While I know this card may not seem that powerful, or just like a major win-more card, my friend has a sweet modern allies deck that makes insane use of Hardened Scales. While it has to come down on turn one to be especially effective, and I am not sure it's good enough for this primer, but just something to consider

Thanks ChickenPickles! I'm most likely going to make a GW aggro ally shell sometime soon, and am planning on using Hardened Scales

Very nice primer!! I have a casual allies deck that I intend to make competitive. This comes on very handy.
Just a couple of notes note:
- Vastwood Animist DOES say target land you control. You said that it doesn't.
- How do you feel about Return to the Ranks for dealing with the wipes?
I let you the link to my build: Bant Allies

Thanks for pointing that out simbioide, you're right I'll have to change that. Interesting fact though, they must have changed that between reveal and release. I got that interaction from an article here: http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/the-rumor-mill/new-card-discussion/232990-vastwood-animist-any-pinger
which does say "target land". I figured they wouldn't have changed it.
Return to Ranks can definitely be a powerful tool. I think it would be best used in a deck with lots of self mill/search effects (like Tracker's Instincts and Commune with the Gods because its definitely best with good board position. However, it isn't too hard to drop 5 mana and recover 3 allies, so it can definitely work after a board wipe as well. I'll add it to the primer.

Thank you! I put a lot of work into it, I'm glad people enjoy it :)

Great Primer, I love reading about all the different modern decks, and this was very well written and formatted. +1 from me

I made a fun little combo with Skybind, Harabaz Druid, Eidolon of Blossoms and a bunch of flash enchantments

I think you forgot about Join the Ranks under the white section.
Also, you could give a shoutout to changelings, like Mirror Entity, Changeling Berserker, and Chameleon Colossus.

That sounds really neat gunnyguy121, do you have a decklist? That'd be cool to show to people interested in GW.
Frayace I didn't include Join the Ranks because it is technically not an ally (Also because I'm not a huge fan of the spell). I was originally planning on including a "support creatures/spells" section for each color, where I would put changelings like the ones you mentioned, but it would be a huge compilation that would always be growing. However, if the Primer gets enough attention then I will include something like that.

That's definitely interesting, I'd love to see you try to refine it further to make it competitive. You have a good structure set up with the combo and flash enchantments, but you don't really use the blink effects to do anything. Also there's definitely a problem in that if you blink an enchanted creature, they'll lose their enchantment. If you can put some work into it though, I think it could be really cool.

Wow! This is really good, it looks like it took awhile. There is one ally you forgot though- Stonework Puma!!! You can use it in any ally deck (though it has now effect). It's probably not worth it to mention. I do think you should say something about Changelings though.

jrogers16 So glad you noticed! Haha I need to put a disclaimer at the top, but I decided while making the primer that Stonework Puma was going to be the page mascot. (I actually just bought a foil one to cheer on my deck during games) Reason I only put him as the featured card is because he's better replaced in any deck with any other ally. Still adorable though.
You're the second person to mention that, so I think I'll add the good changelings at least to each color section, or maybe in their own section. We'll see, that'll probably happen sometime tomorrow.

I use the blink effect to untap Harabaz Druid so I can tap him for more mana for more flash enchantments
February 16, 2015 10:07 a.m.
You need to give Harabaz Druid haste in some way for her to be able to tap on your opponent's turn, otherwise she'll still have summoning sickness until your next upkeep.

oh yea hadn't realized that, oh well. I made an infinite wolf deck using Turntimber Ranger and Xenograft http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/infintite-wolves/

Awesome. Give it some playtesting and let me know how it goes.

what do you think of Venser, the Sojourner in a blue/white ally deck?
February 17, 2015 11:45 p.m.
I personally dislike Venser in ally decks. I've tried him in mine, but my build is very aggro. The con with Venser is that the exiled permanent comes back at the end of the turn. It's nice for some combos, but bad for the +1/+1 counters mechanic must allies have.

Great primer! The formatting looks great and even though allies may not ever be top tier, they're extremely fun and this primer does a good job in explaining all the intricacies of this awesome tribal. Again, good job, you definitely get my +1!
