I would suggest adding a couple of Zhur-Taa Druid . Check out my deck Jund Hydra Ramp

I've changed over to a more hydra heavy build. Think Zhur-Taa Druid may make the cut if I flip it for rotation.

Kalonian Hydra is going to be crazy, I can't wait for M14 either.

Kessig Wolf Run on Savageborn Hydra is insane. It gives it the trample it always wanted, and suddenly you're swinging at someone for like 20 damage.

Maybe you could use an Increasing Savagery or two in this deck? Cast it on Gyre Sage and make hydras with X = 10 or more easy. I almost got destroyed by a deck with it and Corpsejack Menace at my local FNM, getting 10 or 20 counters on something is to be feared.

Maybe when all the vampires rotate out, I should try smashing peoples faces in with Hydras at my local FNM. +1 for a fun deck design, and great ideas.

Thanks! I do love me some Increasing Savagery , but I feel like in this deck it'd be taking up space for turns 3-5 when I'd rather be casting Exava/Menace or some hydras. Plus it gives Domri Rade less creatures to topdeck.

The interaction between Corpsejack Menace and Renegade Krasis is pretty wrong as is. It's quite possible to see this happen...

T2 Gyre Sage

T3 Renegade Krasis , evolve Gyre Sage

T4 Corpsejack Menace , evolve Gyre Sage (2 +1/+1 counters), evolve Renegade Krasis (2 +1/+1 counters), Renegade Krasis 2nd ability triggers and Gyre Sage gets 2 more +1/+1 counters. Gyre Sage is now 6/7, Renegade Krasis is now 5/4.

Then if Kalonian Hydra drops, it'd come in with 8 +1/+1 counters on it, everything would evolve again, and once it swings with Corpsejack Menace on the field it'll get 16 +1/+1 counters, and the rest of the numbers just get ridiculous.

July 7, 2013 5:35 a.m.

Yeah, I can see how Increasing Savagery isn't really necessary in this deck. It was worth a shot though.

On another note, what other mechanic deals with +1/+1 counters? Unleash! Inspiried by your deck, I drafted a quick decklist using Corpsejack Menace, Exava and every other good unleash creature there is, and the results are pretty great from a little testing.

Gore-House Chainwalker is a 4/3 haste, Rakdos Cackler is a 3/3 haste. Hellhole Flailer is a 5/4 haste that can fling itself for 5 damage. And Renegade Krasis is pretty ridiculous when every creature comes into play with a +1/+1 counter by default.

And the deck makes Cryptborn Horror decently playable. I made a 26/26 one when testing without even trying.

Here's my deck idea if you are interested: Menacing Unleash

+1 from me man. This is a cool and original brew. Did you ever think of sqeezing in Elvish Archdruid and going full on elf dork ramp for the creature foundation? Anyway, please feel free to check out my main brew The Voices of Selesnya. Comment and upvote if you like my ideas.

Time to update this by replacing Primordial Hydra with Kalonian Hydra !

July 12, 2013 5:14 a.m.

Emrakool says... #8

Wolfir Silverheart is Kalonian Hydra . Though since it's linked now I suppose I'll change it!

Thanks PrinceOfNeurosis! I give forestlore44 credit for having a more original list before I started this one. My reason for not using Elvish Archdruid is because Renegade Krasis has better synergy with Gyre Sage . Unfortunately Elvish Archdruid 's static effect applies before Gyre Sage can evolve, and so it doesn't evolve when Archdruid enters the battlefield.

Plus Renegade Krasis + Corpsejack Menace + Hydras = Hydra enters with double the number of +1/+1 counters, Renegade Krasis evolves and gets two +1/+1 counters and its 2nd ability puts two more +1/+1 counters on the Hydra that just entered. Not to mention everything else that had a +1/+1 counter.

July 12, 2013 12:56 p.m.

Ah, very sound explanation. In fact, I didn't even think about how Gyre Sage and Elvish Archdruid don't actually synergize the best.

July 12, 2013 1:04 p.m.

Might I suggest Savage Summoning? It would let you drop a creature on their endstep, uncounterable, with a +1/+1 counter.

Emrakool says... #11

I think I might be able to find room for it in the SB. Thanks for the suggestion!

i would take out the Renegade Krasis . if you're going the haste avenue he probably will get you two counters on your other creatures by the time the game ends. I would take out a gyre sage and add in 3 elvish mystic. throw in a rakdos's return or two to slow down opponets especially against control. kessig wolfrun seems rather unnecessary since kalonian hydra already has trample, and kessig only produces colorless in a three color deck. if trample is really an issue throw in rancor. dump the primordial hydras and throw in 2 more savageborn hydras because most of the time primordial hydra will get removed before it becomes big, whereas sageborn comes in just as big and has doublestrike. be careful wit your lands you only have 11 "forests" for arbor elf to work with. check out my similar deck HYDRAS m14

I run Renegade Krasis because it's one of a fairly small number of 3cmc creatures available to Jund that can become a threat on its own. The fact that it adds counters to my other creatures is just icing on the cake.

Kessig Wolf Run isn't a big issue as the deck still has 17 lands that produce green mana, Farseek for additional mana fixing (which pulls shock lands for Arbor Elf ), plus it turns ANY creature into a trampling ball of death, not just a hydra.

As far as Primordial Hydra vs Savageborn Hydra , they're both going to hit the battlefield at the same size, and the only difference between the two is Ultimate Price kills one of them and Renounce the Guilds kills the other. Plus we're talking about hydras here, and as they say "Variety is the spice of life." :)

This deck made me want to see Alpha Authority squeezed in there somehow, at least in the sideboard. It'd be sad to see a 20/20 die to something as simple as Murder ...

Which suddenly makes Sheltering Word tempting as well...

Zacoly says... #16

BTW, great deck description, and fun idea!!!+1 from me!

(also I spotted Sheltering Word in the sideboard after I posted my last comment :)

July 23, 2013 1:39 a.m.

Emrakool says... #17

Yeah Sheltering Word 's in the SB. That was the idea. "Ok, you're playing heavy removal? Sure, kill my hydra. Haha it's still there and I just doubled my life total!"

Stop it! lol. These hydra decks are so painful to see and THIS ONE bakes, decorates and takes the cake. Kill spells and stuff like Blind Obedience and Imposing Sovereign are your worst enemy BUT it's still just nasty. +1

Thanks! Not sure if I'm going anywhere with the idea after rotation, but I couldn't resist making my friends argue over how many counters are getting thrown around. I guess Golgari Charm could see some use in the SB.

This looks incredibly fun! +1

I take it you really don't like Burning Earth ?

September 15, 2013 10:21 a.m.

Emrakool says... #21

Thanks! I suppose Burning Earth could be painful, I'm still in the process of reworking the mana base and sideboard for post rotation. Fortunately the mana dorks don't trigger it, plus Gyre Sage and Sylvan Caryatid if not dealt with right away can stand up to their fair share of burn.

RedCloud2012 says... #24

It might be too slow vs mono in the new meta think one less gyre and add another sylvan but anger the gods is going to be killing your dorks without targeting and burning earth may cause some grief. I would maybe try to ramp into Primeval Bounty because I think a little life gain will go far not to mention its other great abilities. You got alot of big things in big numbers so I assure you there is room.

September 18, 2013 2:40 a.m.

Emrakool says... #25

I've considered Primeval Bounty and opted for Garruk instead since if I get the lone copy he helps me keep the pressure on. Not too worried about Anger of the Gods unless it happens before I can tap a dork to cast something bigger before it goes off. Primeval Bounty sounds like excellent SB material. Thanks!

Thanks Mello.Mel! I really thought I'd be missing Primordial Hydra after initial playtests sometimes had one at over 1000 counters by Turn 7. Theros didn't disappoint with its replacements. :)

@Dreno33, I figured Carl's Jr. would have to support something of this magnitude. Maybe I can turn FNM into Friday Night Rehabilitation with this deck. :)
