I wanted to create a deck that was built on synergy. In this case, the synergy is built around enchantments and the graveyard.
One of the cards that caught my eye was
Strength from the Fallen
. Boosting a creature by how many creatures are in the graveyard every time an enchantment enters can make for some big swings.
Another card I wanted to build around was
Extinguish All Hope
, which can do insane things and mercilessly kills just about every creature-based deck out there. But you don't want to kill your own creatures - so what if we made it so you can't?
I decided to build on the Constellation theme and use
Extinguish All Hope
by creating an Abzan beatdown deck with all enchantments. I took powerful enchantment creatures and enchantments, threw in removal, and came up with the following roster:
Master of the Feast: A very hard card to deal with for most decks. You better find a removal spell or you'll be dead pretty quickly.
Doomwake Giant
: Another powerful card. You'll be triggering its Constellation just about on every turn.
Eidolon of Blossoms: Card advantage. It's not uncommon to draw 2-3 cards per turn with one (or more) of these out on the field.
Herald of Torment
: Decent three-drop; even better five drop that makes everything else better and triggers Constellation.
Courser of Kruphix: Self-explanatory.
Boon Satyr
: A great bestow creature, plus an instant-speed Constellation trigger for
Strength from the Fallen
. Makes for a blow-out combat trick.
Murderous Cut
: Great removal spell.
Satyr Wayfinder and Commune with the Gods: Typical enablers.
Whip of Erebos: Lifegain and whipping back big creatures. Helps trigger Constellation on two levels.
Extinguish All Hope
: Back-breaking gamewinner. There aren't many decks that can survive a resolved one of these. Not hard to cast at six mana, either.
Pharika, God of Affliction: Can trigger Constellation, and can turn into a creature fairly easily. Also, she produces instant-speed enchantment creatures, which helps turn
Strength from the Fallen
into a combat trick.
Sideboard:
I'm putting white in the manabase because I want to bring in white enchantments if I need more removal, and bring in Erase against other Whip-based decks. Banishing Light is primarily for planeswalkers;
Suspension Field
is for Siege Rhino and other problematic creatures. Both trigger Constellation.
This deck is pretty powerful. In testing, I've had Blossoms swing for 20 points of damage in the mid to late game. It matches up extremely well against midrange and control, which is where the current meta is. Of course, Erase is a ridiculously powerful card against this deck, but most people only run one or two in their sideboard.
