobo: Link no work

reiyo_oki: Thanks for the suggestions! I totally agree that those other LD card are good. It's more a matter of space... I mean, what else could I cut? I will give it a bit of thought though

In the case of Gaea's Blessing, I have one ready to go, but decided not to run it because I don't know what I'd cut, because it is useless if I discard or cast it, and because I'm not sure that the combos are proven to work mathematically, with two reshufflers... Maybe they interfere with each other. Until I read otherwise, I'll leave it be, because no one wants to actually see the combo played out lol

for some reason it wont let me do a link that work so if you want to take a look at it go in the search this is my deck name The Gitgud Monster, Bringer of Hate

Ender666666 For the Arbor, I just cut a forest in every deck. Serves the purpose. For the Ghost Town/Quarter, I'd probably cut Crystal Vein, and possibly the Ancient Tomb

In the case of Mesmeric Orb, that's a trickier question. The only thing that really jumps out at me is Wild Mongrel or Putrid Imp since you have so many other discard outlets, and he doesn't have a good way to get through if you decide to pump and attack.

Ender666666 says... #18

BTW, why Ghost Town? What's that do for me?

June 15, 2016 8:27 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #19

Well without any information I'd assume that Ghost Town could be bounced to hand so you have a land to discard?

June 15, 2016 11:17 a.m.

Ender666666 says... #20

But it only works from the battlefield, and not the graveyard... so I dunno... Kinda meh

Catgroove says... #21

reiyo_oki I don't think Wild Mongrel and Putrid Imp are good cuts, just because they are both free discards outlets. And in the case of Wild Mongrel a win con when paired with Dakmor Salvage if an opponent doesn't know you have it/no blockers. Completely missed that you didn't have Ghost Quarter in here or I would have recommended it a while ago. You haven't been finding Filth useful enough to make the cut? Personally cut the Devoted Druid + Quillspike combo a while ago as I have not been finding it consistent enough to keep. By the time it's online, I'm normally already comboing off.

Ender666666 To see deathchobo list, you need to copy paste the link he put into a new tab and not just click it. IDK why, but it works then. Also never even seen Petrified Field but seems like it could be good in theory. Will test and let ya'll know.

reiyo_oki says... #23

Ender666666 The reason Ghost Town is useful is more for the repeated land drop (More Horn of Greed triggers) and it avoids enemy LD, plus gives you the option for a land discard to your Insidious Dreams. It's not quite on the level of another LD land, but it's still got its purposes.

Catgroove I would cut one, but not both, of the discard chumps. You're right about Mongrel having uses as a beater, however it doesn't have a good way to get through, so it's rather pointless to pump him too much if they have any form of blocker. I dunno, I've just never been a big fan of Mongrel in anything outside Madness decks, so it could just be me being biased.

Ah I see. That makes more sense. Thanks.

Ender666666 says... #25

I've been finding that I don't always have enough lands in hand to fully capitalise on Exploration, Burgeoning, Horn of Greed etc... So I added 4 lands over the last 3 days and made some hard cuts. I hope that this will work to focus the deck and accelerate the engine that draws me cards and get me to victory.
