And I almost won both. Warstorm Surge won the proverbial "game ball" last night as it helped me dominate both games in a way that is truly terrifying for others.
Game 1- Normally I am the enemy. People get it into their heads pretty quickly that each card I drop is a potential game changer so I get a lot of hate. This game my goblin friend decided to try something SUPER adorable Skirk Fire Marshal equipped with a Basilisk Collar. Managed to skyrocket himself up to 190 life with it but also made himself the impromptu "archenemy." As long as I kept my hate focused on him no one seemed to mind that I was building up a sweet army.
The good
I got a Lightning Greaves in my draw hand which always puts a smile on my face. Kaalia was out and protected dropping fatties by turn 4 which is ideal but also drew some early hate, so mixed bag I guess.
The combination of Warstorm Surge + Vault of the Archangel + Luminous Angel + Sarkhan the Mad was pretty dang good. But when I utilized my Phyrexian Reclamation + Angel of Despair + Sarkhan the Mad + Strionic Resonator it really started pissing people off.
The bad
I swear every time I use Diabolic Revelation it backfires on me. It's a mass tutor and so it's great to fill my hand with huge creatures... but I always get caught up in making a "grand plan" with all those cards in my hand and miss the obvious dangers. Liiiiiike the fact that the goblin deck had been milled down to 0 cards, the fact that the only thing keeping him alive was his Necropotence, and the fact that he had a massive hand thanks to Reliquary Tower and a massive graveyard from all the milling. "What's the point" you say? Instead of playing my Bojuka Bog to exile his graveyard and dropping my Angel of Despair to take out his Necropotence I played my own Reliquary Tower "thinking ahead". Turns out he had a Living Death in his hand and took the rest of us out that turn. Woof.
The lesson- play the board and be aware of the dangers. Take the opportunity where you can instead of waiting for the next turn to make a difference.
Game 2- F me I hate control decks. With a passion. This was a 5 person game and 3/5 were control decks. Here I am spending ridiculous money on huge creatures (and I mean real world money and casting cost) just so these fools can steal them from me? Bullsh*t. VERY frustrating. I have an Act of Treason and enchantment destruction to "help", but to me control decks are bs and rely on other people constructing good decks for them to flourish. IMO.
The good- I got a Land Tax in my opening hand. Of course one of the control decks used a copy enchantment spell to get the benefit of my expensive card too... and to make matters worse he stole my Admonition Angel MULTIPLE times and used the landfall ability to max effect.
I had both Swiftfoot Boots and Quicksilver Amulet out for most of the game. This let me avoid some serious pitfalls like Royal Assassin and when my Angelic Arbiter was copied as she went into my graveyard. Over and over I heard "you can't attack you cast that creature" only to laugh and point at the amulet then bring the pain.
Then the game got interesting when I started to combo Warstorm Surge + various cards. I was using it with Utvara Hellkite to a pretty vicious effect, and would have been more vicious if I could have held onto Aurelia, the Warleader (grrrr...) but understandable that people would want to get rid of that pairing. Then I tried utilizing Avacyn, Angel of Hope but she kept getting stolen. Merieke Ri Berit, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, and Lazav, Dimir Mastermind all took turns passing her around much to my chagrin. Angel of Glory's Rise was a powerful help against the all zombie deck but felt a lil cheap since it was an ALL zombie deck.
Warstorm Surge was what won me the game though, especially comboing it with Gisela, Blade of Goldnight right at the end. Even though Lazav, Dimir Mastermind had my Avacyn, Angel of Hope I was able to drop a ton of 5/5 fliers whose ETB damage was doubled. It also made it pointless for him to attack me since his creatures were indestructible but they couldn't do enough damage to my creatures to kill them anyway. Sneaking creatures out with huge ETB effects is one of my favorite ways to win. =)
The bad-
Getting your creatures stolen all the time gets VERY annoying. I keep trying to figure out a way to counter control decks with this deck and coming up short. The only thing that saved me this game was a convenient Cyclonic Rift from my downtrodden zombie friend that let me get a bunch of cards back from others and into my hand.
The lesson-
Letting Kaalia sleep is an easy way to avoid early hate. This deck has enough big badness in it that there will always be targets, but they can't dismantle your entire offense simply by bouncing my commander. I didn't cast her in this game until 2 players were already out, and she had a much better time because I waited.
I am going to make this deck tribal Demons now I think. When everyone gets their rocks off by stealing my big creatures they are going to pay for it.
All in all great games and lots of exciting play. It did sort of feel like I was playing against myself most of the game since everyone was stealing my cards, but hey there's always next time.
