I think you may want to go up to 4 Raging Ravine before your PTQ on the 5th. Having just two late game win conditions seems a bit fragile to me, as they both just die to Lightning Bolt . The cuts would (probably) be the filter lands presumably. I also think you should have 4 Blackcleave Cliffs , especially because you want a turn 1 land that doesn't deal you damage in addition to your Thoughtseize that you often will be casting off of it. I'm not a fan of the Temple of Malady , as the scry is almost never game changing, and definitely not worth the ETB tapped.

I'm not a fan of the Go for the Throat , unless of course you aren't expecting a lot of Affinity. Another Slaughter Pact seems better to me.

Have you tried Batterskull for midrange decks in the sideboard? It's pretty powerful and near unbeatable if you can land it and they can't answer it. Fulminator Mage is a cool card against control and Tron. Good luck at your PTQ!

I've tried 4 ravines, and I didn't like their effect on slowing me down early. They are more insurance policy than a win-con I look to utilize.

I've also tried the 4 cliffs, but thoughtseizing on turn one is only important in certain match ups, and not something I need to do. With that in mind I chose to go down on the cliffs, since they become severely less useful after my third land drop. To replace them I have been playing the 2 temples, and the have proven phenomenal. When we're in topdeck mode Jund already usually has the upper hand, but I have used that scry effectively so many times I can't describe how worth it those two are.

I had the GftT to get around Spellskite, but after recent testing it has been relegated to the side in favor of another slaughter pact.

Batterskull was in the sb, but I don't expext there to be a whole lot of midrange at the ptq, so I've been testing without it. That will be a gametime decision. And finally I will be borrowing a playset of fulminator mages from a friend before I go down, so they'll certainly be in the sb.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have seen most of the winning lists lately, and I have my own preferences and reasoningsas to why my 75 iisn't an exact copy. I would urge you to test the temples, on turn 1, a turn you don't need the land, or 5+ they do work.

I like your deck :) Jund is fun and dangerous.

You said that you have a good knowledge playing this deck, so wounder if you have any good suggestions for making this deck cheaper. I am mostly thinkning about Liliana of the Veil +Dark Confidant and ofc Tarmogoyf . What would be a good and cheap substitute for them? or do u think the deck will will be too crippled if it looses any of those cards?

I really like this deck! you seem to know the format very well. Check out my modern deck U/W/R Geist Modern, with Keranos and let me know what you think I need some help with it. This deck is great +1 from me

I'm wondering about the decision to cut an Ooze for Batterskull . It hurts with Bob and costs more, just looking for your reasoning. Also, no Rakdos Charm in the board?

September 18, 2014 2:49 p.m.

@Lack

  • So the first thing that comes to mind is there is no cheaper or budget substitutes. That being said, you can find other options that have the same philosophy behind them. Garruk Relentless  Flip has seen play in some lists, and is something the deck might use as a substitute for Liliana. He acts as removal, then becomes a token generator and toolbox. Phyrexian Arena could sub for Bob, but it comes down a turn later, and can't swing for 2. Tarmogoyf has no substitute, but you might be able to get away with upping the number of Scavenging Ooze s and Courser of Kruphix or Kitchen Finks . Most of those tools are favorites of the classic BG "Rock" decks, but could see play in a cheaper Jund.

@GlistenerAgent

  • Batterskull is a more powerful top deck in the late game of a lot of match-ups. Most people don't generally have Artifact hate main board, so it can sometimes steal free wins. ScOoze has a lot of utility, but eventually it came down to I needed to cut a card and adding Grim Lavamancer , I need to lighten up on the use of my GY . Rakdos Charm is good, and I've played with it in the past, but in the matchups where it's good I have better options. The artifact hate isn't as good as Ancient Grudge , and the Twin match up is already hella good. I liked the GY hate aspect of it, but to be honest across the ptq season there weren't enough GY based strategies to warrant cards outside of ScOoze. Golgari Charm Acted as a board wipe against so many decks, but also hit things like Splinter Twin or Leyline of Sanctity .

I said that I would take a look at this deck, and I am thoroughly impressed. This seems to be a very competitive Jund deck, and would be a scary opponent to face off against. I can't really find anything glaringly wrong, there are a few things that come down to personal preference. I find Dreadbore to be a better removal than Terminate, and I know that the argument for Instant speed versus Sorcery is valid, yet I like the feeling of being able to hit a T5 or T6 Karn Liberated. I'm also surprised you don't have Grim Lavamancer as a 3-of. You have 10 sac-lands, and 17 instants and sorceries. That compromises almost half of your deck, and being able to hit with 2 damage each turn that can't be blocked is relevant. I know in the long run Goblin Rabblemaster will outpace it for damage output, but each turn Rabblemaster runs the risk of being blocked by a bigger creature. This may be your way of trying to steer away from the burn approach, but Lavamancer can also act as removal for both creatures and planeswalkers. This is, however, up to you as I am sure you have spent far more time testing with this deck than I have. My last thought is about the 1-of Obstinate Baloth in your sideboard. I know it combos with Liliana of the Veil, but wouldn't that spot be better suited for a GY hate card? You only have Scuze in your mainboard to deal with opposing graveyards, but if another deck ran a Grim Lavamancer mono-red burn or the fast growing Jeskai delver deck, I feel that a stronger card is warranted. Some thoughts include Grafdigger's Cage and Rakdos Charm. I personally like Rakdos Charm better because it still allows for the Scuze pumps.

Anyways, I really enjoyed this deck, and +1!

Thanks, I'll address each point and my thought process for the choices.

  • Dreadbore is great in that it can hit PW's, but There are few PW's in Modern that demand a card that can outright kill them. True it would help deal with a Karn and maybe a Gideon Jura, but the instant speed on Terminate allows me to kill man lands such as Celestial Colonnade which is much more relevant than the off chance to kill a PW.

  • Grim Lavamancer is a 1 of, simply because that's how many I need. It isn't tough to be able to activate every turn, but couple that with the Treasure Cruise craze and GY management is a real thing. With one I can have it sometimes, but I can still reliably manage my GY so my Tarmogoyfs are decidedly larger than my opponents creatures.

  • The SB on here is actually out of date. I have made changes since the meta has shifted, and I do have 2 copies of Grafdigger's Cage The Obstinate Baloth is for the burn and mirror match up, and I don't think it does what you think. I've also added 2 Choke and a Sword of Fire and Ice to the SB.

I'm glad you like it, it's definitely a labor of love. If you have any other comments or questions feel free to drop by.

As I said, this deck looked really good, and you have much more experience with it than I do. Most of my changes were mainly preference based, and I understand your decisions. I like the SB much better now, but I thought the Surgical Extractions were great in there in case someone ends up discarding a Splinter Twin or Scapeshift.

I see some small issues with your manabase. I don't feel that a basic Mountain is necessary, and the second Swamp is important to cast Liliana of the Veil under Blood Moon and in general to have access to your most abundant color while paying less life. I'd also switch a Wooded Foothills to a Bloodstained Mire, as once again black is the color you need the most.

Two cards that I'm interested in your opinion on are Murderous Cut and Dismember. Dismember is obviously very powerful, and in my testing with it Murderous Cut has proven very powerful. I can see the potential for taxing your graveyard with Lavamancer and Cut, but I do feel that Dismember is worth inclusion.

December 31, 2014 10:41 a.m.

The basic mountain is there in case I need Red for Chandra, Pyromaster or Olivia Voldaren without losing too much life. Any deck that plays Blood Moon is a deck that I generally board out Liliana as she's too slow.

I could see the change from a Foothills into a Mire, but an additional basic Swamp is unnecessary with 4 Abrupt Decay.

I have been debating over Murderous Cut, but the way I see it I already play Slaughter Pact Over Dismember due to the life loss if flipped by Bob. Dismember is one hell of a card, but that spot I have filled by Pact, and I like the ability to tap out and blow someone out. Murderous Cut I feel would be worse than Dismember due to the tax on my GY.

I have been thinking about trying out Bitterblossom somewhere in the MB. It helps with the GY management by being a Tribal Enchantment, or just plain being Bitterblossom.

Absolutely wonderful list. The only thing i'm wondering about is why the Fulminator Mage mainboard? Is there that much Tron, Scapeshift, etc. in your meta that it requires them main board? +1 from me.

June 21, 2015 9:13 a.m.

If you look at recent lists, many have switched over to Fulminator Mage Main over Scavenging Ooze. This transition is in respect to the big mana decks, but also because Fulminator is just good against 3 color midrange decks. ScOoze is relevant against less matchups, and has been relegated to the side because of it. With the meta moving towards Big mana decks, Grixis Twin, and Jund/Abzan mirrors, we want a more relevant card in the main against more matchups.

@Contoro what set is it from?

June 24, 2015 2:43 a.m.

Upward-SaGa says... #16

I don't see any lists with Fulminator Mage in the main. At least none in GPs, PPTQs, or GPTs. They all run 3 scooze in the main because scooze is actually more relevant against more decks than Fulminator Mage is. Fulm mage is only great against the jund/junk mirror, scapeshift, and tron. Any other matchup he's a 3 drop 2/2.

June 24, 2015 3:05 a.m.

Upward-SaGa says... #17

There's one list by Julian Nazarenus in the GPT Copenhagen that ran 3 Fulminator Mages in the main, but he also ran 2 scooze in the main.

June 24, 2015 3:22 a.m.

It started at the Invitational a few weeks back, when Brad Nelson was given a list. Then Gerry Thompson continued with it at GP Charlotte. Also I'd like to point out that if you look at the Modern metagame on MTG Top 8, you can see that Fulminator in the mage is worth against about 40% of the Meta game 1. On top of that it gives you an instant speed stone rain, that can hit for 2 a turn and is removal resistant. ScOoze is less relevant, since in most match ups it's a bear. Sure it has the a grind advantage, but Jund already has a chance in those match-ups. Fulminator allows for some play in Game 1 vs our worst match-ups.

This deck looks awesome!! I'm building one myself that you might give me some feedback on if you want to.

Jund budget - Working towards competitive!

Some of the main things I'd like to discuss is Rakdos Charm vs Jund Charm vs Golgari Charm Which is best?

Also some players say Obstinate Baloth sucks for the mirror because only a bad b/g/x player will force you to discard him and he's too slow for burn when life is a factor, but I want to like him. Thoughts?

I'm also confused by your split of Thoughtseize / Inquisition of Kozilek and wanted to know your thoughts on Raging Ravine vs Treetop Village. To me ravine just seems superior so I wonder why anyone would ever play village.
