Another Feather Primer !? How is it different than others ?

Feather is a tool box commander, it could be built in several different way. I made this because there were no feather deck with this idea of self-hate + ping damage.

Here others great primers for every others direction feather could be built on:

  1. as a Heroic/token Commander

  2. as a Midrange/Combo Commander

  3. as a Blink/Flicker/Enter the Battlefield Commander

  4. as a Voltron/Hatebears Commander

This is the strategy that i used before, draw a ton of card with our draw effect. And inflict damage because you casted a spells, so the idea is to cast a maximum of cheap instants whatever the effect, cast them during each opponent turn and inflict damage.

I had this strategy in mind for a lot of time but the new card Brash Taunter decided me that i might be feasible to do a deck like this. The 2 bests creature for this are Brash Taunter and Stuffy Doll becaus ethey already have indestructibility". This is one of the weak point of the deck: Boros Reckoner Mogg Maniac Spitemare Truefire Captain don't have indestructibility. So we need to give it to them before burning them.
There is 2 type of card that give indestructibility in this deck: Instant and Permanent indestructibility (enchantment/equipment).

I choose to use mostly permanent indestructibility because in a 4 players pod we would need to cast the indestructibility spell 4 times in a row so all the 2 manas indestructible instant are in fact worse than permanent because they would cost more. I kept the one mana indestructible instant to keep flexibility to protect others creatures and to have the of both world (mana saving and flexibility). Also permanent can be tutored with Enlightened Tutor.

There 4 categories of burn spells:

Instant any target:

Those are the spells that we can cast each turn no matter which stuffy doll we have on the battle field.

  • Blazing Salvo of course we accept the 3 damages

  • Fire Prophecy burn + we MAY eliminate card that we don't need in our hand and draw.

  • Intimidation Bolt Really not a good burn card but efficient to avoid attack if we have an threatening board in front of us.

  • Lightning Bolt classic 3 damage for 1

  • Reckless Rage Burn + removal at the same time

  • Skred growing burn, with 23 basic snow land in the deck, by turn 5 (12 cards draw including main 7 and turn five to be able to burn a stuffy) without considering that we have a draw instant we have a probability of getting 2 of 81.9%. 55.4% of getting 4 and 28.3% of getting 4. So most of the time it will be at least a 2 and most likely a 3 to 6 damage for 1 mana. With 2 activation of draw and still turn five (14 cards draws), probability are: 2 88.5%, 3 67.5%, 4 40.7%.

Instant Red Target only:

These card have the drawback of not being able to target stuffy doll but they work with every other card similar to her. They compensate this drawback by inflicting a lot of damage for only 1 mana.

Damage More:

These cards have the drawback of necessitating the use of another burn card before being able to use them but they can inflict a lot of damage.

Removals

With Torchling abilities (see dedicated panel) you can use these removals multiple time.

Board-Wipes

Blasphemous Act both a boardwipe and a non-reusable burn card in this card.

Tragic Arrogance One of the only card that can deal with noncreature threats.

Non-Indestructible Protection

Indestructible is cool but there is plenty of threat to our gamepiece that can work around indestructible (exile, sacrifice, -x/-x, etc. We could have answer to them with both protection or blink, since we have 3 creatures that have etb effect (Boreas Charger, Goblin Matron, Imperial Recruiter) i choosed blink effects. We also need blink to reset Stuffy Doll.

Damages

  • Aria of Flame Yes you are giving 30 lifepoints but if you cast 4 spell each turn you will do from Aria of flame these damages: turn 1: 10, turn 2: 26, turn 3: 42 damage

  • Fiery Emancipation Triple damages but only from our source. If you use a burn spell on one of the stuffy it will be tripled and then triple again when the stuffy deal damage to an opponent. So with stuffy it's actually a x9 damages. (27 damages from a simple Lightning Bolt).

  • Gratuitous Violence The best damage doubler in our specific deck because all our damages to player sources are creatures, obviously the ping damage one like Guttersnipe, the stuffy doll likes take the damage and deal as much to a target player. And it cost "only" 5 mana.

  • Torbran, Thane of Red Fell Boost everything except stuffy doll.

Others

  • Chandra, Torch of Defiance ramp + potential burn.

  • Burning Prophet filter what we will draw with draw cards.

  • Double Vision double the burn damage and double the draw but DON'T double the ping damage because copies are not casted they don't trigger the ping damage creatures that have "whenever you cast a spell".

  • Pariah It protect us from damages, it make a combo with Fiery Emancipation or Gratuitous Violence and some stuffy dolls like Boros Reckoner or Spitemare because you can make it grow by doubling or tripling damage as many time as you need by targeting yourself with the stuffy and when you have enough damage target the player you want to kill.

Why include Torchling ? Torchling has an amazing ability, for one red you can redirect spell that target it to another target. And yes you can check if you don't believe me the spell will comeback to your hand because it targeted torchling and then the replacement target happened. So you can use your burn spells opponent creatures and still gets them back.
Because Skred could easily burn for 5 or 6 with them.

I agree with Control_Train and Suns_Champion and their cut of Sunforger. "It's too mana intensive and not that good as a value engine" because we have lot of rendundancy in spells.

If you want to include it i suggest the following changes:

This deck require a lot of card to function properly. Until we get more card similar to stuffy doll with built in indestructible i will not be able include these cards:
  • Primal Amulet   ramp + potential copy but at 4 mana and with very low amount of instant/sorceries that cost more than 1 mana i have a hard time justifying it in the deck.

These 2 can be really god but here they could "only" draw me card or give indestructibility to every creatures, so they are not as good as in other feather deck.

The 2 bests one missing from my deck.

  • Livewire Lash transform any card into a mini stuffy doll. give me the same without the 2 damage limit and i sign right there !

  • Truefire Captain 4 fixed colors mana and not tutorable

Too much burn cards, too few slots, here the interesting ones that i needed to cut during the journey.

  • Chain Lightning This burn spell can be used as a mana sink since you can pay 2 mana for 3 more damage as many time as you have mana to pay for it.

  • Fall of the Hammer 2 mana for 3 with targeting feather that could be used both as a removal or as a burn spells, i preferred to it Fire Prophecy since we already have a lot of removal in the deck.

  • Lightning Axe I was really on the fence with this one since we draw a lot with feather i could be good to use the card not wanted to used it for 1 but it's still a big drawback in many situation.

Sorceries:

These cards have the drawback of being only usable during our turn but the compensate with mass damages.

  • Fiery Gambit At first this card seems bad because it doesn't look like you can get it back with Feather. BUT if you look at the Gatherer official page for this card "You must choose a target creature when you cast Fiery Gambit. If that target isn’t legal on resolution, Fiery Gambit has no effect and you don’t even flip a coin." So even if you loose the flip this card will get back to your hand with Feather.

  • Shivan Meteor 13 damage for 5 mana.

  • Star of Extinction boardwipe and burn, if it were reusable with feather i would havec included it.

  • Into the Maw of Hell Worse Shivan Meteor but it still 13 damages !

  • Jaya's Immolating Inferno Can hit 3 target so it could be used as a burn and a removal, but i would rather spend these mana in multiple casting of cheaper burn spells.

Asymmetrical:

  • Fire Servant This damage doublers work only for burn spell.

  • Gisela, Blade of Goldnight Usually the very best damage doubler because it shut down the damage we receive, but it cost 7 mana and more important it shut down all our strategy of burning our own stuffy doll like creature.

  • Angrath's Marauders

Symmetrical:

I'm really relunctant to include symmetrical damage doublers.

  • Acrobatic Maneuver Blink + Draw, for 2 mana it would be in the deck.

  • Apostle's Blessing Protection to creature or artefact without our need for indestructibility it would be in the deck.

  • Graceful Reprieve This card is really interesting because it enable damage to occur like indestructibility spell and make etb work, it can also get back card that were sacrificed if you respond to the sacrifice. Not in the deck because it cost 2 mana and we have 1 mana indestructible instants.

  • Sphinx-Bone Wand Very similar to Aria of Flame but 7 mana is just too much.

  • Veilstone Amulet Basically giving all your creature hexproofs.

  • Aetherflux Reservoir Can't really gain enough life to use it's - 50 lifepoint ability but still a nice card.

  • Firesong and Sunspeaker Could work well with Aetherflux Reservoir, but without it it's just life gain "for nothing" (but with burn we would gain lot of life), don't worth the 6 mana for me.

  • Monastery Mentor Awesome card but it doesn't fit the game plan.

  • Irencrag Pyromancer is a bit different, if you manage to have 2 draw card in hand you can burn every turn for 3 damage.

  • Gideon's Sacrifice You swing at me with lethal damage ? Hmm no, YOU die. Combo with Blasphemous Act you can at the very least deal 26 damages, hopefully more (nota: the stuffy doll like creature receive all the damage from all your creatures at once, so you can only target one player). This card is not in the deck because it DOESN'T target so you will not get it back with feather, it's a single silver bullet, that's why it preferred Pariah
