You should really be playing the full 4 Serum Visions because it is the best cantrip/dig spell in modern. Also, if you're not wanting to invest in fetchlands you should be playing the full 4 Steam Vents and Sulfur Falls and maybe even one or two copies of Shivan Reef so you can always have access to both colours.

PlattBonnay i am glad to get some help of yours :)

i will try the full playset Serum Visions now ! They do a good job

i wasn't sure about Shivan Reef because it slows down the Sulfur Falls - and i am not sure about Sulfur Falls either because two of them in opening hand are just like Izzet Guildgate ... till now my mana wasn't a big deal (my last test was with just 1 YoungPyromancer, but he is so effective that i play 4 copies now and maybe my manacurve needs these fixing lands now - let's give it a try)

i added the Steam Vents to my wantslist they are perfect !!!, but they are expensive too - i bought 2 till now and i bet i could get 2 more when they rotate out of standard for lower price hopefully

one last question: what do you think about Manamorphose in this deck? it replaces itself and 'lowers' the deckcount like Gitaxian Probe and fetches do, additionally it is a spell that can flip Delver of Secrets  Flip or activate Young Pyromancer and at least it can fix my manacurve a little (i can play more Mountain and it can transform RR , UR into RR, UR , UU)

the cons of this card are the decksize of 60 and the price (but i already got a playset :p just in case someone wants to rebuild this deck it isn't a firstchoice pick but it offers flexibility so feel free to give it a try and/or share your opinion with me)

I wouldn't wait for rotation to pick up two more Steam Vents . They are probably the most played shock land in modern, I can't see them dropping at all, even when the standard players dump them.

As for Manamorphose I don't think it has a place in this deck, mostly because it is a "do nothing spell". Yeah, it replaces itself, but that is pretty much all it does. There are only a few cards in your list that have more than one colour in them, and for the most part they are all blue (which should never be a problem for you because your list is a lot more blue than red). Cantrips are good, but you want to play cantrips that do something as well. Gitaxian Probe gives you hand knowledge, Serum Visions lets you dig 3 cards deep, Thought Scour disrupts your opponent or buffs your pike, and Remand counters spells (also...you should really run more of these, they are incredible, a lot of times they are basically a Time Walk ). Manamorphose can be a fantastic card, its awesome in draft for making your deck smaller, and in storm for upping your count, but in an aggro/tempo deck like this you don't ever want a "do nothing". So basically, TL:DR...I do not believe that it is worth a slot in any capacity in a list like this.

ok thanks PlattBonnay !

i will delete Manamorphose from maybeboard now

i will try to get some more Remand and Steam Vents but i have just one slot (Dream Fracture ) for Remand left - what would you put out if i can get 4 copies of them?

and i will try to split the 2 Invisible Stalker into 1 and 1 Spellstutter Sprite because flash creatures are pretty great to drain mana from your openent in their turn - last game Venser, Shaper Savant did great with my openents Remand and cleared a path with the second resolve in my turn - a lot of moderndecks play strong one drops which can be counterd by the fearie or it is just a flashing flying 1/1 creature which seems quite good anyways --- and i have still the option of sideboarding them out or in again :) depending on my openent i would like to play Spellstutter Sprite against decks with Thundermaw Hellkite Geist of Saint Traft to chumpblock and strong onedrops like Deathrite Shaman Lightning Bolt Utopia Sprawl Birds of Paradise Viscera Seer and against Remand ofcourse!

the Invisible Stalker is a solid pick against Dismember Vapor Snag Go for the Throat Lightning Helix Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip and mid/lategame decks with blocking potential like Fog Bank

time to talk expensive stuff. Snapcaster Mage is very important to this deck, the ability to replay your instants and sorceries is huge. I would definitley replace Venser, Shaper Savant and Talrand, Sky Summoner for him. With that in mind I would recommend Quickling over Spellstutter Sprite becuase it's bigger and will let you bounce your Snapcaster Mage . it can also be used to pull your important creatures out of harms way.

I personally think Manamorphose is a decent addition, not only does it trigger your delver, but it also triggers your Young Pyromancer . a spell that fixes your mana, replaces itself and can even net you creatures is hardly a do nothing, and played from a snapcaster flashback it will actually net you card advantage. I'm not sure what I would pull for it

I'm not sure I agree with your 1 mainboard Spell Pierce , it's pretty good for the first 2 turns, but after that you would want the Remand s, one reason remand will be better that you may not have considered is this:

you play an important spell, Runechanter's Pike for instance and your opponent counters with a hard counter like Spellsnare. with Spell Pierce you could try countering their spell but they can probably pay it. but with Remand you can counter your OWN spell, let their spell fizzle , get runechanter back to your hand AND draw a card.

another alternatives to Spellstutter Sprite is Vendilion Clique which unfortunatley has a big pricetag but for good reason, it provides, knowledge, card advantage, and lets you protect your other spells. Even if you don't need to see your opponents hand you can target yourself and cycle a card for a new draw.

just some things to think about

hi TallGreg :)

i share your opinion of Manamorphose glad to hear that! Well i don't know what to cut for it too :'( suggestions please

this little trick with Remand you talked about - just wow !!! really great i like that so 3 more copies of Remand moved to place 1 on my wantslist :D (what shall i cut? one Dream Fracture and 2 Mana Leak sounds acceptable doesn't it? or better cut Spell Pierce ?)

i don't like Quickling over Spellstutter Sprite because it can't be played on an empty board which is risky with my creaturecount ... I saw Vapor Snag on a lot of delver decks this might be a better opportunity to bounce i guess :) i will add it to the deck soon

another card i want to add soon is Electrolyze but i am still thinking what to cut (my suggestions are Magma Jet Thought Scour Dismember and Pillar of Flame )

now let go for the expensive stuff :S

Snapcaster Mage and Vendilion Clique are great but very expensive ... some day i will get Snapcaster Mage --- but somehow i don't like Vendilion Clique over Venser, Shaper Savant ... i know he is more expensive and his power is less and he doesnt flies and he gives no information but i really really like his counterability / bounce (even lands!) with leaving a 2/2 on my board

Talrand, Sky Summoner Spellstutter Sprite and at least Invisible Stalker can be replaced if i get access to Snapcaster Mage (i won't use Vendilion Clique anyways) but it will take a while until i get some :/

and what do you think about Grim Lavamancer by the way? i don't want to play to much creatures and i don't know what to cut anyways ... but he seems worth

replacement suggestions are welcomed! and other thoughts and decktipps too :)

July 31, 2014 10 a.m.

TallGreg says... #7

Grim Lavamancer is nice but it will hurt your Runechanter's Pike becuase you'll be throwing away your instants and sorceries, it will also hurt your Snapcaster Mage becuase you will have less options to flash back

it's reasonable to not run vendillion clique, the pricetag is really scary

as for Electrolyze it's amazing of course, though we are getting into the territory of too many good spells and not enough things to cut. going to 1 or 2 of each won't help at all since it will just make the deck inconsistent. you could lose the Magma Jet for electrolyze, the extra mana won't really hurt and the draw will be very useful to you.

July 31, 2014 2:39 p.m.

zego says... #8

ok i will update the decklist once more ;)

Grim Lavamancer and Manamorphose won't get a place in the deck

i will cut a burnspell (i will try Magma Jet or Pillar of Flame ) to put in Electrolyze

i will update the landbase with 4 Steam Vents (yay i got the missing pair for less than 7 each)

i will put in one Vapor Snag for Mana Leak (3 copies left should be ok... i don't want to cut to much burnspells)

and last but not least the missing Serum Visions is going to replace one Thought Scour

--- if you would replace other cards please tell me your thoughts ;)

(Remand and Snapcaster Mage will find their way into the deck when i get access to them ... they are pretty expensive)

Just a few things on the usefulness of Spell Pierce , even just as a singleton, in a delver deck.

Delver decks typically run 18-20 lands and typically never want to have more than 4, maybe 5 lands, in play each game. If a delver deck somehow hits land drop 6 or 7, they've "flooded".

So, because of the very low land count, every spell you play has to be worth every resource you have to put into it. Let's look at some Delver Deck staples:Delver of Secrets - 3/2 flyer for 1 blue. Lightning Bolt - 3 damage for 1 red.Gitaxian Probe - Draw a card and know your opponents hand for 0 mana. Dismember - kill basically anything in the format (tron creatures not withstanding) for 1 colourless mana.

Now if we look at Spell Pierce, consider the spells it can counter in the format. Both Birthing Pod and Splinter Twin , as well as the discard spells in Jund, and any of the land search spells in Tron or Scapeshift. And it does all this for 1 blue mana. Early game it is just a hard counter, and late game it is a fantastic tempo play. If you make your opponent pay 6 mana for a birthing pod or splinter twin or 3 mana for a thoughtsieze, I can almost always guarantee that being hit with the Spell Pierce has messed up their calculations of what they can and can't do that turn.

ok thank you guys !always happy to get help

when i get the playset Remand i want to cut the right cards :) so i ask you what version you would prefer:

Version 1 :

-1 Dream Fracture -2 Mana Leak +3 Remand to get to

1Spell Pierce 1Spell Snare 4Remand 1Mana Leak 1Counterflux

Version 2 :

the same as V1 except 2Spell Pierce and none Mana Leak

Version 3 :

the same as V1 except 2 Spell Snare and none Mana Leak

Version 4 :

other balancing between counter/burn/draw spells? but i guess 8 counter +Venser, Shaper Savant are enough for the counterslot

playtested some more games :)

i want to put some more Vapor Snag into the sideboard or mainboard (results by playing against a casual reanimator with turn 2 Bearer of the Heavens )

a second Electrolyze doesn't do such a good job as i expected from this card - maybe just bad matchups - however it is an awesome card but i wont play 2 until i see better results with it ;)

i added one Shivan Reef - it isn't such a great card combined with Sulfur Falls on starthand - both got some pros and cons so i think a full playset of each is way too much and to get less disadvantage i decided to play 3-4 summed up

.......... Pros and Cons:

.......... the Shivan Reef deals damage to you, but it can produce both colours in turn 1 which is very good! but it hurts ourselves untill we only need the colourless mana of it ... additionally it isn't a landtype Island or Mountain which is bad if you want to play Sulfur Falls turn 2 for example

.......... the Sulfur Falls doesn't hurt at all, but it is like Izzet Guildgate on turn 1 which is pretty bad, but if we manage to play it on a board which has already a landtype of Island or Mountain it is like a shockland with 0 dmg!

.......... to sum up we always want access to another land to play it before Sulfur Falls or some lands after Shivan Reef to stop the dmg on ourselves ... that is why you shouldnt go crazy and play 8 of these (and we still got 2 scry lands and propably one manland or destructionland if you got some :) )

.......... a little annotation to Steam Vents it is a great card but if you are low on life and the game took a while (and you still don't won? you play aggro...however) a Shivan Reef could be somewhat better to save some life and still produce colourless mana whereass Steam Vents is tapped if you don't pay --- i won't complain about the awesomeness of fetchlands now ... this is FNM modern and not protour ;)

i still need 3 Remand and 4 Snapcaster Mage :D

the updated list with Vapor Snag and Shivan Reef will be added soon

this deck feels quite competetive now :) but with the next upcoming set khans of tarkir we can still hope for more awesome additions ;) and thanks to all subscribers and playtester until now !

Please realize that the more creatures you have, the less effective delver is. since all of the "set up delver" cards are banned, recommend scrying/ filtering abilities.Sleight of Hand more Magma Jet and maybe even a couple more scry lands. Please have the "less is more" mentality. Run 4 of something instead 1 of everything. for example I would run 4 [mana leak] than 3 Mana Leak and 1 Spell Pierce . good luck

August 13, 2014 2:16 p.m.

zego says... #13

hi Em0B0b thanks for sharing your opinion!

you are absolutely right that Delver of Secrets  Flip gets ineffective with to much creatures/artifacts ! i guess i cut Spellstutter Sprite and Talrand, Sky Summoner and maybe reduce Runechanter's Pike to one

but your second arguement doesn't fit so good to this kind of deck... i know that running 4 copies of the best card you can mention is always the best way in competetive tournament oriantated decks (which this is anyways), but this deck has a lot of choices of good cards and the best thing in this deck is it ability to be flexible and filter the cards you need - of course you have to pick playsets of the best filter cards for this, but the other slots can be filled with thousands of situational best cards (here is more more)

nevertheless i can't take a card that is worse than another - so if you can point out why a card is better or worse than another i will change them!!! So far the flexibility of splitting 3 Mana Leak and 1Spell Pierce seems to be way better than run a playset with less flexibility ;)

but you are right that i should pay attention to my filtercards ... therefore i will bring in more Magma Jet (even they are 2 cmc it could be true that they will stabilyze the deck much better than other burn spells)

good points!

I like where you are going with your deck for sure, the one thing I would mention though is that you have a lot of 1x copies of cards in here, if you like a specific card (like Remand for example) don't be afraid to cut copies of cards you like less in order to fit 3 or 4 of them in the deck! Right now the only thing that is a real issue is that there is no guarantee that you have a card in your hand by the time that you need it. For example, in a tokens deck people have four Bitterblossom 's in them all the time because they always want to be able to play it. So if you always want to be able to cast a spell then make sure you have four of them in there! hope that helps!

August 14, 2014 1:29 p.m.

zego says... #15

hi teamawesome1

you are absolutely right that playing 4 copies of a great card that i need EVERYTIME is the right way to go! but thats also why i decided not to play 4 copies of Mana Leak and play Spell Snare and Spell Pierce to keep up the flexibility (i don't want a Mana Leak everytime)

well some cards should be stocked up - especially the Remand slot you mentioned ... i really want 3-4 of them but it is hard to get them $$$

maybe i should stock up Vapor Snag as well? this card is pretty usefull !

August 16, 2014 8:41 a.m.

IzzetGod says... #16

Just like teamawesome1 has stated; you'll need a lot less 1x of copies.

I don't think Thought Scour is what you want. It does help Runechanter's Pike but you're potentially throwing away cards you need by milling yourself. You also need more than 1x copies of Spell Pierce and Spell Snare (maybe 2 of each). Counterflux should be in the Sideboard since it doesn't really help except against Control decks. Dream Fracture you should be able to do without. If you have enough card draw (Serum Visions , Gitaxian Probe , Remand , Electrolyze ), you shouldn't have too let your opponent draw any cards.

Some changes you can make to help for a quicker win that I can think are:

-1 Thought Scour , -1 Counterflux , -1 Dream Fracture , -1 Vapor Snag , -1 Spell Snare , -1 Young Pyromancer

+1 Spell Pierce , +1 Electrolyze , +1 Remand , +1 Invisible Stalker , +1 Magma Jet , +1 Mana Leak

Sideboard:

-1 Spellstutter Sprite , -1 Talrand, Sky Summoner . -1 Vandalblast , -1 Gutshot, -2 Pillar of Flame , -1 Tormod's Crypt

+2 Spell Snare , +1 Counterflux , +2 Shatterstorm , +2 Vapor Snag

August 16, 2014 9:12 a.m.

zego says... #17

WOW IzzetGod really nice comment and stuff to think about !

the reason i played Thought Scour was that you can mill cards you don't need after you used Serum Visions to scry for example and fill up the grave for Runechanter's Pike ... well the strategy seemed great to me but it is slower than expected, so you are right that i need some cuts to get more speed - i will replace it soon :)

what do you think about Magma Jet and Electrolyze compared to each other? i really like Magma Jet to be played t2 after a firstturn Delver of Secrets  Flip to get a potentially flip t3 - but Electrolyze splitted dmg and carddraw are awesome too... so i don't know which one to play

i think i stay with Vandalblast instead of Shatterstorm because it helps against affinity but also against pod , Pillar of Flame got to stay in my sideboard against Kitchen Finks for example , Vapor Snag got its place too (not sure main- or sideboard) for example against fatties in tron or reanimator or to safe my own creatures

Spellstutter Sprite +Talrand, Sky Summoner Gut Shot will be removed

i think two Invisible Stalker are enough because they aren't such a big threat without Runechanter's Pike and Young Pyromancer does a better job often (even if he forces our openent to use a removal spell it is still ok)

Counterflux to sideboard seems ok for its manacost

--- ok the update will take a while :) would be cool to hear your opinion! especially towards Magma Jet compared to Electrolyze

August 17, 2014 7:52 a.m.

IzzetGod says... #18

Both of them are really god cards to play. I'd personally play both, except no more than 3 Electrolyze and play at lest 3 Magma Jet (# of copies of each may depend on your avg. CMC).

August 17, 2014 8:59 a.m.

zego says... #19

maybe i will try some other cards too... here they are :

Sword of War and Peace (fire and ice is more expensive and its protection is worse, shadow and light effect is worse and more expensive so i dont like to pay for these, feast and femanie would be my second choice instead of war and peace, body and mind isn't that graet in a tempodeck)

Desolate Lighthouse (give it a try :p )

Faerie Conclave (WAY cheaper than mutavault - i think i play it sideboard against controldecks with massremoval)

and 3 Remand and 1 Snapcaster Mage will find their way into the deck - and maybe a second one if i can borrow one for the tournament (well i want to improve it before taking the deck to my first modern event ever ;) i plan to play it on the 29th this month)

share your opinions :)

hi there ;) i updated the decklist again !

added 4x Remand , some might say Mana Leak is a better hardcounter but Remand is a tempo-counter and fits better for aggro-decks ;)

added 1xSnapcaster Mage but awesome !

replaced one Runechanter's Pike with Sword of War and Peace (just 1-0 Thoughtscour still testing and less spells due Snapcaster Mage needed a little fix)- in my opinion one of the best swords (i know some might say Sword of Fire and Ice Sword of Feast and Famine and Sword of Light and Shadow are better, but i like Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of War and Peace at top over the rest and decided to this one)

what do you think of switching Spell Snare and Counterflux into the sideboard while stocking up Spell Pierce ? not sure about this ...

other little updates like adding Sowing Salt to sideboard aren't mentioned you can see the decklist anyway :D

and thanks for upvoting :p at 2 now - i try to add a modern tournament review (or just question me i never did this before) when i am able to play the deck on a modern tournament nearby on the 29th August :p Let's see where it can go with all your help guys!!!

Let's get into deepshit with my Modern Tournament Review Section

First matchup was a UWR delver (, who won the tournament by the way... :D )

It was a fight of boardcleaning ... the Invisible Stalker did a good job and noone wanted to waste to much mana to keep up counterspells. Early game we just casted turn1 Delver of Secrets  Flip if possible or just go for instaantspeed Lightning Bolt or Lightning Helix because noone wanted his creatures to be countered - however the bolt didn't force out a counter eachtime so it was somehow a show of burnspells ...

Later on we got to see the very cool double Remand combo of myself :) but a single Spell Snare destroyed the plan - there was another Remand of myself on my own Venser, Shaper Savant for even more funny interaction

well he got his combo together too :) i really struggeled when he answered my bolt on his Snapcaster Mage with an Restoration Angel and an extra spell ... anyway the Geist of Saint Traft decided the game twice (even my sword couldn't heal me up against this hexprove angelproducer...)

it comes to an end 0:2 ... D:

August 30, 2014 9:45 a.m.

zego says... #23

And here it goes the second matchup

i was facing a artifact affinity archtype - something pretty sweet and new to me:

he played Fieldmist Borderpost / Mistvein Borderpost and Mox Opal and striked with his aggroplan Master of Etherium + Etherium Sculptor or his more midgame plan with Ethersworn Canonist + Ethersworn Shieldmage + Master Transmuter + Sphinx of the Steel Wind

first gamei missed to drop a delver to keep up mana but this shouldnt be my tactic against affinity - maybe i was confused a little of the first game - i lost this whith 2 missing damage D:

after sideboarding my Phyrexian Revoker blocked his firstturn Fieldmist Borderpost and his Scourglass got shutdown by Damping Matrix so my pyromancer token and delver beeted him down :) 1:1

last game was badly i got 2 island and in turn 4 a tapped Temple of Epiphany with a hand full of burnspells and just one Invisible Stalker - pretty much lost this with 2:1 but it was a better matchup i feel like ;)

August 30, 2014 10:03 a.m.

zego says... #24

so here is the last matchup in this tournament:

a typicall GR-tron deck

first game he got his shit together so we got beaten down by Karn the Liberated (he used the +4 once at first to clear my hand) and just goes to exile my manabase and fight my little last creatures with his eldrazi :/ well we managed to bring him halflife but it was it no chance ...

second game was AWESOME we just played a turn2 YoungPyromancer a Runechanter's Pike +Magma Jet turn 3(e5) but the best thing was the turn 4 Sowing Salt - it feeled pretty mean to destroy a 500+ deck with an almost 50ct card :D

1:1

the last match that night ... and to make it quick i lost again 2;1 :/ it destroys our deck if he manage to exile our few manasources ... we don't need much but one of each coulour isn't stable against Karn the Liberated or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre

there we go with 0:2 , 1:2 and 1:2 and scored the sixth/last placebut i got some exctining cards in the 2 participant booster and i was lucky enough to get the fnm promo card Bile Blight :D

August 30, 2014 10:21 a.m.
