Full Spike Combo Maelstrom Wanderer

Commander / EDH RUG (Temur)

Maybeboard

My maelstrom wanderer has a sleeve that says "Boom" on the back with an atomic bomb mushroom cloud image. I think that pretty much sums it up.

My two main win cons here are:

  1. Food Chain + Squee, the Immortal to generate mana and then cast Maelstrom Wanderer an infinite number of times creating infinite mana or creatures to then win the game.

  2. Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Splinter Twin with Boundig Krasis, Deciever Exarch, Breaching Hippocamp , Fatestitcher , Zealous Conscripts , Great Oak Guardian . Those give me a Birthing Pod target at three, four, five and six cmc as well as Eldritch Evolution targets. With haste and enough mana I can Pod from 2 CMC to an infinite combo.

Some alternative win cons are:

  • Very occasionally you can get a kill using Shaman of Forgotten Ways “Formidable” Ability which is usually as unexpected as it is hilarious

Here's how we get to those combos:

If you have the mana and the rest of the board is tapped out you can Selective Memory exiling everything other than two combo pieces and then cast Maelstrom Wanderer and let the double cascade put your combo on the board since that will be the only two valid targets.

Defense of the Heart almost generates an instant win if there are three or more creatures controlled by an opponent during your upkeep. This lets you instantly grab the Kiki Combo to go infinite. If the table is playing it safe and you have Beast Within available you can force someone to have a third creature by blowing up a land of theirs on the endstep before your turn. You can also use Forbidden Orchard to give someone spirits.

Ways to get key pieces:

-_To Fetch Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker you have: _ Time of Need , Goblin Matron , Imperial Recruiter , Eldritch Evolution , Birthing Pod , Worldly Tutor

-To Fetch Squee, the Immortal you have: Time of Need , Goblin Matron , Imperial Recruiter , Eldritch Evolution , Worldly Tutor , Selective Memory , Manipulate Fate

- Imperial Recruiter gets you: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , Squee, the Immortal , Treasonus Ogre

- Goblin Matron gets you: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Squee, the Immortal

-To Fetch Food Chain you have: Long-Term Plans , Drift of Phantasms ...Unfortunately this is the hardest combo to achieve because there is no way to tutor directly for enchantments in Temur colors.

- Natural Order Searches for a green creatures

- Bounding Krasis , Great Oak Guardian , Surrak Dragonclaw , Regal Behemoth

- Eldritch Evolution searches for the CMC of whatever you sac'd plus two.

- Birthing Pod tap it, sac a creature and fetch a creature with the CMC of what you sac'd plus one.

- Worldly Tutor puts any creature on top of your library. Great to use while the cascade trigger is on the stack.

Ways to Ramp

Treasonus Ogre is probably the best way to generate a large amount of mana out of nowhere and most games I’ll win leaving myself just a few life to spare.

Carpet of Flowers - gain mana equal to the number of islands a target opponent controls

Ramp Spells

Mana Dorks

Artifacts

Protection

Other Notes/Fun Facts/Ideas/Thoughts/Shenanigans

Noxious Revival is your only graveyard recursion. It can be cast while your cascade trigger is on the stack if a combo piece is on the graveyard.

Matches Played/Notes - 6/17 Turn 3 Win: T1. Forest, Magus of the Vineyard T2 Mountain, Sol Ring, Harrow T3 Red/Blue Dual Land, Splinter Twin, Zealous Conscripts infinite combo (still had mana from magus on the board)

  • 6/24 - - Turn 3 win: guy played mana flare (really?) I went infinite using harrow to get islands then playing palinchrome. Turn 4 Loss: used Shaman of the Forgotten Way's Ability...just for funzies. Died to a flier lol

11/23/18

Three matches with MW agaisnt competitive decklists (Meren, Purphuros, and Thrasios)

Won 1 out of 3 with a Kiki/Great Oak Guardian combo. An opponent tried to Path Kiki in response to him ETB and in response i actived him and started to make tokens (PS Always remove kiki in response to me activating him). He realized that wasn't going to work so he returned him to my hand and i didn't have the mana to recast. I ended up sacing Squee to Birthing Pod getting Treasonus Ogre and spent 15 life so I could recast Kiki ftw. Took me a second to think it through but we got there.

Notes: My deck is ramping fine but doesn't have enough to do once we get there.

2/24/19 - Played 5 games via Play edh on discord

Game 1 - set for a T3 win then had to teferis puzzlebox my hand away. Lost to a Jhoira infinite turns deck.

Game 2 - late in game, fought through multiple counters, won with food chain/squee combo

Game 3 - T3 win, food chain squee

Game 4 - T3 win, kept up mana for an Expansion//Explosion and copied a vampiric tutor putting Food Chain in hand. Combo’d off again.

Game 5 - Extremly long match. Got food chain on the board around T7, couldn’t search library, no infinite mana. Cast MW 3 times in turn, finally hit a palinchrome to untap lands then cyclonic rift overloaded then hit squee for infinite mana and chain casting play whole deck and boom.

Game 6 - lost to Sai, Master Thopterist. Misplayed on my final turn by not thinking small enough for my eldritch evolution target. I had Selvala in hand and needed 4 mana, 3 green 1 colorless and i only had 3 lands untapped. i brought fateaticher back to untap mana vault and then should have cast eldritch evolution on fatestitcher getting devoted druid to cast selvala and then still being able to activate it. I think that would have given me the mana i needed to win.

4/4 - 3 Matches G1 Won T4 - tutored for squee T2, played T3, Food chain T4 with pact of negation for protection = win G2 Won T4 - Played Defense of the Heart T3, T4 DOTH went off at upkeep, one of my opponents had a Swords to Plowshares in hand and i only had 4 mana so i got Teferi and Treasonus Ogre. That shut down the Swords then in my main phase i spent 30 life for 10 mana, cast eldritch evolution on the Ogre getting zealous Conscripts stealing my opponents Bloom Tender because i needed one more G to cast Time of Need tutoring for Kiki Jiki and then using my remaining mana to cast it and go infinite with conscripts/kiki G3 - Slow Hand, Lost T4 to Prime Speaker V. Infinite mana, drew 42 cards from sphinx and a wheel then cast Walking Ballista for the kill
