Swamp doesn't have flash. Reanimate isn't instant. Hellkite Overlord doesn't have ability, that requires discarding it. Add in some Putrid Imp , Entomb and Dark Ritual .

I don't see any discard mechanism for you.

Aren't you not required to play a card your first turn? Wait till turn 2, have 8 cards in hand, discard Hellkite Overlord, play a swamp and then Reanimate.

Colgate says... #4

How can you discard, that Hellkite Overlord before you play Swamp and Reanimate ?

December 16, 2013 1:53 a.m.

CastleSiege says... #5

...You skip your first turn, draw a card at the beginning of your next upkeep. Since you have 8 cards in hand you can either play something or discard a card...

Colgate says... #6

yes EITHER play something or discard a card. In your description you're doing both.

CastleSiege says... #7

Ah, that's my bad. I wasn't thinking that discarding is at the end of the phase. Still, it's a turn 3 Hellkite Overlord.

Yeah, while for example Swamp , Dark Ritual , Entomb , Reanimate is turn one Hellkite Overlord or even better turn one Iona, Shield of Emeria .

Thank you from reminding about Hellkite Overlord . The most interesting is, that its dragon with greater power than six and haste.

Take out 2x Drowned Catacomb and 2x Darkslick Shores for your 4x City of Brass . (Y don't u just run normal pain lands?)

Couldn't hurt to also add in some Creeping Tar Pit

Creeping Tar Pit comes in tapped no matter what and with the mana it takes to turn it into a creature I could be using it to summon a Hellkite. I'll keep the normal pain lands in mind though.

I'll suggest original duals and fetches.

Colgate, I don't have that kind of money to throw around lmao, those would be good additions though!

Then I'll suggest -4 Underground River , -2 City of Brass , +2 Darkslick Shores and +4 Gemstone Mine .

December 25, 2013 6:50 a.m.

CastleSiege says... #17

I put in the four Underground River because they come in untapped no matter what, but I'll definitely consider adding some Gemstone Mine .

December 25, 2013 7:59 a.m.

Colgate says... #18

Darkslick Shores comes into play tapped only if you already control more than two lands and you do not ever need your fourth land anyway so it's basically cheap Underground Sea for you.

CastleSiege says... #19

I had four in the deck but I pulled two. I still have two in the deck.

The reason I put Underground River in the deck is because I'm not guaranteed to always get my combo going by turn one or two. Darkslick Shores isn't nearly as good if I'm playing it in a slower game and having it come in tapped.

I playtested this deck twice. The first time was a nightmare. I drew only Swamps, and after Brainstorm , Entomb , Buried Alive , 3 Gitaxian Probe and 11 turns, I finally drew an Exhume and got a Hellkite Overlord onto the battlefield.

The second time was great. I managed to get an Underground River , cast Dark Ritual , then Entomb ed a Hellkite Overlord and Exhume d it all on turn 1. So this deck can be incredibly explosive. But I didn't see any consistency with it. Looks fun, but maybe not competitive.

twospires, you can't only playtest a deck twice before you decide it's inconsistent.

OK, touche. I've tried it a few more times just to see when the combo pans out and it seems like roughly half the time you get it on turn 3. The other half I don't draw a Reanimate -type spell until maybe turn 8 or later. And "success" here is getting out a Hellkite Overlord . Since I haven't been playing against another deck, that's not even taking into account the possibility of them attacking (life drops dangerously low from City of Brass , Underground River , and Gitaxian Probe ), countering spells, or even just casting Terminate on the Dragon as soon as it comes out. Fun combo, but doesn't seem actually viable in a deck.

Consider Crosis's Catacombs for a land instead of your swamps. It will give you all the colors you need, will allow you to bounce your Gemstone Mine to play it again at full counters, and best yet you can still get full mana production for that turn because it comes into play untapped (and you can tap the land before you bounce it for the lair land). Sure, you get a little delayed with the land drops, but you're really low on land anyway.

The other lair to consider would be Darigaaz's Caldera , but I think the Crosis land is better for you overall since it gives both blue and black, your most common colors.

Also, it can help you get that turn 2 discard due to eight cards in hand AND play a land that turn if you end up with the Hellkite Overlord in your opening hand, or early draw.

Additionally, no life loss from it.

Take out 2x Underground River and 2x Swamp for 4x Crosis's Catacombs . That's my suggestion.

At any rate, nice deck.

Thanks for suggesting Crosis's Catacombs ! I never even thought about adding that card. I'll have to playtest with it and see how it works out.
