I don't really see any of the new Ally cards in Modern (or at least, the most popular version, Naya Aggro). Maybe Oath of Gideon in combination with Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, but both reduce the efficiency of your Collected Company. They all either require too much setup in terms of equipment or else, or are simply way too expensive.

Collected Company isn't necessary for allies in modern though. There is combo allies and the yet to be brewed, midrange allies.

the new white eldrazi might be worth putting in as a 1 or 2 of depending on the build. Its got value because of the flicker effect and most ally builds have colorless mana sources (ally encampment or cavern of souls)

Am I crazy for thinking I my want 4 Oath of Nissa in my Naya Allies deck that runs vials?

I don't really see the use of Nissas Oath in an aggro deck. Maybe if you played it somewhat heavy on Planeswalkers with Gideon and Domri Rade or some stuff, but I think I'd much rather just play another Ally in that slot. Didn't test it yet, so maybe get back with your results.
January 6, 2016 12:09 p.m.
I could see it used in a midrange ally deck, with planeswalkers. After this set, there will be a large potential for a new modern midrange deck.

Hey, for those of you guys who also play standard, I 've had success with this build allies in Standard. Does anyone else have a successful allies build? I haven't played mine in a tourney yet, so I will have to see. Oh, and does anyone have a good midrange ally deck in modern that they are rocking?
January 6, 2016 3:31 p.m.
Forgot to list the deck :-P Standard Allies, for real competitive.

Alright, the full spoiler is up. The cards I think are interesting for Modern are:
Warping Wail for the Sideboard, since we typically have both Cavern and Ally Encampment to produce Colorless mana.
Eldrazi Displacer for blink-strategies, but this one isn't an Ally and far too slow to be useful for an offensive deck, maybe in some value-midrange-build.
Allied Reinforcements and Oath of Gideon both provide 2 triggers each. Neither of them can be flipped with CoCo though, and so I think they won't see much play in optimized builds. Oath of Gideon might be decent if 3-4 Gideons + another PW get played, again in a midrangey build.
Relief Captain can work as a double trigger due to support. Still way too expensive for 4 mana.
Now there is this Equipment theme with Stone Haven Outfitter, Stoneforge Acolyte (1/2 for W), Weapons Trainer (RW), Captain's Claws and Stoneforge Masterwork. I don't know if it is worth it to pursue this gameplan in Modern, but my gut says it is too slow and dependent on not drawing too many equipments. The cards that most intrigue me here are Captain's Claws and Stonefoge Acolyte. The Acolyte could be played in addition to Expedition Envoy to increase our number of one-drops. The Claws are just barely too expensive to be a definitve include, but still they might be very decent for continued Ally-triggers.
Sidenote: I find it quite perverted to have an Ally who gets explicitly stronger when you play less Allies (Umara Entangler).
Drana's Chosen might be decent for attrition matchups. But I believe Cohort is an ability that will be contained to Limited and Standard for solving stalls.
With one-drops 9-12 in Stoneforge Acolyte, I believe one can consistently play Reckless Bushwhacker for surge on T3.
Bonds of Mortality is a decent card if you want to improve your Bogles matchup.
Natural State will replace most instances of Nature's Claim.
I believe that's it, none of the other new cards are worth mentioning imo due to being way too slow or overcosted. My guess would be to take the deck in an RW direction, splashing Green mostly for CoCo and maybe some Sideboard cards.
First rough draft:(21 Lands)
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Ally Encampment
13 other Lands (maybe add 1-2 Horizon Canopy?)
(31 Creatures)
4 Hada Freeblade
4 Expedition Envoy
4 Stoneforge Acolyte
4 Kazandu Blademaster
1 Kor Bladewhirl
4 Kabira Evangel
4 Akoum Battlesinger
4 Reckless Bushwhacker
2 Firemantle Mage
(8 Spells)
4 AEther Vial
4 Collected Company
MB should maybe include some Bolt/Paths, but this looks pretty decent already. There are various scenarios where a T3 Goldfish is possible, which is always nice. Maybe Collected Company could get cut to 2-3 copies due to Bushwhacker and 8 of the 1-drops not having triggers on their own.
But I think I'd start brewing with this list in mind.
What're your thoughts guys?
January 8, 2016 12:47 p.m.
Captain's Claws (link wont work)
Artifact - Equipment Equipped Creature gets +1/+0.
Whenever equipped creature attacks, put a 1/1 white Kor Ally creature token onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.
Equip 1
http://mythicspoiler.com/ogw/cards/captainsclaws.html
I think this one is quite interesting, as its a guaranteed ally trigger each round. Triggering Kabira Evangel and Akoum Battlesinger etc.
Reckless Bushwhacker Im not sure that to think about this one. I love what it does but the fact that it has to be cast for its surge cost to get the effect means that we cant AEther Vial it out, we cant even vial something out then play it, we have have to play something then cast it.
The other ally cards seem lackluster, even worse than BFZ frankly. I really hope i've overlooked something though.

What planeswalkers do you all think would work in junk allies the best besides Gideon, Ally of Zendikar?

I think Liliana of the Veil can definitely work in the right shell. Aside from her and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, the other ones become a bit of a stretch. Ajani, Mentor of Heroes would be okay, as would Garruk Wildspeaker, and either Sorin, Solemn Visitor or Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. If you wanted to have a light splash of red (easily doable in modern), then Ajani Vengeant, and Domri Rade I would think to be pretty decent fits.

Thanks for the response. Opinion on Nissa, Voice of Zendikar in an ally deck?

I forgot about her. I think she could also be useful. Her +1 put her out of bolt range and can protect herself the turn she hits play, which are always nice things and they are often the measuring sticks of whether or not a planeswalker is any good. Her -2 can also help beef up your allies including ones that don't get any bigger such as Kabira Evangel and Ondu Cleric.
Overall, her abilities are nice and she has a good cost. Her only problem is that she doesn't synergize with allies incredibly well. However, synergy isn't the only thing to consider when testing or theory crafting with a card. Efficiency is also important, and she she gets a gold star in that category.
If I did run her, it would likely only be as a 1-of. She isn't gideon -- who is both synergistic and efficient. I would say she is about as solid as Liliana, Heretical Healer Flip -- who would also be a decent consideration in an abzan build. She can generate a chump blocker to protect her when she flips, has a discard ability which can be built around, and can recur your cheap allies back to play for ally triggers. Getting her to flip would be the only difficult bit -- which wouldnt be terribly hard -- especially with an aether vial on 3 or CoCo to have her enter play during combat before damage is assigned to kill one of your creatures.
January 8, 2016 7:35 p.m.
I run allies without vial and I plan to keep Unity without it. I like Nissa, Voice of Zendikar because it creates chump blockers that can defend her or you while all of your big allies get in there. And don't forget that when she gives creatures counters the 0/1's get them too so they can actually get better late game. I run Hardened Scales and I must say that her -2 with scales seems pretty nasty. I also plan to test out Oath of Gideon because it provides two ally triggers for 3 and allows gideon to anthem on summon without dying. It also gets nissa in safer range right when she comes out. But with all this going on it seems like I would probably have to get rid of Collected Company or maybe reduce it to 2. Maybe go like 2 new nissa 2 oath of gideon and 2 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar with two Collected Company. Then run no removal with 4 Hardened Scales. 23 lands. that leaves 27 slots for creatures. Do you think an abzan list can get away with running no removal? I'd appreciate it if you took a look at my deck TheDuggernaught and think if what I talked about would possibly work in a shell like I have.

I think it would work... the only question is what to cut. Hardened Scales with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar is definitely a synergistic play. Although, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar does more or less the same thing with his 0 as 16/28 of your allies get counters when another ally enters play... and it isn't like the other 12 are going to get absolutely massive from a single Nissa -2 and scales in play. Certainly not as big as a Kazandu Blademaster or a Hada Freeblade. As such, I would play 2 Gideons before adding a Nissa. I also think that if you are looking to use Oath of Gideon that the more walker you use, the better... which is probably why you asked the question to begin with, ha.In which case, I do think Liliana, Heretical Healer Flip would fit the bill nicely as being both a planeswalker with relevant abilities and a creature that can be hit off of CoCo.
As far as what to cut, I would probably play with the number of Bojuka Brigands first. They are solid as 2 drops that can get big. But the inability to block can be a big downside at times, so it might be the weakest set of cards in your 60, atm. Lili could potentially replace March from the Tomb.
January 8, 2016 8:09 p.m.
Hmm can you explain why I should go Lili over nissa (besides that she can be hit off CoCo) I'm not sure that I see how good she is. I'm not saying you're wrong in saying she's good. I'm just not seeing it. Thanks!

hi guys I am very disapointed from the new allies. I think they are not playable in modern. Thats the reason why I created this standard deck Can you please check it and leave some comment? 11x mountain is just a placeholder for cards in description which likns does not work.
January 9, 2016 11:44 a.m.
I agree ehuez, I think Wizards completely gave allies the shaft in this set, favoring Eldrazi instead. The only ones that have any potential are Stonehaven Outfitter, Stoneforge acolyte and Captain's Claws, but they require a completely different deck to be built than anything we've used before. I'm still going to be trying an equipment deck involving those, but my hopes aren't high. I'll probably be switching to a different competitive deck.
With that in mind, I probably won't be updating this page for awhile.
January 9, 2016 11:57 a.m.
I think we all are, they didn't even print any ally with the Rally ability...
In my opinion the only ones that may see some little play in aggro builds is Reckless Bushwhacker
There may also be some crazy superfriends midrange ally decks, they should be fun but idk how competitive can they be.
And then there's the possibility of Stoneforge mystic unban, then an Allyblade deck might, and just might, be playable.
my 2 cents.

Captain's Claws and Sylvan Advocate are going to be nasty. I see possibilities for aggro to get nastier with the former and more midrange type strategies with the latter.

Yeah, allies definitely got the shaft. I feel like ever since Theros Block, the power level of blocks has been very low. Zendikar in general was a pretty big disappointment unless you play Tron. And even then, they didn't get huge upgrades.
January 9, 2016 2:34 p.m.
I mean, aggro allies is good enough to win... We've already seen that in numerous big events.
This new set really gives allies a different direction to go: ally lifegain and ally combo. Not to mention the more than likely crazy competitive all mid range. There is toooons of possibilities for brewing with allies still; we just have to accept that we aren't getting a new ally to put into the early game aggro deck. However, the deck is still super good.

I'm gonna be brewing up something special soon. I plan on using Gideon's pact and ally of zendikar. Also I plan to use the new nissa
