Four weeks of playing my revised deck (WurG Vial Allies) at our Thursday night modern, and it's gone 3-1 three times and 2-2 once. I was hoping to report back how 2 Captain's Claws did in place of my 2 Hardened Scales this week, but it never came up in my game-ones (or the few later ones it wasn't side-boarded out).

Some things I've learned:

You can recover from mulliganing, even down to 4 or 5. But don't pitch a hand just because you don't have a vial or freeblade for turn 1.

Fish players really do not like Ondu Cleric... especially two or three of them (thank you Jwari Shapeshifter). Infect players do not like how fast the deck is.

Remember to: make Kabira Evangel the card you board out against Affinity; don't play your Breeding Pool against fish (or hope they don't notice if you do); and don't sleep past playing your freaking Leyline of Sanctity on turn 0!

If you've boarded a lot of enchantments/instants in, don't count on your CoCo getting you two additions.

Ally Encampment's sacrifice-bounce ability is spectacular (although a bit gut-wrenching if you only have three other lands and are praying for CoCo).

Goryo's Vengeance really can beat you on Turn 1 (but not consistantly). I have no idea what to do against a Smallpox deck after they sideboard in even more hate.

This has more trouble than some other decks if they know you're coming. RTP's modern ladder is best-of-five 1-on-1 challenges, so you have a good guess what you'll be facing based on what they usually play. Four main-board Engineered Explosives is devastating for a mostly 2cmc deck (unlike Elves where they go from 0 to 3). At least with Torpor Orb you can destroy it and save yourself.

:-( Can ya'll leave a link?

It's nice that the deck was acknowledged for it's potential, it's pretty bad because it puts the deck on the radar in the competitive sense and on the market, meaning people might go after staples, for instance I'm looking to finish it and I am still missing a couple of harabaz druids. Hopefully I can get them before they dissapear.

I'm on mobile so it's too much of an effort to find and link. Look up the mana source on YouTube

I have my ally deck completed finally. I just need Cavern of Souls. But those are gonna take a while

JVMAV says... #11

Cavern of Souls and the Vial are both things I'll take a long time to get, as their price are spiking

Nef says... #12

I'm not getting vial. I actually like the deck more without vial

This is the list I own IRL except I use 4x Ally Encampment and 0 Cavern of Souls because I don't own any. I think this is the best I can get an ally deck. I may make a few tweaks here and there. One major thing is the split between Kabira Evangel and Firemantle Mage. Is affinity relevant enough to want a 3/2 Kabira Evangel/Firemantle Mage split or should Kabira Evangel stay at 4.

JLenzen says... #17

Kabira should stay at 4 in the main because of how useful it is against nearly every deck in the format, but firemantle needs to have a presence in the sideboard.

Nef says... #18

Yeah you're probably right. I have no room to sideboard Firemantle at the moment. 1 May be enough because I side artifact hate

February 2, 2016 1:54 p.m.

Updated my SB after some theory testing. I haven't had time to bring the deck out for a run as my cards are all over the place, in 2 different countries specifically...

Collected Alliance

Sideboard:

- 1x Boros Charm: Alternative Finisher; Great against decks with heavy wipes and if I need the extra push of damage

- 1x Chameleon Colossus: Great against B/x decks running black based removal and/or creatures

- 1x Crumble to Dust: I hate Tron cos I'm not playing it.

- 1x Gideon, Ally of Zendikar: On theory, it's good against attrition-based decks. He helps to sustain the mid-late games and also a bonus ally Trigger will never hurt.

- 2x Leyline of Sanctity: with all the combo and eldrazi decks that uses the magical word: "target player", This has to be in here...

- 2x Natural State: Destroy artifact/enchantments... enough said?

- 1x Ondu Cleric: Against burn, affinity and any other aggro mirrors.

- 2x Return to the Ranks: Great against attrition decks

- 2x Spellskite: Windmill slam this against infect and laugh. Same goes to burn

- 1x Suppression Field: 1-off mega hate against Modern.

- 1x Tuktuk Scrapper: Ulti-hate against artifacts, cos' I'm not playing them (kinda) :D

Have you considered Relic of Progenitus for graveyard hate? Not sure if matchups that use graveyard need to be sided against.

February 3, 2016 9:48 p.m.

So far I haven't encountered much grave strategies in the meta I last knew. I know a couple of reanimator decks, myself also play living end but the decks are rather scarce... I tend to see more aggressive and attrition decks like Jund, Tron, Burn, Affinity, Merfolk, etc..

But also depending on what grave strategies you mean. Relic of Progenitus and/or tormod's crypt work wonders. I agree. In that line of thought, Rest in Peace?

February 3, 2016 10:16 p.m.

Nef says... #22

I like relic because we can still play around it and use our Return to the Ranks but maybe RiP is just better.

February 3, 2016 10:35 p.m.

Are there match-ups that require hate on grave strategies and us using return to the ranks? I can't think of any on top of my head
