This is an Orzhov midrange deck styled on Paul Rietzl's Pro Tour Theros build. There is a huge pool of powerful cards in the format for BW, and I'd love suggestions for what to add and what to take out. With that in mind, please take into consideration the curve. On to the list!
Soldier of the Pantheon- Great card. Against control, he just chips away at their life total for a few turns, can't be detention Sphere'd. Against Aggro, trades with anything and picks up a point or two of life. However, as there are only 9 lands in the deck that can play him turn one, we only play two.
Thoughtseize- Do I even need a reason?... Well actually we do. This card can take the critical accelerant or threat against green matchups, a Thassa or Master of Waves, or an Underworld connections against Mono B. While sided out against aggro (Which is very underplayed at my LGS), it is the most efficient, proactive card in the format, bar none. As this card is either really good or mediocre, we play 4. Most importantly, it can nab an Aetherling.
Precinct Captain- Though often awkward to cast immediately after a Thoughtseize, the Captain is really all things to all people. Against aggro he races, against control he's an army in a can. We play three.
Pack Rat- Easier to cast than Precinct Captain, he can take over a board with ease. Honestly, he's only good because most non-black decks in the format have pitifully small amounts of removal, but as that is the world we live in, that's the card we play. Possibly cut for Bile Blight. Play 2.Doom Blade- Against pretty much everything but mono-black, this card is great. Against mono-black, well, side in Dark Betrayal. We play 3.
Devour Flesh- Only a one-of, but nice for dealing with Blood Baron preboard. After board we have Lifebane Zombie, but seriously, any card with protection from both our colors is a bitch.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos- The new kid on the block, I plan to add him when Born of the Gods arrives. He has excellent game against opposing desecration demons, and is even more of an army in a can than Precinct Captain is. We play four.
Read the Bones- Eh, painful card advantage. We run four because it means we pretty much always have 5 mana turn five if we want, and can search up an answer if necessary.
Hero's Downfall- What do you know, it's the best instant-speed removal in the format. Between this and Thoughtseize, we have a powerful, disruptive core. We play four, as it's never dead.
Desecration Demon- This is not a subtle card. 6/6 Flier for 4, kills people dead, etc. We play four.
Whip of Erebos- A potent card, but a natural one-of. Terrible in pairs, but when we find it (With, say, Read the Bones) it makes our Obzedats insane, and is trump in any attrition matchup.
Obzedat, Ghost Council- Is fantastic. Beats up control decks that lean on Detention Sphere, and can let us 'just win' against those neato-keen 1-Elspeth win con UW control decks.
Blood Baron of Vizkopa- A potent sideboard card, good enough in enough matchups that we want to run one main.
