Ezuri, Claw of Progress

Ezuri, Claw of Progress Simic Counters EDH version 1.1

Deck Intro

This deck picks up the pieces where my Prime Commander Zegana EDH deck left off. In fact, I haven't played (or updated) Zegana in over a year, and since it's my most viewed deck (over 30k views at the time of this writing) I figured I would be doing "Newzuri" a disservice by not giving this deck the same in-depth description as I did for Zegana (some of which is copy-pastad). Let's dive right in.

The general idea with this deck is to play early game ramp in order to get our commander out as soon as possible to start triggering experience counters by playing as many small, evasive creatures as we can. There are numerous synergies with +1/+1 counters, for obvious reasons. We've got a few decent evasive creatures, some of which have infect for quick kills.

Finally, we've got some proliferate mechanics. Proliferate provides synergy with +1/+1 counters, -1/-1 counters, Poison counters, and our XP counters.

Play this deck if you like:

playing lots of creatures
stomping opponents with huge creatures
drawing lots of cards
math

Don't play this deck if you like:

stax
lots of counterspells
creature-less decks

Sage of Hours

Creature Choices

Pretty much all of our creatures are small enough to trigger XP counters, or have other ways of helping us gain XP.

Acidic Slime

Staple green removal.

Avenger of Zendikar

Already a hefty green staple, this thing gives us 1 XP for each land we control.

Bane of Progress

Enchantment and artifact board wipe.

Birds of Paradise

Mana fixing/ramping on an evasive body.

Blighted Agent

Win con. With enough XP this guy can one-shot people, depending on what Infect rules your playgroup uses.

Champion of Lambholt

This lady can turn into a huge beater pretty quickly, especially if the next creature played is Avenger of Zendikar . She'll quickly ramp up into at least a 9/9 and our opponents will be unable to block anything you have unless they have an Eldrazi. An absolute all-star in this deck.

Chasm Skulker

Pure XP engine. Play it when we have a way of quickly placing several +1/+1 counters on it.
i.e. DON'T play it if Ezuri's not on the field or if we have no card draw

Coiling Oracle

Simple, cheap card draw or ramp.

Cold-Eyed Selkie

Evasive body, triggers lots of card draw.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest

Political card, hopefully preventing our opponents from attacking us (usually works) and provides card draw.

Eternal Witness

Staple green recursion.

Fathom Mage

Card draw engine.

Fertilid

Ramp, deck thinning.

Forgotten Ancient

This guy gets pretty big, pretty quickly. In multiplayer, this will be getting plenty of +1/+1 counters each round. If Fathom Mage is on the field, we'll pretty much be drawing 3-4 cards each turn. Or move the counters onto Champion of Lambholt to help make your creatures unblockable.

Glen Elendra Archmage

2+ counterspells and 2+ XP on an evasive body.

Gyre Sage

Pure mana ramp.

Hangarback Walker

XP engine. If =2, for we get a minimum potential of 4 XP, assuming Ezuri is on the field and we start with 0 XP.

Hooded Hydra

Another XP engine. Similar too Chasm Skulker and Hangarback Walker , we get most of our XP when this thing dies. The general idea would be to play it as a Morph creature first to get some initial XP, then turn it face up later on. Counters placed on the 2/2 morph creature stay on the hydra when turned face up, so don't be afraid to sacrifice this guy as a blocker, or trick an opponent into blocking it with something that could kill it, or if you get attacked with an Annihilator trigger.

Hornet Queen

7 mana for 5 XP, 5 evasive bodies (or 5 deadly blockers).

Master Biomancer

I realize this is a non-bo with Ezuri, as all creatures bigger than 0/1 will no longer trigger XP, but in the mid-to-late game when we've already got a lot of XP this guy can quickly turn our 2nd main phase weenies into powerful beatsticks.

Mulldrifter

This will mostly be cast for its Evoke cost, for some efficient card draw which also triggers XP. In the very late game, we can cast it for its normal casting cost and stick an evasive body on the board.

Mycoloth

Another creature which doesn't trigger XP directly, but if ignored can spiral out of control.

Mystic Snake

Counterspell on an XP-triggering body.

Oracle of Mul Daya

Ramp, can help prevent dead draws.

Plaxcaster Frogling

One of our few creatures which don't trigger XP, but has beautiful synergy with our +1/+1 counters by providing Hexproof. Useful if played before Ezuri.

Prime Speaker Zegana

I missed playing with her. Unfortunately, she has absolutely no way of triggering XP. She does, however, allow us to draw a TON of cards and dig for one of our finishers.

Reclamation Sage

Staple green removal, second only to Acidic Slime .

Sage of Hours

Win con. Infinite turns, anyone?

Sakura-Tribe Elder

This deck loves creature-based ramp for obvious reasons.

Simic Manipulator

With enough XP, we can easily steal Eldrazis from our opponents (and I've repeatedly done so — they didn't learn).

Solemn Simulacrum

I don't think I need to give a reason to run ol' Sad Robot.

Thrummingbird

Small, evasive body with proliferate.

Trygon Predator

Evasive body with spot removal trigger.

Viral Drake

Small and evasive, plus infect and proliferate can mean instant death for an opponent. Just about as dangerous as Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon without access to black.

Vorel of the Hull Clade

Why yes, I would love to double the counters on that!

Wild Beastmaster

It's like getting Overwhelming Stampede (but without trample) every combat. Combos extremely well with evasive or unblockable creatures (I'm looking at you, Champion of Lambholt !). Or if all else fails just combo it with our Overwhelming Stampede and beat face.

Wood Elves

More creature-based ramp.

Zameck Guildmage

Nice +1/+1 counter synergy. We'll mainly be using this for the card draw ability as we want to avoid our creatures coming in at 3 power or more.

Inexorable Tide

Other Spells and Additional Synergies

Inexorable Tide / Tezzeret's Gambit / Contagion Engine

Proliferate, baby! Aww yeaaaah. If you skipped over the intro, proliferate does a lot of things for this deck and you should scroll up and read if you're unsure.

Awakening Zone / From Beyond

XP engines and mana ramping. I've yet to include an Eldrazi in this deck as a fishing target for From Beyond , so right now it's simply redundancy.

Arachnogenesis

Holy heck, this card does some serious work. Stave off any attack with the fog effect, plus earn XP in the process! And for just , feels good man.

Fable of Wolf and Owl

Token & XP engine.

Doubling Season

Unfortunately we cannot double our XP directly, but we can double the +1/+1 counters we get at combat, and double the creature tokens we get from our several token generators, which in turn doubles our XP.

Verdant Confluence

Sort of a Swiss Army Knife for green players. Counter play, ramp, and recursion. Don't build a green deck without it!

Zoetic Cavern

Cast it as a morph creature to trigger XP and sneak an extra land into play.

Bident of Thassa

Card draw engine. Also forces our opponents to attack, which can be used to set up for a big Arachnogenesis or force them to attack into our creatures that we want to die.

Overwhelming Stampede / Triumph of the Hordes

Finishers. Do I need to explain? I hope not.

Suggestions

Updates Add

Out:
Beastmaster Ascension - I'm normally not attacking with hordes of expendables
Progenitor Mimic - not much synergy in this deck aside from with Avenger of Zendikar, so it relies too much on enemy creatures
Elvish Visionary - maybe if this deck were an Elfball deck, but it's not

In:
Triumph of the Hordes - finisher
Overwhelming Stampede - finisher
Contagion Engine - proliferate synergy
