My first foray into the Modern format was with a deck that ran a combination of Thing in the Ice
, Pyromancer Ascension, and Isochron Scepter. I once attempted to build the deck a long time ago, but could never find a solid list that ran Isochron Scepter and was too new to MTG to put together my own.
Since then, I've become a bit more competent in Magic, albeit still rather new, and thought I'd give it a go.
With Thing in the Ice
popping into a U/R Pyromancer deck that took fourth recently at the Rivals of Ixalan Pro Tour, I used it as a bit of a shell, and pieced together other pieces I recalled from the original I played.
Through play testing, advice, and other venues, I have adjusted the deck a few times. Here are some changes I have made so far:
I dropped 2x Izzet Charm to mainboard 2x Boros Charm
4x Pyromancer Ascension has been removed from the deck for the time being. I may bring it back as it showed promise in my original plays. In its place, I've added in 4x Mana Leak.
As with Pyromancer Ascension, on the advice of another I have dropped 2x Isochron Scepter. I may still bring it back, but for now it has been replaced with 2x Bedlam Reveler.
1x Steam Vents was swapped out for another fetch-land, 1x Scalding Tarn
As my other primary decks are Lantern Control and U-Tron, I wanted something a bit more 'fair.'
