This deck was originally by couch312 on MTGVault who since deleted their decklist and account it seems. Original Link: https://www.mtgvault.com/couch312/decks/modern-budget-fog-in-the-maze/

The focus of this deck is to stall against more aggressive, creature-focused decks by hitting them with Fog each time they attempt to attack, gain a bit of life from cards like Plaza of Harmony, Saruli Gatekeepers, and Riot Control to take some hits when you're out of Fogs, and then finally ramp up to and win the game through Maze's End.

Win Conditions

  1. Maze's End: Fairly obvious. Simple tip- Once you have an untapped maze's end in play, you search for a gate with it, then play Maze's End for your land per turn. With this you can get a search each turn.
  2. Crackling Perimeter: I've surprisingly won a few games with this instead, great to use during an opponent's turn when you don't need to Fog. The damage starts to add up and you can close out games if your opponents aren't as aggressive or fall for your open mana bluffs.

Stalling

  • Fog Bread and Butter
  • Holy Day
  • Riot Control more expensive fog, nets you lfie to take some future hits depending how wide your opponents go. Note this card prevents all damage, so ability or spell damage can bve avoided as well. *Blunt the Assault I need to remove this for something better, it's just a worse Riot Control.

Land Ramp

  • Growth Spiral
  • Explore
  • Gaea's Blessing This one is great to bring back gates your opponents might have destroyed or milled. Especially nice against mill decks as this shuffles your graveyard back into your deck, basically making you extremely protected against pure mill strategies.

Other Cards of Note

  • Gates Ablaze Great boardwipe for how much damage you'll deal. Helps to stall your opponents gameplans.
  • Saruli Gatekeepers Gets you life on ETB and not much else. make's an okay blocker but honestly it's overcosted for it's effect on the game. Consider replacing with Gatecreeper Vine

Improvements to be Made

  • Add Amulet of Vigor, extremely syngergistic with this deck, but expensive.
  • Fix Mana base to better account for mana cost ratios.
  • Replace Saruli Gatekeeperps with better blockers or syngergistic cards like Gatecreeper Vine
  • Add in some card draw options to make the deck win faster, cards like Howling Mine or Rites of Flourishing
  • Look into other Fog options like Dawn Charm or Angelsong
  • Build an actual sideboard with artifact hate, graveyard hate, stax, or creature removal
