Feeding the strangler (22-7-1 at fnm)

Standard* Competitive Control FNM WB (Orzhov)

TobyG

Sideboard

Creature (3)

Enchantment (1)

Planeswalker (1)

This deck obliterates aggro. Against control, it is slightly more luck of the draw, to see who gets more planeswalkers.

The Creatures

Torrential Gearhulk: strong body that usually kills a creature on etb.

Linvala, the Preserver: it is the nature of this deck that in most situations, we will have less life and fewer creatures than our opponent. This makes linvala a very powerful card.

Other Spells

Stasis Snare : great for the bigger creatures that silkwrap cannot get.

Transgress the Mind: hits most of the important cards in every matchup except white weenie, in which it will be boarded out in.

Anguished Unmaking: 3 life is worth it to exile any nonland at instant speed

Declaration in Stone: exiling any creature for 2 mana is worth a clue. I don't care about the clue, i care about stabilizing.

Painful Truths: powerful draw spell, 3 cards for 3 is a good rate.

Ob Nixilis Reignited: he draws cards, kills creatures, and threatens to go ultimate. If an opponent doesn't have Ruinous Path or Anguished Unmaking, he takes over the game.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar: he stops aggro decks in their tracks with all the blockers he provides, and if left unchecked, you win the game

Liliana, the Last Hope: coming down on turn 3 and shutting off attackers is very strong, then she has the added bonus of getting back your creatures and threatening to win the game with her ultimate.

Descend upon the Sinful: many people run Planar Outburst in this spot, but with many decks playing Selfless Spirit and avacyn, this is much more reliable, with the added bonus of possibly netting you a 4/4.

Sorin, Grim Nemesis: he is worth the six mana. His minus X kills creatures and planeswalkers while giving me precious life, and his +1 gives card advantage to me and loss of life to them.

Only 4 people showed up, so we played round robin.

Match 1: 2-1 vs g/w midrange This was a wierd combination of humans and tokens. I won the first game by controlling his creatures and finishing with Gideon. I then lost game 2 to Gideon, since I had left out all my planes walker removal, thinking he was an Aggro deck. Once I brought it back, game 3 once again went my favor.

Match 2: 2-1 vs sultai brains control This is a horrible matchup, I got lucky. In game 1, i died to the the instant speed rise from the tides for ten that my deck has no answer to. Luckily, in games 2 and 3, my opponent did not draw any planeswalker removal, so I could kill him with Gideon before he found rise from the tides.

Match 3: my opponent, who was 0-2, had dropped.
