The Simic are a group of uncharted depths, and unfathomable mystery. They hide in there pools, creating HUGE Mutant creatures, capable of huge destruction.
The Izzet are a group of mad scientist's, the do what it takes to advance science, the don't care who get's hurt.
The Gruul are masters of destruction, yet growth. They are as wild as the beasts they live with, yet there is a hidden power within them.
.
When these three guilds started meeting in the secret halls under the Izzet, an Army was formed. An army capable of destruction that neither Ravnica or Theros had ever seen. This is that army.
Cedric Philips recently wrote an article about how a third color in a G/r Monster shell is practically free due to the stable mana base, this lead to a rise in Jund Monsters. After watching a Jund Monsters deck play recently the brewing mind inside of me got thinking, "If this Monsters deck can do well splashing black, what would happen if I splayed blue?."
This deck is a RUG Monsters deck. It uses a combination of powerful creatures, great draw engines, ramp, and tempo, to muscle your opponent and eventually run over them.
G/r has been a force in standard for a while, but recently it has just been getting out matched by it's brethren the Jund Monsters. I believe that the Blue splash is as effective if not more! It creates a much better game against control, and the mirror match.
These are the KEY Cards that the blue splash gives us access to:
Cyclonic Rift: A complete board reset: Let's start the game over except I don't start over. Seems fair. While being amazing against the Semi-Mirror it is also more the decent against control where bouncing a Detention Sphere or there board of Elspeth, Sun's Champion tokens can be the difference in the game.
Keranos, God of Stroms: My first standard deck ever was Izzet, so maybe I just have a soft spot for the guild of my beginnings, but he seems really good. Draws, and it keeps the pressure on (Story of my deck). Not even impossible to make a creature!
Kiora, the Crashing Wave: I'm very much all aboard the Kiora band wagon! It is great in the Mirror, good against control, and who doesn't like betting mono black with 9/9 freaking Krakens!
Prophet of Kruphix: More then one is overkill but I'm almost always happy to draw this. It just shapes the game so much!
Turn / Burn
: This card has yet to see its hay-day in standard. It just doesn't have the right shell as Izzet Control see's almost no play! In this build however, it's fantastic! It kills anything and means my Elvish Mystic can kill their Worldspine Wurm.
This blue splash means my late game isn't a top deck fest, and that we simply have more board control.
The rest of the deck is your typical G/r Shell but I'll still go through the card choices:
Ramp
-(Elvish Mystic)- It's the only turn one mana dork in standard, it's also the best turn one play in standard.
-(
Sylvan Caryatid
)- An amazing dork, it has a fantastic butt and just loves being tapped:).
-(Courser of Kruphix)- Because I like cheating at magic.
Removal
-(Mizzium Mortars)- Quality G/r removal, and it's easy to overload.
Bombs
-(Scavenging Ooze)- Quality card, puts in a lot of work. The first one makes the next couple worse so only a one of.
-(Polukranos, World Eater)- Wouldn't be a monsters deck without him.
-(Stormbreath Dragon)- He's a dragon, a monster, and kinda a good card! What's not to like!
Walkers
-(Domri Rade)- With more spells he becomes less efficient so not the full 4 of. He's still Domri so I'll take 3!
-(Xenagos, the Reveler)- He isn't a god, but he'll do! I use him more then you would think for his plus one and he can create explosive turns!
That's the deck in a nutshell! I hope you like it! I'll be testing this deck on cockatrice and if you want to play some rounds shout at me!
Please comment and plus 1!
