Please post an update on how you did for fnm. I lost 1 game due to bring mana screwed but was able to win all my other matches to get 3rd. It's a really strong deck

@notamardybum I posted it! I wasn't quite as lucky as you were, but I may try again next week.

aww dam thats a bummer dude. If you start to see more control in your meta, I'd recommend adding Erebos, God of the Dead in the SB to prevent life gain. My SB is almost entirely for control with a few Pharika's Cure for the aggressive decks

@notamardybum Now that you mention it, Erebos sounds like a great idea. I'll see if I can get my hands on one or 2 of them!

I like your deck! I just took a Rakdos Control to FNM and had one loss, this is my deck if you want to check it out Killing.Shit.Is.Fun. Haunted Plate Mail and Master of Cruelties won me most of my games.

For those Chandras, I would cut the whip and one Rakdos Keyrune . I honestly don't like having more than one because I don't like drawing more than one. However, it might be necessary for your mana base, I would experiment with only one before deciding. I honestly think Chandra, Pyromaster is one of the best cards for these colors. The extra draw is invaluable if the opponent has any permanents you can hit with it, and still pretty useful every other time. You also might want to consider Demolish for your sideboard. It can hit Mutavault , Underworld Connections , and the god weapons.

As for your question about my whips, the deck actually does run a bit better now. I do sometimes have to be wary about my life total with no way to gain life back, but it's generally not a problem. I just have to stop hurting myself and start working with what I have. Most of the time, an extra draw from my Underworld Connections is purely to have an extra draw. I just need to stop when it gets to be near suicidal.

Thank you for the +1 and the feedback on my deck, and I hope what I've said will help you out as well. In the meantime, I like this variant as well, +1 from me.

Great deck mate, +1. I'm running a similar Rakdos deck with more creatures, could you look it over and tell me what you think, Rakdos, The True King Of Ravnica

Have you thought about playtesting some Rakdos, Lord of Riots in here, possibly as a 1 or 2 of in place of Desecration demon? I personally prefer him due to the lack of a tap down ability for your opponents.

Lovely deck! +1

Here's my take:

  • I believe you have more than enough creature and planeswalker removal. You should test replacing two of the Dreadbore (moving them to the Sideboard), the two Mizzium Mortars (sideboard them against Blood Baron of Vizkopa , one Devour Flesh and one Read the Bones for burn spells. I would suggest three Lightning Strike and three Magma Jet . These can do the removal job in the early game, synergy very well with Chandra, Pyromaster and can win you the game when the opponent is low on life. This would be an experiment however, I suggested those removal spells to be taken out for them, but perhaps you might have others in mind.

  • I know you are experimenting with the Pack Rat , but another idea would be to remove them for two of the removal spells mentioned above, I would even say the Mizzium Mortars .

Good luck mate, hope my advice was useful! Check out my own stuff if you can :)

I think I've commented here before because I run a similar deck (and I'm also apparently subscribed) and one card I will experiment with when it comes out is Mogis, God of Slaughter . With the amount of removal, it basically puts the game on a clock. Especially against control and midrange, I think it would be effective. What are your thoughts?

TheFanatic says... #13

@thePESSIMIST I think mogis is probably something I'll try out once he is released. Adding him in would make it almost essential to run 4 Underworld Connections , something I was thinking about trying anyway. My main worry with Mogis is that since it presents the opponent with a choice, it may end up being suboptimal. I'm waiting to see what else in BNG would complement Mogis (or take his potential spot) before I make my decision.

Doom Blade is a pretty good card...

TheFanatic says... #18

@corythackston I agree that Doom Blade is pretty good, but in a metagame where monoblack is the number one deck, I don't think it's worth running.

mflaxer says... #19

swap Bile Blight and Devour Flesh and try to find room for a fourth bile blight will be one of the best removals in standard it kills almost anything you care about

February 6, 2014 8:31 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #20

@mflaxer Yeah, I'm definitely going to find a way to fit Bile Blight in there somewhere. The main problem is that Blood Baron of Vizkopa becomes a much bigger problem if I don't have Devour Flesh , and Blood Baron is pretty big in my meta. I'll probably go -1 Devour Flesh -1 Dreadbore +2 Bile Blight , but I'm just not sure yet.

I might an additional Rakdos's Return in the sideboard for midrange and control matchups, maybe in the place of a Rakdos Charm . I believe that's what Lukas Chaklovsky did with his top 8 PT THS deck, and it really worked for him.

@corythackston Interestingly enough, I was thinking about making that exact change anyway. I'll go ahead and do it and see how it works out for me. Thanks!

Great! I really like this Archetype btw, I just wish it had a more resilient threat like AEtherling .

I would like to see your sideboard plans against top tier decks like MBD, MUD, and U/W/x control as well as general archetypes like aggro, midrange, control and mirror.

Mogis, God of Slaughter? My friend ran that to a 4-0 win, and he was using Mogis to win most of the time. He is a god, and he has the option for removal.

Skraz1265 says... #25

Mogis, God of Slaughter really is a great card. 2 damage a turn is a slow win, but with all of your removal you can afford a slow win condition, especially one that's so hard to remove, not to mention you'll be killing most of their creatures, so they'll be hard pressed to sac a creature to him every turn. I would also mainboard 1x Chandra, Pyromaster for the card advantage. And if you don't need your top card, she gives you a good steady poke that goes well with Mogis, and stops one of their creatures from blocking your demon or dragon.

It's never been terribly popular, but I still think Master of Cruelties is a fantastic card. First strike + deathtouch means he kills any creature without first strike before they can deal any damage to him in combat, which makes him a fantastic blocker. Not to mention that he brings your opponent down to 1 life if they don't (or more likely can't, due to all the removal) block him. From there, Mogis, chandra, or any burn spell will finish the game.
