If possible, run Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress instead of (or alongside) MegrimMTG Card: Megrim. It's better nine times out of ten.

Bloodchief AscensionMTG Card: Bloodchief Ascension can get crazy in mill decks, especially if you have such an easy way to charge it, such as MegrimMTG Card: Megrim. Even a simple Tome ScourMTG Card: Tome Scour becomes gain-10, opponent loses 10.

I've always loved the use of Teferi's Puzzle BoxMTG Card: Teferi's Puzzle Box with Underworld DreamsMTG Card: Underworld Dreams-type effects; nice one! I have a similar deck that also supports Spiteful VisionsMTG Card: Spiteful Visions, you should consider it for this deck. (That deck also has red for the wonderful Phyrexian TyrannyMTG Card: Phyrexian Tyranny, but that would be a stretch.)

Other forced draw cards are good, especially in conjunction with discard. Things like Cephalid BrokerMTG Card: Cephalid Broker, Cephalid LooterMTG Card: Cephalid Looter and Lore BrokerMTG Card: Lore Broker, and also Wistful ThinkingMTG Card: Wistful Thinking.

And finally, the all-star of any discard deck in my opinion, RecoilMTG Card: Recoil. when they have no cards in hand, it's basically a better VindicateMTG Card: Vindicate.

I just realized that half the cards I mentioned aren't modern-legal. Oops! I get carried away sometimes. Anyhow, I forgot to mention Seizan, Perverter of TruthMTG Card: Seizan, Perverter of Truth, who is also worth considering.

Lol... thanks!

My original build was esper with tight focus on Mill with Glimpse The Unthinkable, Mind Funeral, Archive Trap, etc. It worked, but not fast enough. So I thought hey, card draw and discard go hand in hand. Then I remembered Psychosis Crawler and thought that'd be great as an added win-con... But with the card draw, I like Megrim for discard pain. Is Liliana s Caress cheaper CMC?

Bloodchief ascension would be nice, especially since it's a 1 drop.

What cards are legal in Modern? And do you think this build has a shot in Legacy?

February 24, 2012 10:32 p.m.

Yeah, Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress is better because it's 2CMC rather than 3, and because it's loss of life rather than damage.

Yeah, Bloodchief+Glimpse the UnthinkableMTG Card: Glimpse the Unthinkable=instant win.

Anything printed after Eight Edition is legal in modern. So, basically, anything with the "modern" card frame. This is not including things like the above mentioned RecoilMTG Card: Recoil, that only have modern frames because they were printed in a special box-set type thing.

Fog can prevent "damage " but not loss of life... yes!

Pretty sure if I dump a hand with Jace's Archivist, I can charge Bloodchief Ascension ...?

Pretty good deck :3 +1

Thanks! It's had alot of revision. I'm still pondering the relevance of Phyrexian CrusaderMTG Card: Phyrexian Crusader, but he's a great deterant and an alt win con, especially with a Sword.

March 31, 2012 2:30 a.m.

Sword of Body and MindMTG Card: Sword of Body and Mind. +2/+2, pro green and blue, making him pro in four colors, and they mill ten cards and you geta 2/2 wolf when you deal combat damage to a player

March 31, 2012 3 a.m.

Yessir. I have one. I'd like a few more as one of the 'cheaper' swords. They go for $12-14. I can also equip one to my Augury OwlMTG Card: Augury Owl if it survives.

This deck works, quite well, however I wish it was ONE turn faster...

my take on u/b mill U/B Elm Street I use opposition with mass zombies to lock the game down faster. not standard legal though. Bitter OrdealMTG Card: Bitter Ordeal is redonk as well

March 31, 2012 11:54 a.m.

Bitter OrdealMTG Card: Bitter Ordeal is good, but too slow here. I use Surgical ExtractionMTG Card: Surgical Extraction.

Mill is just an alternative win con. Real magic happens with Jace's ArchivistMTG Card: Jace's Archivist, Underworld DreamsMTG Card: Underworld Dreams, Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress, and Psychosis CrawlerMTG Card: Psychosis Crawler.

My issue is that I need ONE more turn for this to work. Tested it against another one of my Modern powerhouses, which consistently wins turn 5, Ach Hans, Beastmaster Run!.

I'm considering Archive TrapMTG Card: Archive Trap or Mind FuneralMTG Card: Mind Funeral. Also, I could use the B/U dual land that counts as an Island and Swamp from the Ravnica block. Budget doesn't allow yet...

Thoughts?????

March 31, 2012 2:45 p.m.

Well, if you are gonna run Archive TrapMTG Card: Archive Traps, I suggest throwing in a Ghost QuarterMTG Card: Ghost Quarter or two, to make a turn one 13 mill :P

If you're running both Underworld DreamsMTG Card: Underworld Dreams and Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress, I suggest a couple Blue Sun's ZenithMTG Card: Blue Sun's Zeniths.

"Okay at the end of your turn gonna tap X land to draw X cards and make you lose X life. My turn now." or "You have 5 cards in your hand? At end of your turn, force you to draw X cards (make sure X will increase their hand to over 7 cards) and make you discard cards."

March 31, 2012 2:50 p.m.

Yep, traded out a land for Ghost QuarterMTG Card: Ghost Quarter. SICK combo lol.

How about Sign in BloodMTG Card: Sign in Blood? It's cheaper than BSZ, granted not an instant, but UUUX is steep for this deck...

Excellent point, though, I like the force draw idea...ROCK!

March 31, 2012 4:22 p.m.

There is also an enchantment that says whenever an opponent plays a spell that player draws seven cards. Underworld DreamsMTG Card: Underworld Dreams + Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress + that card = DEVASTAION!

Polluted DeltaMTG Card: Polluted Delta along with Watery GraveMTG Card: Watery Grave is nice with the Hedron crabs also thought about using Ghost TownMTG Card: Ghost Town but you should be getting mana consistantly enough that you don't need to return it

March 31, 2012 4:48 p.m.

Forced FruitionMTG Card: Forced Fruition, I think. CMC is 5 or 6, but it's worth the look...

Yep, psychatog007, I need those lol. Bit out of my budget currently...

Part of the problem I think you're having is that you're dividing your deck space amongst too many win-cons. If you're focusing on Underworld DreamsMTG Card: Underworld Dreams and Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress, then do that and don't worry about mill.

Drop Archive TrapMTG Card: Archive Trap, Jace, Memory AdeptMTG Card: Jace, Memory Adept, Phyrexian CrusaderMTG Card: Phyrexian Crusader, Sword of Body and MindMTG Card: Sword of Body and Mind, Sword of Light and ShadowMTG Card: Sword of Light and Shadow, Glimpse the UnthinkableMTG Card: Glimpse the Unthinkable, and Mind FuneralMTG Card: Mind Funeral.

Then, use the deck space you freed up for some utility. PonderMTG Card: Ponder, PreordainMTG Card: Preordain, and BrainstormMTG Card: Brainstorm are good dig spells that allow you to rearrange your topdeck according to what you need most when you cast them.

Consider how effective each draw/discard engine is. For example, Howling MineMTG Card: Howling Mine might just give your opponent fuel, especially because Underworld DreamsMTG Card: Underworld Dreams (the card that works with it) costs triple-black and might not be in play when you cast/control Howling Mine.

Adding some control would be a good idea. PerplexMTG Card: Perplex seems like a particularly powerful card in this deck since it serves as a counterspell, damage spell (with Liliana's CaressMTG Card: Liliana's Caress in play, and tutor (transmute ability) all in one.

I'd agree with Epochalyptik. I'd forget about mill and stick with discard.

Also consider Quest for the Nihil StoneMTG Card: Quest for the Nihil Stone. Can be incredibly annoying and is pretty lethal.

April 15, 2012 8:05 p.m.

Other than PerplexMTG Card: Perplex and Quest for the Nihil StoneMTG Card: Quest for the Nihil Stone, what else can I use in the Modern format to have some utility/card draw/tutor?

I'm not sure if you're done with this beast or not, but Notion Thief deserves a moment of consideration.. I use him in one of my decks, The Pissed Off Librarian. Tell me of you've got any tips!
